London, December 18 The detail of the lat
Chilean victory state that ao allied force of Peru viaon
and Bolivians. 11,000 strong, marching northward
from Noria to effect a junction with a reinforcement
of C.OuO under command of the President of Bolivia,
attacked on November 21st the Chilean advanced
corps; of 6,0O men. who occupied an intrenched
position at Dolores, n ar Agua Panta. The Chilean
heavy cannon decimated the ranks of the a! lie-,
whose cavalry charged three times upon the guns
an J attempted to carry them off. but were unsuccess
ful, fjm the evening the rear of the Chilean force
came up and decided the day. The allied forces
were driven back and their camp was taken, in
which thirteen cannon were found. Many wounded
officers, including Ibe Bolivian General Villegns,
were taken prisoners, and another of the allied
Generals was killed. The Chilean loss was heavy.

and Anthony. It was understood that their purpose
was to consult with General Grant with reference to
bis probable acceptance of the nomination for Presi
dent if tendered hint by Ibe Convention at Chicago
in June. It was the general expectation that the

definitely settled to-day. an J it is safe to say. from
the statements made by prominent Republicans, that
It has been settled affirmatively. The details of the
conference could net be learned to-night, but the
net result, on the best authority outside of General
Graat himself, is that the General has intimated hii
acceptance, provided the nomination is tendered to
him by a practically unanimous vote of the Conven
tion A prominent liepublieaa stated this evening

Grant would be a candidate again for the Presiden

candle," exclaims the skeptic. and bow then can it
withstand the fierce beat of an electric current ?"
Very true, but Edison makes the little piece of paper
more infusible than platinum, more durable than
granite, and tins involves no complicated process.
The paper ia merely baked in an oven until all its
elements have passed away except its car Don frame
work. The latter is then placed in a glass globe,
connected with wires leading to the clectric-produe
lag machine, and the air exhausted from Ibe globe.

produce no deleterious gases, no smoke, no cnen
jive odors ; a light without flame, without danger,
requiring no matches to ignite, giving out but little
beat, vitiating no air, and free from all flickering
light, that ia a little globe of sunshine ; and this
light, the inventor claims, can be produced cheaper
thaa that from the cheapest oil The inventor boas
that electricity can be regulated with entire reliabil
ity at the central station, just as the pressure of ga
ia now regulated. The entire coat of constructing

St. Petersburg as having been arrested in the vicin-
itr of the Winter Palace, was arrested last Saturday

ies, dyaamite cartridges, and a complete plan ot the
Winter Palace. Previous to bia arrest a printed
proclamation bad been issued, announcing that the
Winter Palace would be blown up on the next uay.

William 8. 8nita, First Lord of the Admiralty, dis
cussed the Zola war. and affirmed that the Govern
ment intended purely defensive measures, bat that
Sir Bartle Frera exceeded bis instructions. He
denied that the Government desired the annexation
of Zululand. and advocated moderation in general in
the South African policy.

don from American missionaries at Meeyab. Persia,

ish urdsun. who are starving There is already
a partial failure of the wheat and raisin crops.
Owing to poverty, only about one-tenth part of the
usual import of food bas been made, and importation
bas now entirely ceased. The Government is doing
little or nothing. The winter will intensify the die
ties. The need of relief is urgent.

Waddington'S residence to-day and signed their
resignation, which were transmitted to President
(Jravy. De Freyciuet has been intrusted with the
formation of another Cabinet.

ay : The polemic tone of the press become more
bitter daily, and the Government continues ft pros
ecutions against th newspaper. In the past ten
day the Government baa prosecuted seventeen jour
nals of every shade of opposition. Numerous arrests
of noted Federal have been made.
Dispatcher from MaJrid state that there have been
several riotous street demonstrations during the
past week. After the funeral of General Jagunero
a riot occurred between the mob and the police, in
which shot were fired. Seventeen person were
arrested.

Calcutta, Dec. 12. An intense excitement w
created here this afternoon by the attempted as-asi-natlon
of the Viceroy. Lord Lytton. Ilis Lordship
had just r turned to this city by railway from the
frontier, and was met and welcomed at the station by
a large gathering of his adherents. After the usual
greetings were over, the party entered their carriages
which were iu waiting and pr. ceed.-d on their way to
the viceregal palace. They had gone but a short uis
lance when a pistol shot was nreil by some person in
the crowd which lined the streets. The ball passed
immediately over the head of the Viceroy, who occu
pied the rear seat of his carriage.
Calcutta, Dec. 15 The Pioneer (newspaper) as
serts that an immense m9 of correspondence has
been found and laid before the Government, includ
ing instructions from the Russian Government to its
aeents in Central Aia. makioe out the course they
are to follow with the ex-Anieer, Fhere Ali. These
papers are sail to show that Russian intrigues
against Afghanistan were active as far buck as 1873
and a fiord conclusive proof of the falsity of the excuse
given for the Raman mission to Labul last year.
New Yobk. Dec. 10. A cable dispatch to the Star
from London says: Dispatches from Cabul report the
the situation at Cabul as serious in the extreme.
The Sepoys and bill men who menace the city are in
creasing in numbers rapidly, and it is estimated
that they now number not less than 12,000 to 15.000
fighting men, a large proportion of whom are fur
nished with arms cf nrecision an. I are well drillc! in
their use. In view of a general attack, which will
probably be made by rhe insurgents. Gen. Roberts
has drawn in bis lines aud collected the troops under
his command within the Shu par cto tonuient, and
also ordered reinforcements from the garrisons at
Gindatnuk and Jellaiaha J. the latter of whom are
now on their way up the Khyber Pass. -It is the
geaeral opinion in military circles here that an ef
fort must at once be made to clear the country of the
enemy and gain the possession, and this can only be
done by combined and decisive action. The V iceroy
bas ordered reinforcements of raw recruits to replace
those necessarily drawn from the lines for the de
fense of Cabul.

