G. Vaughan, on North Tenth itet, was the scene of a beautiful reception last evening, giv en by Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Vaughan and Mrs. Edmund Allan "Williams. Over, two hundred guests were receiv ed during the evening. The beauty of the rooms was enhanced by the ar tistic arrangement of the floral decora tions. The doorways and windows were hung with curtains of smilax and asparagus ferns, the mantels were banked with pink roses and ferns and the pedestal jardiniere were filled with the roses. The lights were shaded with delicate pink shades. As sisting in the reception rooms were Mrs. Louise II. White, Mrs. S. E. Swayne. Mrs. William F. Starr, Mrs. C. W. Elmer, Mrs. Jennie Yaryan. Miss Elizabeth Nixon and Miss Elizabeth Strickland. In the dining room the assistants were: Mrs. Jesse Reeves, Miss June Elmer, Miss Nellie Howard, Miss Carolyn Hollingsworth,. Miss Gwendolyn Foulke, Miss Elizabeth Comstock, Miss Margaret Starr and Mls3 Dorothy Vaughan. During the evening music was furnished by a harpist. The guests from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. S. S. One of the most charming and suc cessful dances of the season was that given last nig'at at the I. O. O. F. hall by a number of prominent young women- The hall was beautifully decor ated in red hearts.- Those who acted as hostess were Misses Marie Davis, Mary Bescher, Earle Roney, Ada Eb enhack, Louisa Williams. Mr. and Mrs. Don Lamoreux of South Fourth street were the host and hostess to a delightful sur prise on Mr. Samuel Gebhart, last night it being the oc casion of his forty fifth birthday enni versary. Mr. Gebhart Is the father of Mrs. Lamoreux. The evening was spent in a most enjoyable manner. Mrs Lamoreux gave several beautiful piano selections. A surprise party was given last night at the home of Miss Marie Con- nerton. Games and music caused the time to pass very pleasantly. A lunch was served in courses. The oc casion was the 72nd anniversary of his birth, and he was made the recipient of an elegant pair of gold eye glasses. An incident of tbe occasion was a silk muffler by special deliver, sent by his granddaughter. Miss Ethel Kinley, of Cincinnati, who was unable to be pres ent, the package arriving in the midst of the festivities by special delivery. ' This meeting will be held Wednes day evening at 7:30 o'clock in the lecture room of the First Lutheran church, at the corner of South Elev enth and A streets. The object of this organization will be in every way possible to promote the best interests of the Sunday school work of our city. After the organization is complet ed the following questions will be dis cussed: "The Sunday School Leaders, ;ual! Scations, appointments, opportunities and tenure of office."- "The relation and duties ' of the Sunday School to the work of. the Y. M. C. A." An attempt of ths United States to secure posses sion of islands Nos. 1 and 2 in the strait o St. Marie by suit to quiet title failed under a decision of the cir cuit court of appeals sustaining the district court of the Western Michigan district in favor of the Candhr-Dun-liar Water company. The isands are on the line of the boundary between the United States and Canada and combined have an area of only two acre3. Improvements valued at 1100, 000 were made by the water company, which claimed to have a good title from the government since 1883. The court held that the government gave a good title In the first place and that it Is wrong to attempt to regain pos session after so many years. Because of the location of the Is lands on the boundary line and the treaty requirement that the United States must keep that line clear It Is understood tbat International compli cations may arise as a result of this declsicn.
