FASHIOS NOTES.
(From the Quern.)
, To fix bonnet strings, many elegant
pins are devised, notably, two Arrows tied
with a ribbon, a small umbrella in pearls
with diamond handle, running hounds, owls'
heads, and ?ets of fire sparrows strung on a
silver thread. B sides these tht-re are eggs
represented by pearls in a nest.
BLick silk stockings, reserved for morn
ing Wiar, are dotted with red or blur butter
fliea. with a yellow antennae. For evening,
white laced stockings are embroidered with
gold and silver stars, or tiny silken florettes.
Dressy vhoes have remarkably short toes,
closely beaded ; they are made in white or
black aatin, or in the material itself. Styl
ish gloves come over the tight sleeves, fast
ening by three buttons at tbe wrist, and
thence extending upwards in a deep gaunt
leL Black, green, or pinkish grapes are in
vogue, both for ornamenting bonnets and
bail dresses in bouillonne tulle. Short
skirts are extremely -narrow, specially when
edged by the thick chicaree ruche now so
popular, and which must set perfectly stiff",
not to sway about between the ankles. At
tempts are made to introduce sleeves, in
flated from the armholes, but the innovation
has not as yet taken very much.
Sleeveless rests, opening from the waist
on a waistcoat, are very fashionable, but
they always require either a large collar in
etamine and embroidery or a full lace
jabot.
The last fashion in menus is a horned
shaped big in paper, on which is written
the name; from the inside peep out three
rosebuds. As an invitation to dinner, little
card.) are sent with a tiny gilt table en
graved upon them; should the invite be for
tea a teapot stands on the table; underneath
merely p pears the date and signature
A fleeting but rather uncommon mode is
to cut the crossbands from Indian shawls
and utilise them far trimming dresses. Thus
a polonaise in white summer vicuna will be
completed by large Indian revers in laveose
style, and the accompanying skirt of white
Sicilienne will hare the same bias get off by
silk pompon tassels falling over a thick
white chicaree.
Many dinner dresses are now made with
short trains. Some are in a rich Pompa
dour brocade with a pale blue ground, pow
dered with flowers in Japanese pink.
Flounces of point d'Alentjon cover the plain
blue apron, and the same lace veils the front
bodice with its short rounded basques; cock-

A party of gentlemen were supping
at an hotel in Boston when the conver
sation turned on Boucicault. One of
them, professing to know the actor in
timately, gave a programme of what he
was about to do. A second knew
much how much he was worth, and
how his funds were invested. A third,
who also knew him well, remarked he
been a guest in the hotel lately, but
scared by the presence of the smallpox
in the city, he had secluded himself in
Boxbury. A fourth assured the rest
there was no epidemic in the matter;
he knew for a fact that he had been
carried off by Miss , one of the love
liest girls in "Boston, and had secluded
himself with her. An old gentleman,
rising from the next table, joined the
group. Gentlemen,' he said, 4 1 am the
person you are speaking of. It always
affords me pleasure to learn in this man
ner what I am doing, where I am, and
what I am going to do; it saves me the
trouble of making up my mind. I have
no idea what I am worth, but I dare say
the. estimate of this gentleman may be
correct. As for the epidemic, I have
lately been vaccinated effectually.
The complaint is as indifferent to me as
the young lady of whom you speak. It
is very flattering to my sixty years to
b accused of being carried off in such a
lovely manner. I don't object to the
imputation, but the young lady might
see it in another light.' That elderly
gentleman turned"his back on the most
surprised party of the season.
A good old man from the country, on
being asked if he had purchased any
Easter cirds, answered: ""Why, no!
Why should I ? My old pack is good
