We con few to j no little surprise in olserTing our contemporary's course at this juncture. At a time when the one enterprise cf the Country Ut-on which nearly .. ... ,. rr - r , every otner reeourev is ihwu ib euuering irom ut- trcssion. amone other causes mainly from the scarcity of labor, the government newFper, witliout a word of comment, explanation or dis- , . h i t approval, eivca to the world a loosely written article from an anonymous source, in which X picture, arawn irom imarmation alone, is eiven n of our labor system that is calculated to still further depress and discourage our plantation in terests. Government, wo are aware, is by statute held irresponsible for anything that may charac terize the couree of the Gazette, but the moral responsibility of providing the channel for the i utterance of unfounded and injurious statement 1 against a large and influential class of the com munity, caunot so easily be avoided. While neither editor or government are responsible for the opinions expressed by any correspondent, yet we donbt if the government can deny its re sponsibility in the conduct of its press, so far as to tee to it that the columns or its official organ are not used for the purpose of misrepresenting aud libeling a whole class in the community men who constitute the principal producers of the Kingdom. We seriously doubt if tbe writer to whom we reler has ever visited a single plantation of im portance, yet he plainly gives his readers here and abroad to understand, that he knows that our planters lodge their laborers in some horrible manner, that would not " para the inspection of , l i . 1 . it... .f 11 . I an enilgniCDeu, iiuiuudc mau , tiMtt prucuviuiy j no accommodations are afforded for the men in taking their meals ; that no proper care is taken of tbem when sick ; in short, that the laborers oa our plantations do not receive from the managers the ordinary treatment and care that is bestowed upon brutes. All this is qualified by the sugges tion that the existence of these abuses is not at all times the fault of the planter, but of his subor dinates. This qualification however, and per haps intentionally, adds the sin of criminal care lessness to the indictment against tbe planter, now presented through the official organ of the government at the precise moment when he is suffering loss from the scarcity of laborers, and , a . a a. C 1 we are carnefttly looking about for the source from which to supply his necessity for more. In the same issue containing the inconsiderate and unjust attack on the planters, is a contributed article of a somewhat different stripe, that paints a gloomy picture of the national decadence towards which the writer believes we are rapidly hastening. It would appear to be the cboocn ruiwion of the first of these philanthropic scrib blers to do all in h!s puny power to hasten tbe catastrophe, from which, however, the last gra ciously promises to point the road of deliverance.
