Jl very Serious Ioas it will to Maui and Hawaii to have tlte Kilaur.a witljlrawn from the Inter-irbnd routes. While the bti auicr malc her regular tri it wan plrusar.t to watrli her on her steady curee from i.-Liml to inland, diipenin with CoromrndaMe regularity her bud-U of newt, and taking up and landing jaAener at eta ted days and almost bourn. Maui and Hawaii will feel the l-j of t lie fteanier far more than Honolulu. Thi.- will end, if not permanently, at lcu.it for a generation or two, the cxjicriiDetit of it-Tarr-ip-land tcam coin-muni-ation, unless foreign capitalists htep in and fill the gap. The rcjort tliat a steamer has lieen or will be ordered from England an moou as the Kilauea is witfidrawn, rioNnly believes ; because if nach had been the intention in reality, such orders are rather late. IJut if we must depend aain on aailt, it is a satisfaction to know tliat tLcre are a number of good coasters touching at the different landing on Maui, sufficient for the carrying of freight to and fro ; but sailing vercls at bt are very uncertain in their departures and arrivals, and poft experience shows them no where more ho than in these waters, where the winds, as it were, play too frequently at hide and Beck and the inconvenience often ciicri cneed by passengers in the coasters is a well known fact. Tlte people of Laltaina, however. may congratulate themselves that at lcatt one vessel will continue to offer to passengers, and to Lidjr iistseDgers esjiceially, accommodations which, though limited, are fully equal to those of the steamer. I refer to the Schooner Kate Leo, which is an easy seagoing vessel, and passengers are less liable on her tlian on any other vessel on which I have voyaged to pay the usual tribute as . ia ucruaitueu ny irnieni-iiireaieninr eiinne. one is unsurjttsse! in man-of-wardikc cloaulincss. There is no spitting on deck permitted, no smok ing in the cabin, which is always as neat and trim as any ladies' boudoir on a steamship, aid the deebt are always so clean that any one may recline on them without fear of soiling spotless linen or muslins. The table, too, is rdways well supplied with the best the market affords," but is reality with a good deal better, as far as re gard the vegetable line, so unlike that remark able piece of salt junk, which my friend SSuiith tells of, tliat for four days was set Ik-fore him on one of our coasters at every meal, and which bore numerous hieroglyphic marks," one of which, as he afterwards learned, was the identical one inscribed nearly six months before, during a jass age on the same coaster by Mark Twain." The Captain is a living fountain" of real sailor-like kindness, and his endeavors for the comfort of his passengers are unceasing. A trip on this favorite euat-r, be it longer or r.lnrter, is always remem bered with pleasure. Of the Plantations the ruort liave ceased grinding, and the few that keep their mills running are turning out refinery ugar. shipments of sugar from Honolulu to San Francisco will for some months probably fall rather short of the usual amount, os freights from this L-Iund, at least, will come in slowly. What eBoct this filling off of fir?.t grade sugars will lave on prices, remains to be seen. It is hardly to be supiosed that the refineries will com mand a monopoly of the sugar market at 12 to 13 cents r jxund to the exclusion of our suie rior inland sugars. lut the extensive manufac ture of melado is so far fortunate, as it will sus tain the sugar interest till the time arrives when the completed Pacific liailroad will open new and extend ve markets inland for our lest sugars. The Departure of IIu Excellency C. C. Harris Minister of Fi nance. Commander of the Order of Kamclia Bieha I, Minister Extraordinary and 1'lcnijHjten tiary, Lawyer, Police Judge, Duke of Kahuku, -Assignee of " Stop there," 6ays my friend Smith, do let His Excellency swing around the circle." Don't interrupt me, I replied, for I intended simply to say that the departure of His Excel lency and his safe arrival at San Francisco, at the laouient the cession of Kussian America and the proposed purchase of Ilritish Columbia are an iKiunocd, is highly opportune. Smith coincides that if his instructions are sufficient to allow him to negotiate a sale of these islands, he will not hesitate nor return until he has accomplished tlus second coup d'etat. His fondness for jjier money must decide the bargain payable in green tacJiSy and nothing would elate His Excellency more than to be able to- return with a million or two to circulate among the refractory Ilawaiians who refused to allow him to issue puper money. The residents of Maui await with much interest the official report of His Excellency's progress. Occasional. GEEMAN BOARDING HOUSE AND CoMUopoIitau Colfcc .Saloon, Xl'LAM' STRKET. rr BOARD PER WEEK. HoooUI, Feb. 13, 1847. M tm The Social Kvil of llavrnii. Mo. Editor: It wai gratifyiug to read, in your iie of April 27th, a little wholesome exposure of the inexcusable ignorance or contemptiMe trickery of the Ooremment orpin's Star correinilent in re gpJ to the alarmiug increase of intoxicatiuii amongst the native jpulation within the laut few years. One's bIoxl bils with indignation tliat, in the place of pliin facts, to be read and knowu of all through out the group, men should be found claiming re spectability and truthfulness whilst yet endeavoring to cheat the public