tiuns the contagion tikes place ; it does not apcar to
be very active ; and probably (under ordinary cir
cumstances) it does not occur in the early stages of
the disease ; but in the ulcerative form, the danger is
great. By reference to the returns from Kalihi, it
will l seen that the male sex arc more liable to the
disease than the female, and experience shows that
the latter communicate tlie disease muoh more readily
than the former. It may be worth mention, that
there is a man ou Molokai iu the last stages of lepro-

I has had two husbands, who have both shown the dis-

doubt that the disease is inherited in some cases, but
it does not show itself until alter the sixth year after
birth.

treatment. This has been the experience of all coun

desirable that leprous patients should understand
this ; it is cruel to hold out hopes that can never be
realized Cures have been reported which seemed
real, but they have no doubt been cases of other dis
eases, difficult to discriminate from leprosy in the first !

XOTKS OF THIS W'CEK.
The Conckbt, on Thursday evening at lvauraaka
pili church was well attended, and the performances
were fully up to expectation. The choir consists of
thirty-two persons, fifteen females and seventeen
males, under the leadership of Mr. l'eter Kalaikini.
Miss Emma Smith h is had the general direction, care
I and responsibility of the couoert, and certainly de
serves credit for the taste displayed, and the order
and discipline maintained throughout. It is no easy
thmg to teach natives to sing English to perfection, to
come ou and leave the stage with the precision of
well-drilled soldiers, and to observe a degree of deco
rum while singing that elicits the unqualified admira
tion of all. The nature of the performances can be
lest gathered from the publication of the programme,
which consists of sixteen pieces, as follows :

All these piecc-s, except the piano duett, were per

Larboard ll 'atch were the most admired. The former
was very prettily executed. The piano duett, jer
found by lr. Hoiimann aud Miss Emma Smith, was
a master-piece, which it would be dillicult to surpass
in larger and older cities. Altogether the concert was
a success, and a treat to al! who attended it- The re

so well-nllel a house. Compared with the previous
concerts in the same place, which were liotli well at
