THE INDIANAPOLIS JOUBNAL, SUNDAY, JANUARY 30, 1887-TWELYE PAGES.
AN INCIDENT OF CMCKAMACGa.
nriffadier-General Carlin Jlidinjr Bare-Headed
and Alone Before the Enemy's Fire.
''Br!gadir jreceral Carlin, as far as I am
awr" rpmnrV- Dr. K D. Waterman t9 a
-twti&l reporttr, chfiS cot recently leen before
the public; nor do I bow know bU residence, nor
hare I seen or beard from him since the 6veiat of
which I am about to speak, out of regard for the
truth or bistorr. ine time was tue aiternoon
of thfc second day at Chickamauga. I was sur
geon and medical director of the (Major-general
Jeff C Davis's) Second Division of the old Twen
tieth Army corps. The riht of our army had
teen driven back and a iew line had been
formed by the regiments remaining and such
support as had been sent to them from Gen.
Sheridan's division, and, perhaps, Wilder. I had
no necessity to show the courage of a soldier,
nofvasitiny duty, but, remembering a con
temptuous allusion, in the report after Pitts
burg Landing, by the brigadier-general com
manding, to the medical director, that 'he sup
posed be was doing his duty, as he saw nothing
of him duriugj the engagement,' and, realizing
that I was not a favorite with the adjutant-gen-tral,
I determined to avert surh report as
to myself. So I rode to the front and re
ported in person to Major-general Davis, with
the remark, 'General, my work is organized at
Twin Springs, and going cn satisfactorily. Can
I be of service to you?' "The General answered,
'Yes, my staff are all out on duty. Stay here
nd keep my division flag and orderly here
whilst I confer with General Rosecracs,' who.
with his staff, was on a hill in our rear. The sit
uation was unknown to me, but I saw a regular
line of battle rapidly forming on my front two
rods'away, while half a mile in front of that, wind
ing over the rollinsr ground, I saw another line
of some army which I supposed to be ours.
Firing was sharp, both of muskets and batteries,
and the leaves of the scattered trees on the hill
slope were falling, as in autumn, from bullet
cuts, and the dirt was frequently dashed up in
front of and beside the white horse on which I
sat The line of our troops in front of me broke
away iron reiroaica oacKwarus un me Biope. 1 tie
line in front, firing steadily, advanced until I
could see clearly that it was not our
army. A new battery sent its balls around
me. Then I appreciated tLat I was in
peril without doing any good, so I turned to
the orderly who had charsre of the division flag,
to find him gone! I looked over the field, and
not a soldier of our army was in front of me
ave one officer on horseback who was ridine

eannon-balls were by this tine so frequent near
mo that I said mentally as each one 'struck or
whizzed past, 'That one did not hit me" I rec
ognized Brigadier-general Carlin, whom I had
; met before, and by this time he rode abreast of
' me a half rod to my left I whirled my horse so
as to brine myself on his left, two yards from
him and abreast, and spoke to him, 'General
Carlin!' He was very erect in his saddle, bare
headed, his face wnxlike in color, his unsheathed
sword in his right hunl and at his shoulder, his
eyes directed, statuo like, before him as he rode
from the enemy, and in the roar of artillery and
musketry he neither heard nor noticed roe, al
though 1 rode beside him for three or four rods.

of the firing. "
TUB REAL ESTATE MARKET.
Prices Advancing and a Better Outlook than
for Several Tears.
The real estate transfers for the last week al
most doubled those of the week previous, and
yet the transactions were not as large or numer
ous as was expected. It is the dull season of
the year in the real estate businees, aud no great
boom is expected for a few weeks yet. How
ever, the indications are that it is going to be a
. live spring and summer in real estate cinfes.
There is a maiked advance in the ruling prices
over last year, and real estate men are of the
opinion that city property will command better
prices than for ten years. The transfers for the
.week amounted to $78,'J90. There were but few
transfers where large amounts were involved.
The most notable sale was that of "Bird's
Point," at the corner of Indiana avenue and
Illinois street, by F. Bird to Charles Scholl, for
$25,000. The park at Broad Ripple, a beautiful
tract of ground : of thirty acres, was sold by
James Huffman to William Bnshraan for $3,700.
It is the intention of Mr. Bushman to make an
outlay of a considerable amount in beautifying
the park, and making it an attractive summer
resort. The only other transfer involving any.
considerable sum was that of a lot and residence
on South East street, by the Indiana National
Bank to Susan E. Brennan, for $0,300.
A Charge Without a Foundation.
Soua tiras ago Mrs. Mary J. McMillan, one of
the heirs of the estate of Robert M. Wingate,
deceased, of Brazil, asked for the removal of
Wm. " P. Blair and J. N. Mees from the trust of
executors of the estate on the ground that they
were in a conspiracy with a number of other per
sons to convert the property into their own
bands and defraud Mrs. McMillan out of her
share. Master in Chancery W. P. Fishback
filed bis report in the federal court yesterday,
which says that there is no truth nor foundation
in the assertion of Mrs. McMillan.

LINEN
DEPARTMENT.
During- the month of Feb
ruary we shall, be busy with
carpenters and painters fitting"
new shelving to several of our"
departments and otherwise mak
ing improvements in the interiof
of our store. In order to in-.
terfere as little as possible with
business, we shall fix one de
partment at a time. The first
to receive new fixtures will be
our Linen department, and the
coming week we want to reduce'
the stock as much as possible
as we shall be obliged to move
all goods remaining at tlje end
of this week and place them
with some other department.'
This will crowd us for a while,'1
and if we can reduce our stock!
largely we prefer to do so, and
willingly make a sacrifice in
prices to accomplish our pur-:
pose. We cannot go through
the stock and re-mark each'
piece, and therefore will make
a regular discount on all pur
chases in this department,
whether such purchases be
serving all customers alike, as
the prices will be the same as
marked and the discount taken ,
from the amount purchased.
Customers will find a full line
of Table Linens, Napkins, Tow-i

of them the coming week at
