We will say that in order to istme our paper promptly the week must be equally divided. Thus, to prepare the Commercial for Wednesday's issue, we have Monday and Tuesday ; and for the issue.of Saturday, we have Thursday and Friday. In this way alone can the work of issuing a semi weekly of tbe present size of the Commercial be punctually performed, and no one who is not a printer or who has not had some experience in providing the printer with matter," knows the constant 6traiu imposed on hands and brains. l We repeat what we said in our last, we,eball continue to issue our journal semi-weekly, as at present, so long as the patronage of our adver tising friends ehitll warrant it." - - ' 1 1 ' 4 Christmas. '"Yiiat varied associations the return' of tliia universal hohdaj brings up. It ban it blessings for ail gifts, festivities, social reunions to some indeed only memories, but blessed ones, which leave their 'benediction. ' The children-! full of the traditions of their patron Saint, become or the time being devoted worshippers, 'with' larger faith than they will find it easy to equal in after yean ; and Santa Claus leads the saintly calendar, the realest benefactor of them all. May he livo forever; with iis rubicund litte face, bis great big heart.'&nd Lid 44 little round belly " underneath it. Some of "us regretfully . remember the glorious reunions of the Yule-log and the Holly, and the ones that made such memories lasting. We do Dot forget their faces, nor what they said, through the lapse of years. We feel again the hot relish of the Snap-Dragons and recall bow, , ' ' -The fame of forleits done, the girls all kissed Jienealh the sacred bush ,. ' . , , The merriment gradually lapsed into solemn still ness as stories, wierd and wild took up the re maining hours till bed-time. . Exiles from the ' Faderland " are reminded of the wonderful Christinaa-tree, with its fairy mys teries of fruit and bloom, and the jolly gathering around it, while all outside is cold and wintry, with the desolate trees shivering in tbe night wind, wrapped in their snow mantles, andjooking in at the windows as if envious of the warmth and 'the happy lot of the Christmas-tree, the centre of good cheer in-doors. . JUow dear to us tho memory of these past re unions ! alas, for those who have nothing left of them but memories ! 1 ' , . In this land of the Sun our Christmas festivities. partaking in some measure of .different customs of celebration, the world over, are of a rather cos mopolitan cast ; but still conducted with that zest and enthusiasm which gives to toe day we celebrate its proper important as earth greatest anniversary. Let us take to our l.Prtrts the b letting of the day, 44 Peace, Good WiJl to Men," an hanten its ftui iUization by carrying its spirit from the holiday u;to all the working days of our lives. The volunteers, who have been so long the bitterest enemies of , the rebels, and who have compelled the Captain-Generals to adopt bloody and cruel policies, now turn to the rebel government with a proposition to treat for peace on the basts of the independence of the island Tins is the" re port of the Havana correspondent of the. The Sixteenth Annual Report of the Executive Committee of the Sailors Home Society was presented at their meet ing on Thureday; last, the 22d inst., by the Rev. 8. C. Damon, Chairman of the Executive Committee. It recites tile history of the Society, in brief, and shows most ooncltisirejy that the continued existence of the Home, since it Was completed in 1856, under successive managements, down to tbe present, in tbe occupation of Mr. IL N. Crabbe, has been a success, and has accomplished a great deal of good by pro viding a quiet, neat and comfortable stopping place and boarding house for seamen and transient trav elers. It has aim latterly been occupied to a great extent by masters of ships and their families. Until the traveling community, visiting Honolulu, shall become so large as to authorize the building of a first-class hotel, the Home, it is claimed by the report, claims, to be sustained for tbe benefit of transiemt boarders and travelers, as well as for sea mea. , Tbe olio wing is the report of C.'IL Bishop, Esq., Treasurer of the Society : v ode. Crowded. We are again so crowded with adver tisements, that some interesting articles are una voidably omitted until next Wednesday's edition. The Case or Kaaoaop It is understood that the final decision in the above case, to which we alluded to in Wednesday morning's edition, will be delivered this moriiing by the Chief Justice. Her Majesty, Qckkn Emma, sailed for Kauai on a visit, on board the schooner Pauahi, on Wednesday last Her