In place ot our coninouwons oeing in tne ngnt of a donation, as was anticipated, we have to ac- prices, burlesque the negro, bring down the house with obscene and stale jests night after night, spend their receipts in bad rum, demoralizing all they may come in contact with, and be well patronized for j i whilst such concerts as have been given in Kawaiahao and Kaumakapili Churches are to be like " Angels visits, few aud fur between." It ia not very complimentary either to the taste or good i sense of our community that such things should be. Now let us change all this. The objects for which the concerts were given are highly laudable : there is hardly one of your readers that would not, if ap raled to, cheerfully give his dollar to further them. Then why not, if we can combine a good action with highly innocent enjoyment, enjoy it oftener? Let the several choirs alternate a concert every two or three months, and the several proceeds, if appro priated to the minister's salary, will be a charity to many worthy members of the church, who are poor in this world's goods, by lessening their quota for his support ; or if to the decoration of the church, the object is a highly worthy one, for the house where we worship should in all respects be worthy of Him w hom we worship. Yours, L. . The Honolulu Tempera nee legion. Mb. EoiToa : There is in Honolulu an organiza tion of l.'o0 members called the "Honolulu Temper- 1 ance Le-ion." This institution is m a flourishins condition, anil has done more good, and is now doing more than any other society, club, or organization in the city. This information is communicated for the benefit of the "Government press" the Gazette, and the head ot that institution ; and also the P. C. .1 hertiser. In making up a registry for the year 1S08, it seems the " Legion " was either unknown or ignored, as every other organization or society, high or low, what ever its object might be, was mentioned except that. Wa3 it to hide the light of the institution under a bushel, or was it to please the fistidious taste of some lirjuor seller? A Memmeb ofthe Legion. The Family Newspapkr. Dr. Franklin remarks that a man as often gets two dollars for the one he spends iu informing his mind, us he does for a dollar he lay nut in any other way. A man caN a pound of sugar atid it is gone, and the pleasure that he has enjoyed ended, but th Information he gfts from a newspaper is treasured uj to be enjoyed anew, and to be used w hen occa-di.n or inclination call for it. A newspaper is not the wisdom of one man or two men : it is the wisiiom of the ag. and of the past ages too. A family without a newspa per is always a year behind the times in general itifot iii aii.iii ; besides they never think much nor tl a 1 much to talk about. And then there are the little ones growing up without, any tusle for read ing. Who, then, would be w ithout a newspaper utid who would lead one regulaily without paving for it? In the fight at Monte Uottin.lo. the French loss to thirty killed and wounded, whilo the Papal troops had only twelve casualties. The (iarihal dians had sixty killed and wounded and 2.2W were taken prisoners. TAKE NOTICE. Tukr Xolice.
