TUESDAY MOBNING.....
...FEBRUARY 11
, ' Owe Position
""The position of the Opposition of Vander
burgh county is set forth in the resolutions
adopted on Saturday last. That position,
we believe to be a ' true expression of the
political opinions of a majority of the voters
of this county, as applied to the state of af
fairs to be acted upon in 18 60f
The resolutions are ihe work of a committee
of fire gentlemen who represent the various
branches of the Opposition as composed
here. The committee adopted them unani
mously, after a full and free discussion; and
the meeting to which they were submitted,
ratified the work of the committee without
the expression of a word of dissent. '
The Opposition of the First District, and
of the State at large, now have the position
of Vanderburgh county before them. We
are confident that it will be pronounced just
and reasonable not fanatical on the one
hand, nor yet cowardly or evasive on the
other. It is Euch a platform as the State
can be carried upon, with candidates to
suit.
The presentation of , the name of James
G. Jones, Esq, for the Attorney General
ship, was made for various reasons 1. His
eminent qualifications for the office. 2. His
popularity in this part of the State. 3.
The fact that his nomination by the Conven
tion of the 2 2d, on a platform approxima
ting in spirit to that adopted here, will give
the large body of old line Whigs and
Americans in Southern Indiana assurance
of the good faith which doubtless actuates
. i i . : c .u. -. ..
aauuon, in me tormation ot a party cotn-
nnsni CtT A.11 thft fdempnta nf nnrwt&itinn In
the Administration.
The instructions in favor of Don. A.Lange,
of Vigo county, for the nomination as Aud
itor of State, were called for by the general
sentiment in his favor, not only on the part
of the foreign-born, but also among native
citizens. Mr. Lange is known over the
wnoie 2iaie to be weu qaannea, and a
worthy man in every respect for the place.
He possesses the affections of his fellow
countrymen, and at the same time is an old
citizen of this country and State, with thor
oughly Americanized feelings and interests.
We wish to remark on our own responsi
bility, that the large majority of the com
mittee , and meeting were in favor of an
expression for Hon. Edward Bates for the
Presidency, and we are confident that nine
out of ten of the Oppositionists of the County
are of the same mind. But inasmuch as
one gentleman on the committee was favor
able to another prominent gentleman spoken
of for that office, but opposed to any ex
pression whatever in favor of anybody, even
for the man of his choice it was thought
best not to instruct at all for that office.
The committee desired the action to be all
unanimous.
We remark, in conclusion, that with State
and, National platforms similar to the one
. Vanderburgh county presents, and candid
ates equally unexceptionable, not only this
county, but this district, can be carried
against any men or declarations that the
Administration party is likely to offer for
the ratification of the people.
Financial Distress at the Fab West.
From gentlemen who have recently re
turned from the West, we receive melancho
ly accounts of the state of financial matters
in that region. The effect of inflated, ex
tended, extravagant speculations in wild
lands and town lots has recoiled with great
force upon not only the capitalists who have
invested their money, but upon the enter
prising pioneers who, while building np the
material interests of the country, used their
spare money and their credit in purchasing
new lands and estates. The crash of '57
bi ought down judgments numberless upon
the devoted heads of thousands of individ
uals of this class in Iowa and Minnesota,
and ruined men who would have been rich
had they sold out before the crisis.
More than one of the men who were the
first to plant civilization in the howling
wilderness, who have built up cities ana
towns, were offered extravagant prices for
their property and refused them. Instead
of selling out and securing a competency of
real capital, they involved themselves in
debt, and when the crisis came, which swept
away the weak banks and bankers of that
- region, their property was patched over
with judgments, and a large proportion of
it will have to be sacrificed for less than a
quarter of its real value.
We have heard of many individual cases
of peculiar hardship. One man from New
Orleans invested 30.000 in St. Paul a few
years since, and a few months ago be de
termined to "realize" upon it. He sold it
for eighteen hundred dollars I
A gentleman who lives in Minnesota in
forms us that a few days since he was pass
ing through the streets of St. Paul and saw
one of the citizens, who had been a large
" dealer in real estate, chopping down his well
curb with an ax. He stopped and iuquired
the reason of a proceeding so erratic and
apparently so rash. " Come into the yard
and I'll tell you, " said the chopper, and he
proceeded to state that he had been unable
to collect a cent of moneys due him, for
some time, and borrowing was out of the
question. lie bad not a suck ot wood in
bis house to cook his dinner witb, and as he
objected to starving and freezing, he was
sacrificing the well curb to bis absolute ne
cessities. In Davenport, Iovra, a gentleman who,
witb a partner, transacted the heaviest grain
and lumber business done in that section of
tbe' country, is now earning bis bread by
drivine: an express wagon. The city of
Davenport is dead broke. No watchmen,
no gas, no money in the city treasury to
pay for anything. Iowa is, in fact, worse
off than Minnesota, where a good crop of
wheat was raised for exportation Inst year.
