Paige, better known as " Dow Jr.," and as the author of the humorous ser ions highly celebrated under that name. We quote from one of the papers in ques tion : A man of no ordinary fame as a literateur, one who has achieved a Mattering celebrity, who was at one time rich, admired, and oourted, died in this city, at 9 o'clock last night, in the most abject poverty. No pen enn describe no language express the in tensity of filth, the gqustlidness of poverty, the ineft'able misery of. the apartments in which this man, unattended, uncared for, had breathed his last, and resigned his soul . to the Creator. We speak of Elbridge G. Paige, better known under his nom de plume of " Dow, Jr," the author of the famous 'Patent Sermons," which hayejii"1-ft"' i r,. t t or the reading world whose language is English. Ten and ,K a. .Mr. Paige was tlie editor 15TIT1") f I II s i ! ;i a iiki'A. ! i w"j"i"w ji 7.-r as a 75 j 5 ir. ( TtHI I 2 10 I l I 3 1 4 S ;i 00 I A 75 4 50 5 2i j proprietor of the New York Mercury, a pa per at that time remarkable for its pungent - wit, its proverbial good humor, and the prac ticable, as well as charitable views it ex pressed, of men and things. The Patent Sermons of " Dow, Jr.,?' were collected and published in book-form, and achieved a ce lebrity, particularly in England, which was very gratifying to the author. Reverses, .; however, overtook Mr. Paige, and he took to drink. Soon after his arrival, he wrote 1 for the Sun, then in its meridian, and his writings were universally commeuded. Of late years, Mr. Paige had leen connected with the Gulden Era, whose pages he has enriched with many kindly and gencrounly , conceived contributions. About nine o'clock last night, officer Nickerson waa informed that a man was dying in a house on the north side of Paci fic street, three doors east of Kearney, and immediately proceeded to the spot ; but ere ' he arrived the spirit had tied, and he found prostitute closing the eyes and jaws of what ' was once a man of mark, and fame. As we aid before, it would be utterly vain to at tempt giving the slightest description of the reeking HltK and squalidness of his apart . men I. The bel waa innocent of linen of all kind, and was saturated with water. The " floor was indescribably filth)', and the walls , dank with moisture and tilled with fungi. On th table stood two tin plates that had probably been used for some time, a::d never P vWJUtfAl trom ine moment iney were nrsp " soiled; lliese contained the remnants of his last supp-r. In a corner of the room was a small keg of pickled herrings, the maggots in which were far more numerous than the fish, and almost rivaled them in size. On a small table near his bed were two liottles containing liquor the curse of h.s later life and undoubted cause of his death. His feet were resting on the foot-loard of his loath-, some cot, and no portion of his cloth tug had ben removed except his hat. 'llxj coroner, Dr. McNitlty, was summon ed, awl he had the liody conveyed to the dead-house on Sacramento street. A post- itnortem examination will lie held, and an inquest, if rces-sary. Thus died Elbridge G-Paige once a man of wealth, jiosilioii .and celebrity. The readers of Milt sad article will hardly recognize in the subjvt of its discourse the .gallant "Dow, Jr.," wti ,lsel to drive out ito- Bloomingdale such a sufitv, pajr of black tjionies, and who was feted and earressed in - jN'tVY York as one of fortune's greatest la- isritZ. He was a gentleman cf abundant ienius; but success was hia ruin . It atrodueed him into "fast" associations, d to "fast " habits, and thence to povert, j,tyrier00 and death. Cm. (Jaz. v'vCol. No oho remedy is louder called for by the neces sities of the American people than a sure and sale curt) for Fever and Ague. Such a remedy we are now enabled to oiler, with a perfect certainty that it will eradicate the disease, and with assurance, founded on proof, that no harm can arise from its use in any quantity. That which protects from or prevents this disor der must be of immense service in the communi ties where it prevails. Prevention is better than cure, for the patient escapes the risk which he must run in violent attacks of this baleful distemper. Ths " Cure " expels the miasmatic poison of Fever and Ague from the system and prevents the devel opment of the disease, if taken on the first ap proach of its premonitory symptoms. It is not only the best -"iucdv ever yet discovered for this. 1. 1 ,l H ot coniulaii.1, I. " 1 w-sr-T trtitequantiiy we supply for a dollar brings it with in the reach of everybody ; and in billions districts where Fever and Aguo prevails, every body should have it and use it freely both for cure and protec tion. It is hoped that this price will place it with in the reech of all the poor as well as the rich. A great superiority cf this remedy over any other discovered fcr the speedy and certain cure of Iuter niiltciits is, that it contains no Quinine or miner al, consequently it produces no q.uinism or other injurious effects whatever upon the constitution. Those cnreil bv it are left as healthy as if they had never had the disease. Fever and Ague is not alone the consequence of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of disor ders arise from its irritation, among which are Neuralgia, ltheumati ,m, liout, Headache, llliiul i.i'is, Toothache, Karache, Catarrh, Asthma, Palpi tat ion Painful Affection of the Spleen, Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis, and lieiange meut of the Stomach, all of which, when originat ing in this cause, put on the Intermittent type, or become periodical. The " Cure " expels the poison from the blood, and consequently cures them all alike. It is au invaluable protection to iinmi grauts and persons traveling or temporarily resid ing in the malarious districts. It taken occasion, ally or daily while exposed to the iiitertou, that will lie excreted from the system, and cannot accumu late in sulhcieiit quantity to ripei: into disease. Hence it is even more valuable for protection than cure, and li-w will ever sutler from Intermittcnts, if they avail themselves of the protection this rem edv affords. Prepared by Dlt. J. C.