in regard to one of the two greit crying as well as consuming evils of the day, for the enormous increase in each of which, during p;ist year?, this Government is to be held responsible be fore God and man. And if any honest person desires to )e ma le ac quainted with the fearful facts, both as to the in crease of intoxication, as well as prostitution in par ticular, or of licentious living in general, and be finds this difficult in Honolulu, let him make a tour of the Islands and consult any intelligent persons who are acquainted with Hawaiian social life. On all bides he will find the distillation of Okohhao or the fermenting of stccharine fruits, nnd the giving up of dajs and nights to debauchery and its concomi tants. I state it as a fact patent to all that, in a large portion of these cases, officers appointed by the Gov ernment are the publicly known, leaden in thU do-. moralizing business, whilst others, both red and white, wiuk at and fill in with the illegal practices. And indeed it is perfectly well known that, wherever public officei are even tolerably honest in the exer cise of their duties, these tilings cannot be repeated openly, month after month, among the Ilawaiians. Kut those who direct the affairs of the Government have, time and again, had these particulars pLaced before them; and yet these same men, who are a dis grace to their kind as well as their own Government, are persistently retained in office, and, so far as can be seen or heard, will still be retained. And is not the inference, therefore, a fair one, I demand, that these officers correctly represent the sentiment and policy of His Majesty's Government regarding the making and use of intoxicating drinks ? A recent notice or two in your late issues would seem to indicate that His Excellency the Minister of the Interior is resolutely setting himself to the task of reformation in your city. If he will do something of the kind for the other parts of the Islamls he will as suredly bring upon himself the blessing of multitudes and prolong many lives, valuable (if for no other reason) for labor, which is now so greatly in demand. Hut, allow me to express my conviction a con viction which has a place in the mimls of a large part of sober-minded men that so long as universal concubinage is encouraged by that most "disgraceful of public abominations, the "Act to mitigate," &c, which is in effect "An Act to encourage,'" &c, it is perfectly futile to seek the suppression of its twin sister, drunkenness. It is useless to cover up, or whitewash for party en-Is, the facts which every nook and corner of the metropolis reveals to those who have eyes to see. Iu the judgment of sensible men, who have opportunity, too, to become acquaint ed with the morals of the place, to say that one half i . guised or purely undisguised licentiousness, is below the truth. And the process of demoralizatiou is so rapiilly going on that those who still regard virtuous life as the lietter way, are in danger of tieing engulfed iu this maelstrom of public corruption. And this, too, le it remembered, is a process carried on directly umler the eye of the Government, sanctioned, too, by a publicly licensed prostitution. Talk of Sxlom! .jiuiiit CoiiMiiittees anl exjx-liJ ' the public faiiJs ia searching out tbe rery mysteri ous, cioses of the national lec:iy! a tlecay which is to put rulers an-I ruleI of the H.iwaiian people fpeetllly lene-tth the snl. Tlie Mocl which circu Lites ia the heart is that which ia sent to the extrem ities. It cau-e no surprise, therefore, in any con siderate ntin.I, that the licensed prostitution of the metropolis rejeats itself, indefinitely, in a quii&i- licen'-e'l prostitution all over the L-htnds. It may le a trifl'ui matter in the estimation of : some, that one can stainl in a country district inn I i within a ra lius of a mile jioint to fifteen or twenty j couples living un lLgu:seily in licentious coiicuhin- j apej ami one of the couples entertainel l..y a high Iheer of Government. But what is the damning ' fact doing for the nation and for the Government j uiuLt whixe ausplou such things are the everyday I spectacles to e r;.t2e.l ujon ? I It is mocn-rj t- tell us to go to the law for redress of these giant evils. The poison which is thus eating ! out the i itals of all decent society, keeps at its work j of death unchecked, for no constable will touch these ! cases, n i will uny justice in country districts have ! anything to do wirii them. " It is so," they say, " in Honolulu, and what is allowed there cannot be j helped here." Ihe logic IS unquesUonaWy SoUIKl, i but it pniaeks horribly of a speedy and dishonored o-rave lor the race. Doubtlcs this is a very indelicate suhject, and j doubtless, too, many think it useless to ntoot this particular question of public moraLi as things are, j the nation having nearly run its course and being 8ure in a few more years to be, as to its feeble rem- j iiant, under the foot of the haole. But I recollect of j hearing, not long since, of a sailor who was greatly j nrrlauded for h:ivinr saved the lower extreuuties of j luTni:it from tbe livincr tomb which the other portion of the body found, in the belly of a shark, j The survivor attempted an act of humanity, and it was no mult or nw mai nis aiiempi wa hoi iuujf successful. He did what he could. The application of the ptory I need not make. M. LTEKXATIOXAL HOTsHL.!
