the ClumlKT of Commerce-, T. It. Elliott, 1'res

art ion ji taken In reference to the Affrieul
tural College.
Interesting remarks wire nude by Calvin
t b t her, dr.. . II. Itnmis, T. It. Klliott and
J. ?. I)iinbp, and the following was adopted
as expressing the view s of the meeting:
In th opinion of the business nu n of In-dianaiM.li-,
the Mate Agricultural College
should e located on some eligible f irm in the
v icinity of this city.
We are led to this opinion not only by our
local interests, but from a strong conviction
that this selection is of vital Importance to the
fullest success of the new Institution. The
general welfare aud the Ugliest permanent
prosperity of the College, should alone be the
guide in the choice of a site.
The advantages of Indianapolis are briefly
Firt That it is the central position, and
easiest 'f aeeess to all eitizcns of the Mate.
Second That the legislature can. from lime
to time, investigate the condition of the College
and thereby nvrc w isely nmnJ nnd improve
it
Third That this locality !eing the g-o-rraphic
il. politieal, and commercial center of
the Mate, would obviously attract the largest
number of students, and thus effect the great
est 1; m d.
Fourth Her, more than at any other
point, strangers from abroad would observe
the workings of the College, and thereby ad
vance the power of lndiaua iu other parts of
the country.
Fifth Lectures of eminent men, addresses
on special educational topics, apparatus, books,
uiaciiinery, improved seed, stoi k, etc., and nil
objects Iii science or art illustrative of the
ütmiiea pursued, could lie obtained here more
readily thin at any other points.
sixth The limited success of State educa
tional institution at mall interior points,
shows that the in-Te central the position, the
larger the measure of prosperity.
The meeting then adJournxl to meet at the
ChamlteT of Commerce this ( Wednesday ) eve
uing, at seven o.cl .ck, where, It is hoped, aud
expectid, that all citizens interested in the pros
perity of the College, and ot the city, will be
present.
