Money for the Races.
In reference to the mania for gain
bling' on racehorses, a curse which is
blighting" the lives of a very large per
cenkof the youth of the United States,
the St. Louis Globe-Democrat presents
the following1 phase of the evil:
"Where does the crowd get its money
for racing? This is a question that has
bothered a great many people. Men
who do not earn more than a living at
most are seen at the track day after
day, and some way or another they get
money to play every race. They leave
in the evening with just enough money
to pay their car fare home, but they
appear early the next day equipped
with the needful to try their luck
again. They can't all borrow, for race-
meeting time is a suspicious borrowing
period for people of limited means and
salaries. They can let grocery and
butcher bills go, and also the landlord
-for a time, but even that is not suffi
cient to buy an interest in a race horse
out of every collection that goes to the
post. If the money handed over the
pawnbrokers' counters and into the
boxes of the bookmakers was marked,
the source of a very large percentage
of it would be found. A very safe cal
culation, made by those in the busi
ness, puts the amount of money paid
out by the five leading pawnbrokers
at fifteen thousand dollars daily.
Ninety-nine hundredths of this goes
to the race track. The smaller
pawnbrokers average five hundred
to seven hundred dollars per day,
and it seems probable that in all the
followers of the bang tails get twenty
thousand dollars a day from this source.
They put up anything and everything,
and their money so realized all goes.
Some of the pledges are redeemed
within a few days, while many of them
are carried for months, until the owner
has recuperated sufficiently to take
them out. In the end seventy-five per
cent, of them are redeemed, but only
after the man's nose has been held to
the grindstone a good long season."

Ix New York city the free variety
shows given by traveling dentists and
quack medicine dealers are, according
to a New York exchange, never seen,
although within six or eight years
they have approached as near as
Brooklyn. The middle western states
are their favorite ground. A portable
stage is erected in a vacant lot and
minstrels and song and dance teams
give their performance in the flight of
flaring naphtha "lamps. After a half
hour of vaudeville a long-haired,
hoarse-voiced impostor takes the stage
and sounds the praises of a cure-all, or
offers to extract teeth or corns by
come new and easy process. When he
has accomplished some sales or opera
tions the variety show is resumed, and
this sort of thing keeps on for three
hours. It often happens that the best
show of the season in small places is
given by one of these concerns, and
there are medicine makers that have
as many as three such companies on
the road.
A few days ago some old musty doc
uments were found by which it was
learned that treasure amounting to
two million dollars is buried in the
City of Mexico. The documents bear
the official marks, and say that the
wealth was secreted by the order of
Emperor Maximilian. At a depth of
only a few feet several pieces of solid
silverware were found. The work of
excavation was interrupted by the
flow of water, but will be resumed as
soon as the water can be controlled.

The people of the Pacific coast are
reported as very emphatic in their de
mand for the deportation of the Chi
nese. At a recent meeting in Seattle,
called to secure an expression of public
opinion regarding the enforcement of
the Geary law, a resolution was adopted
declaring in substance that the attor
ney general should take possession of
the property of the Six Companies, and
use the funds secured from its sale to
send the Chinese out of the country.
An unknown girl saved a train with
two hundred and fifty passengers from
desruction in Oregon. She was on her
way home from a party when she dis
covered that a rail had been removed
on a high trestle, and then she pro
cured a lantern and signaled an ap
proaching train. She then went mod
estly on her way and never waited for
thanks.

Aphasia, or the loss of memory or
comprehension of speech, is a queer
complaint. A man who had forgotten
his sister's name always referred to
her as "that other woman." A person,
apparently otherwise in perfect health,
-will substitute the name of one article
for another totally different in the
most ludicrous way.
A five-cent stamp was sold in New
York the other day for three hundred
and twenty-five dollars, and it had been
cancelled at that. It was the NewHa
ven five-cent stamp of 1845, and had
'been cut from the envelope, which im
jpaired its value.
Padebewski, the great Polish pian
jist, carried away a larger amount of
imoney from America than any other
pianist ever did. He received one thou
iand five hundred dollars for playing
tone hour at Smith college.