says : The news from Afghanistan indicates beyond
a doubt that a crisis bas been reached in our mili
tary operations in that country more important than
anv through which we have vet passed since the
commencement of the invasion laat year. Happily
the position we occupy and the resources at our di
poaal appear to render us better able to meet tins
emergency than any which have yet preceded it.

In view of the serious nature of the late intelligence
from Afghanistan the treops now under orders for
India will be dispatched earlier than was originally
intended. The grave nature cf the situation will

which were about to return after a long service.
Loxdo.x. Dec 17 The Viceroy of India telegrsphs
to-day that communications with General Roberts
are interrupted.
' Daoud Shah, formerly Commander-in-chief of the
Afghan army, has been professing toco-operate with
the British since the occupation of Cabul, and his
arrest would seem to indicate recent treachery or the
discovery of proofs of his perfidy in the affair of the
slaughter af the British Embassy in Cabul. on which
occasion be was sent by the Ameer to quell the re
volt and publicly received the thanks cf the British
officet s for his pretended efforts to assist Cavagnari
L.wiork. December 17. The (7rii and Military

a native chirf that the tribes were m-tinp. and
that thf inhabitant. ol Cabnl were disaffected and

Afghan troop and the bill tribes.

Gazette from St. Petersburg asserto that the reason
why the police have so little success in discovering
Nihilists is that evil i hidden where the police do
not venture to look. The conspirators are In be

hence the police, in the employ of the court within
whose very circle these people carry on their
games, is poweil. nainst the Nihilists.
A Berlin correspondent announces that General
Drentelin ha. tendered hU resignation as Chief of
the Imperial police. The Russian police have dis
covered another secret printing establishment in
St. Petersburg from which sedition prints were
beinir circulated by the Nihilists. A fruitless at
tempt has been made at Moscow on the life of
Prince Dolgorouki, Governor of Moscow, by an
explosion of petards.
London. December 13. Yakoob Khan's buried
treasure, recently recovered at Cabul. was all in
Russian gold. Some of the Afghan regulars were
dressed in Russian uniforms.
A Bombay correspondent says: Details of the
fighting at Cabul show that the people of the city
and surrounding villages vied wiih euch other in
murdering and mutilating the stragglers and
wounded men of the British army, some heinir ac
tually murdered within two hundred yard ol the
wall of Shirptir.

ral Roberts, dated the ISlh. urges Gen. (lough's
immediate advance, in light order, without tent.

London. December 21. A dispatch from Bom
bay, dated yesterday, say: Gen. Roberts report,
under date of the lStli instant, that he has learned
that Gen. Gough ha not yet advanced beyond
Jagdallak.
New York, Dec 22. A cable dispatch to the
Tribune says : The Afghan disasters excite general
alarm and Tory consternation. The (jaeen is re
ported to be greatly distressed and publicly blames
Lord Lytton for suppressing ana distorting intorma-

tion. There are many demonstrations oi puouc in
dication at official disingenuousness, and the press,

result is perilous for the Government. Private re
monstrances are numerous and emphatic The best
authorities on Indian affiirs say that Gen Roberts
was utterly icnorant of the enemy s preparations,
and was obliged finally to fight his way around Ca
bul to the Shirpur Cantonment, where he
is completely surroundel. The Behuraaro Hills
command the position from the west, and General
Roberts' position is extremely critical, but be may
hold out. provided the reported supplies exist. It is
doubtful if a supply of water is sure : fuel is abun
dant, but forage is scarce. The number of effective
troops is now reported at 6,vxi, wun an equai num
ber of camp-followers. It is expected that Oeneral
Roberts will be compelled within a month to fight bis
way through the enemy. There is no possibility of
reinforcements advancing before February, the
transport service being deficient. Tho German staff
derides the imbecility of the Indian Commisariat De
partment, and regards General Roberta' position as
most critical.
The Queen considers the mistakes so grave that it
is reported she is dispose.! to abandon the Ministry's
Afghan policy. The English papers, while admtttiog
the eeriousness of the situation since Gen. Roberts
communications were cut, assert ostentatiously that
there ia no cause for anxiety ; but profound anx
iety nevertheless exists. You can meet nobody
who denies privately that there is anxiety. The
Liberals and Tories admit the necessity of recover
ing Cabul nobody knows what next. The evid
ence is irresistible that all Afghanistan is in arms.
Every assurance which Lord Beaconsfield gave bas
been falsified by events. The saientific frontier"
has vanished, and a friendly Afghanistan is impossible.
The traveler who journeys westward in our fa
vored land should make up his mind to accept
without demur such military or judicial rank
and title as may be conferred upon him. lie may