Majesty was accompanied to the vessel by numbers of her retainers and friends. She appeared to be in excellent health. Ultra Marine. Some one, looking at Whitney's Marine Bulletin Board the other day, and noticing that there were no arrivals or departures, but a number of local items, including even the notice of a marriage, remarked that instead of simply Marine," it ought to be entitled 44 Ultra Marino." ; Tiie SiiERirTALTT or Hawaii. We regret to hear that J. II. Coney, Esq , Sheriff of Hawaii, who has for a number of years past filled that office, has re signed, on account of continued ill-health. We fur ther hear that the position has been filled by the ap pointment of Mr. Luther Severance. Christmas Day. To-morrow, Sunday, is Christ mas Day, although the publio celebration docs not take place until Monday. To-night, as usual as on Christmas Eve, there will be a procewion and mid night mass in tbe Roman Catholic Church, and by services in the Reformed Catholid Cathedral, near Emma Square. The services in all the places of worship to-morrow will have special reference to tho incarnation of Him who though He was the Son of God, condescended to be, born in a manger. The Burial or. a Prisoner. A resident informs us'tbatafew mornings ago, he met a solitary man propelling a band-cart along Queen street, containing coffin, .The man (a foreigner) was evidently in prison clothes, and asked to bo directed to me place where they bury the dead." If the deceased had been a prisoner, it would seem to bo rather se verely carrying out the injunction of let the dead bury their dead." , JcnoB Humphrey's Company.-On the last trip but one of the Mo$e Taylor, the above named gentleman, who for several years was employed on a sugar plantation at Koolau, on this Island, returned from California, with a company of sixteen agri culturists, practical farmers, to .engage in the culture of cane on the plantation of Capt. James Makee at Ulupalakoa, Maul. Capt. Makee furnishes the land, eta, and the men cultivate the cane on shares. So far, "the experiment of the Introduction of white labor on Maui, appears to work well, unlike tho Lanai speculation. ' ' Wedding At the marriage of Mr. Joseph Pico to Miss Kate Jarrett, at the Catholic Church on Thurs day evening last, there was quite a large attendance of the friends and acquaintances of the families of the happy pair. Among those present, we noticed their Excellencies, C. C. Harris, Minister for Foreign Affairs ; Dr. Hutchison, Minister of tbe Interior, F. A. Schaefer, Esq., Cousul for the North German Con federation, Judge Austin and lady, and numerous others. . After tbe ceremony, the party adjourned to tbe residence of the bride's father, where a bouutifu4 spread was enjoyed by tbe numerous guests. . Malicious Injury. On Thursday evening last, while Mr. B. R. Davlseon, the Superintendent of the Insane Asylum, was attending the auction sale at Adams & Wildcr's, having left his horse and buggy tied to a hitching post outside, some wretch cut the breeching and harness, so that in starting to go, everything gave way. Fortunately tbe horse was a quiet one, and Mr. Davisson bad time to alight and secure him, otherwise the result would probably have been serious. A reward of 59 has been offered for tbe discovery and arrest of the offender. Bcffcm's Hall. This now popular place of amuse ment will be re-opened to-night, with t very attractive bill, the occasion being a complimentary benefit to Mr. Joseph Rayner, assisted by Mr. Hendricks, who makes his first appearance on our Hawaiian boards, coming, however, with good -credentials from the States. Of Mr. Rayner we need only say that which the theatre-going public already knows, he is a gentleman in society and an excellent delineator of the characters be undertakes on the stage. Give him a bumper, for he deserves it. The Hall, as we men tioned before, has been much improved recently, the addition being a stage and dressing room in the rear, so that the audience will now face to the east Instead the west, as formerly. The soenery, however, deserves particular notice. Through our reportorial privilege, we got a sight, In advance of the publio, of some of the scenes, and we must say that in all our experi ence in other countries, we have never seen anything in the line of stage scenery tetter executed. Mr. August Clavie. an old California Pioneer, is the ar. tist. Mr. L. Braham, who is a popular vocalist, takes a benefit at the Hall on Monday night. Mon- day being a holiday, we do not doubt but that be ' will have arousing bouse. His rendering of popular , balladi, together with the combination of talent which be offers, ought to secure it.
