we were to dine. ' Through the kindness of Dr.
Parker and 1 Mr; A Word, we - enjoyed jaany rare
pleasures in Washington, and among the rest,
was that of being presented to the President.
Dr. Parker lives near the White House, and is
extensively and favorably known, for his public
services in China. lie had arranged to bring us

can people. We arrived last evening, and louna
Mr. and. Mrs. Alvqrd at the station waiting to
take us to their home. Those of us who followed
the war through its darkest phases, will remember
how' Mr. Alvord followed the soldiers with food
for bodj and soul, and never darted them,
under anj circumstances. And those of us who
have watched the fate of the freed negroes; know
with what devotion he has sought their interests
up to the present moment.'. He is now President
of the " National Freeduien's Savings and Trust
Company." There are those who doubt whether
the negro is capable of progress, or of adequate
self-support. It may reassure such to know inai
the savings of the colored people who avail them

This morning being a very fine one, it was
thought best to make sure of a visit to the
Capitol. Our view of it from the railway station
lnir. fivpnini?. was not imposing. We 6aw it
through a vista of poor buildings, and over a
road of deep clay mud. It reminded us of that
"jewel" which Solomon speaks of. But this
morning we approached it through Pennsylvania
Avenue which made all t!.o difference in the
world, i We not only saw the dome,, which is
seen everywhere in the city, but the immense
pile of white marble on which it rests ; and the
beautiful trees, and ground which redeem the
whole from the rawness of the other view. Our
visit commenced with the pictures, and other