Two good crops will restore the North-west
to something like prosperity. Hut tbe pres
sure it is now undergoing will ruin thousands
or individuals, and check the genera" growth
of that region for several years. Boston
aeraia.
The New York Post learns that a num
ber of gentlemen of that city have organiz
ed an association lor the establishment and
completion of an extensive Zoological and
Botanical Garden in the Central Park, in
imitation of Regent's Park, London.

A Quick Order to ax Expressman. The
following is a copy of an order to an ex
pressman, received a day or twosince: "Send
me 10 galls, of your be3t gin for $10. I
want it for my mother's wake and funeral.
She is.on her last breath, , Sometimes she
knows us and sometimes she don't. Send it
this evening precisely. "Boston Traveller.
Lola Montez ironically remarks to young
gentlemen: "You ought to know 'that
there are four things which always more or
less interest a lady a parrot, a peacock, a
monkey and a man; and the nearer you
can come in uniting these about equally in
your character, the more will you be loved.
This is a cheap and excellent recipe for mak
ing a dandy, a creature which is always an
object of admiration to the ladies."
It is said to be a fact that the Govern
ment pays the Oregon and California mem
bers of Congress $7,000 a session for mileage
and yet these same members travel to Wash
ington on free passes.
In 1823 there were but thirteen
newspapers printed in this State. There are
now 18 daily and about 150 weekly papers
in Indiana.

Stewart's stovo
rg l wj s ojv mum, j r.nnn
Cftlot of these truly and justly celebrated, newly
and greatly improved summer and winter Cooking
Stoves, of the unrivalled Stewart's Patent, and at
the only agency iu this city.
Thos. Scantlin's, No. 29 Main street, Vetxoecn
First and Second.
The first premlnm was awarded to this stove as
the best coal or wood-cooking stove, at tno Miutu
Western Indiana DUtrict Fair, held at this place
No stove ever devised combines as numerous or
important scientific principles, as this of Stewart s,
It broils, boils, bakes and roasts at the same mo
ment, without one dish imparting flavor to another,
or producing that sameness of taste In meats, and
gravies, which, to thedelicateaud fastidious of teste
makes so insuperable an objection to every other
cooking stove now in nse. With one-fonrth the fuel
employed in the best of stoves now in use, this most
perfect and complvte cooking apparatus performs,
simultaneously aud more perfectly than has ever
before been accomplished, everything required iu
the best provided families, so far as evoking- is con
cerned. When, too, it is borne in mind that the
most dolicate females can visit the kitchen when
the Stewart Stove is fully employed, and the tire is
at its highest, without the smallest unpleasantness
from the change of temperature, so little is the heat
from it diffused externally, an inducement is pre
seined for its universal employment never hereto
fore presented in any other stoVe. That, indeed, is
one of its principal attractions, as well as its greatest
wonder, bow heat is so economized and diffused
within the stove itself.Tind so little perceirtibly es
capes into the kitchen, a place where, with any of
the staves now iu nso, other thau Stewart's, it is
scarcely possible for any one, in warm weather
more imrticularly, to breathe with comfort.
For 20 years, Mr. Stewart hat been employed in
perfecting this stove, and since last February, ho
has obtained three new patents for improvements,
which, in liia opinion, aud theepiuion of all who
havo examined it, made it perfect. Within four
years, twenty tlioutand of them have been sold, under
a full guarantee, and not one has been returned.
These remarkable results have emboldened a host
f stove manufacturers to imitate the Stewart Stove,
but, save in exterior appearauce, which the old pa
tents (having expired) eualil -s tlietu to give, they
no more resemble Stewart's than chalk docs cheese.
These imitations are known by various names, but
they are all deficient iu important parti cuLirs, such
as the air-tight boxes, by which full control is kept
over the tire, and of the heat, by a draft dumper,
ingeniously contr vd, which also admits a constant
enrrent of cold air fia the outside ot the tile-box,
which again becomes heated air, and, passing iuto
the oven, is made available for cooking purposes.
, The agent ami subscriber is receiving the I text
imitation of the Stewart Stove, called ' Pride of tbe
West," which he will be happy todisposeof at two
thirds of the price of the genuine Stewurt's. Itia
possible, ot course, to cook with it, but it bears no
comparison to Stewart s.
The " Stewart " is sold by the agent under a full
guarartee to perform, as recommended, and if, with
in three monthsfrom purchasing, uuy fault is found
with thum, be will take them back, and r. fuml the
money. Housekeepers will be trm mind then, that
the genuine Stewart Stove, bought at tho oi.ly
agents here, will, with half the labor and one-fourth
the fuel, do snore and better cooking than any otner
stovo ever constructed.
