ttheine, Lut th;it while taking this step its fomnl
ern had tleciJeil to keep up their individual con
nection with the Institute in England. After
this a paper was read on Mr. IlerWrt Spencer's
" Theory of the Will."
The author showed that Mr. Spencer's philos
ophy denied all freedotretf will, aud made delib
eration to le only the mental asp-ct of the com
tuinIinp; of nerve-molecules. In the 'iuie of in
decision thest were colliding oue aains1 another,
but whta a decision had Wen re.u-htd the strong
est nerve- Htrcam had made head aaiut all the
rest, and was flowing on its way. Such accord
ing to Mr. Spencer, was the passage tif delibera
tion into decision, of hesitancy into volition.
Manifestly this net aside all freedom of will,
mad the whole prcess merely tiiechuiiichal, and
as Mr. Spencer allowed, was the negation of mor
al obligation. The paper criticised Mr. Spen
cer argument, and maintained that Mr. Spen
cer, from first to last, had only made one told
assertion, and b:id repeated it many times, Lut
hal given nit one iota of proof. Thirteen of his
arguments all he had presented were earefully
examined. and shown to be nothing more than
roufideut assertion. They were classified aud
replied to as follows : Frst, Mr. Spencer said
that "the real proposition involved in the dogma
of free-will " is " that every one is at liberty to
desire or not to desire." Against this Kant and
Hamilton were quoted, as admitting that we
must deire, but holding that free-will can re
strain desire. The martyrs conld not but desire
