A pious New Jeraey dame lias Btopped graving
lor ner rnisoand, tecause as Fhe eave, " 1 have
prayed so long without effect that I think the
Lord hnH just as poor an opinion of that man as I
have."
The Springfield HepuJliran argues that many of
the ways ol the American women are vulgar, one
oi iu ioints being this ; " rso gentleman would
care to parade the streets in such attire that one
hand was constantly occupied tn rechng tlicelack
of Iuh hm-chen, after the manner of hoisting up
eKirici ac ifie present time.
Charles Ileade expressed liis exjntempt for lit
tle lawyers" alter the following blunt style:
The greatest asses Clod ever made arc little law-
yeis. our little lawyer is a man who has parted
with the good sense of the layman and who has
not advanced one inch toward the ecience of a
Mansfield or a Story."
A little boy of (our years, standing in the moon
light by his sister aged six, said to her: "Isn't
fiod a good man, Nelly, to give us such a beauti
ful moon?" Oh, Freddy," said the sister, in
earnest remonstrance, don't call God a man, for
if ever there was a gentleman, I'm sure God is
one!" Fact. Chrisian Union.
As an innocent-looking old man was going up
Washington street, Yicksburg, a drayman nod
ded to him and asked : " Want a dray, mister?"
N o, I guess not," replied the old man. I'm
too fur from home, and can't pay freight on it.
Much otlecged, though. Vickeburg is a power
ful nice town. A feller back there asked me if I
didn't want a coat, another inquired if 1 wanted
a back, and now you offer me a dray ! I wish I
lived here."
The other Sunday the usher of ono.of the Detroit
churches was greatly surprised at the appearance
of an old acquaintance, whose red nose and bleary
red eyes bad not been seen in cUurcb before for
fifteen years. Why, I'm awful glad to sec you,"
said the usher as he held out his hand. They
shook, and the usher continued : " So you thought
you'd come to church?" "Yes, I thought bo,"
replied the man as he looked around. "It's
mighty lonesome now since they've closed the
saloons on Sunday."
Old Winston was a negro preacher in Virginia,
and bis ideas of- theology and human nature were
often very original, A. gentleman thus accosted
the old gcntlenr" . y : " Winston, I un
derstand you U ew.y woman has Beven
devils. How can you prove it?" " Well, eah,
did you never read in the bible how seven debbles
were cast out'crMary Magalin?" "Oh, yea I've
read that." " Did you ebber hear of 'em bein
cast out of any oder woman, sab.?" " No, I never
did." " Well, den, all the odders got 'cm yet."
Another Natuan Murderer. A California
Sheriff, who had got tired of having conscience
stTicken Nathan murderers give themselves up
and desire free transportation to New York, there
to expiate their crimo on the gallows, addressed
the last candidate as follows : " So your conscience
ain't easy, ch?" "Ah," Tepli:d the murderer,
" I have the curse of Cain upon my brow;I wan
der, wander, and find no rest." "And you're the
man?" " I am." " And you want to be hanged?"
" I feel that 1 6hant rest easy till I'm hanged."
" Well, my friend" replied the Sheriff,' thought
Jully, " the county treasury ain't well fixed at
present, and I don't want to take any risk in case
you're not the man and are just fishing for a free
ride to New York. Uesides, those New York
courts can't be trusted to hang a man. On the
whole, as yon say you deserve to be killed, and
as it can't make much difference to you or society
how you are killed, so long as you are, I guess
I'll kill you myself." So 6aying, he drew his re
volver, br.t that conscience-stricken murderer had
departed in the direction of Alaska with Fuch
fervor that people couldn't see the brand of Cain
on his brow for the dust he kicked up.
Ode to AiTrvx. The grasshopper creaks in
the leary gloom, And the bumble bee bumbleth
the live-long d.iy. But where have they gone
with the bran new broom? And what has been
done to the buzz saw's play?
Ob, it's little he thinks of the cola mince pie,
And it's little he seeks of the raw ice cream ; tor,
the dying year with its tremulous sigh Shall
awaken the lingering loon from his dream.
Oh, list! For the cricket, now far and near,
Shrillfully singetb his roundelay, And the negli
gent noodle his noisy cheer, And where the doodle
bug eats the hay.
Oh, the buzz-saw so busily buzzes the stick,
And bumbling the bumbl bee bumbleth his tune;
While the cricket cricks crickingly down at the
creek, And the noodle calls noisily out, It is
noon !"
The dog fennel sighs, "She is here! 6he is
here !" And the smart-weed says dreamily, "Give
us a rest !'.The hop vine speaks tenderly, " Give
us a beer," And the jimson-wecd hollers, " Oh,
pull down your vest." Burlington Hawkeye.
TnE Old Tobacco Cuewer Fooled. One day
last month, when trade was dull, a Vicksburg
grocery clerk procured a piece of sole leather
from a shoemaker, painted it black, and laid it
aside for future use. Within a few days, an old
chap from back in the country came in and in
quired for a plug of chewing tobacco. The piece
of sole leather was tied up, paid for, and the pur
chaser started for home. At the end of the sixth
day he returned, looking downcast and dejected,
and walking into the store he inquired of the
clerk : " Member that terbacker I got here, the
other day?" "Y'es." "Well was that a new
brand?" "No same old brand." "Regular
plug terbacker, was it?" "Yes." " Well, then,
it's 'me; it's here in my jaws," sadly replied the
man. " I knowed I was gittin' purty old, but I
was alius handy on bitin' plug. I never 6ced a
plug before this one that I couldn't tear to pieces
at one chaw. 1 sot my teeth on to this one, and
bit and pulled anc-twisted like a dog at a root,
.and I've kept bi';!ng and pulling for six days,
and thar she am row, the same as the day you
soli her to me ! ' " Seems to be good plug," re
marked the c.-k as hesmelled of the counterfeit.
- 'ouc fight: it's me that's failing!" ex
claimed the old man. " Pass me out some fine
cut and I'll go home and deed the farm to the
boys, and get ready for the grave 1 " VUkslurg
