UNION 8TOCKTARDS, INDIANAPOLIS, Not. . Cattle Receipts. 1.300; shipments, 400. The marketing of cattle continues of food volume, the receipts thus far this week being about 2u0 larger than the same time last week, but over 800 smaller than the corresponding time a year ago. The receipts to-day were nearly twice as large as a week ago and only a little smaller than a year ago. There were not a great many good kinds in the arrivals, and a large number of the consignments were stockers, a good many of them being calves. The market opened with the demand about steady for the best fat steers, and sales in that line were usually at steady prices. There was also very little change in the market for killers that sell from $1 to $4.50. The demand for the better grade of feeders was possibly more liberal, and the offerings were salable at firm prices. Ordinary stockers, how ever, moved slowly. The market for female butcher cattle was again rather quiet, and in not a few cases the cows were considered lower than yesterday. It was generally conceded that the present basis of prices was the lowest it has been this year. SOLD OX 'CHANGE YESTER DAY AT Ö 1-2 AXD THREE AT PAR. Traction Securities Sow Conslderetl Good Investment and Probably Will Advance. MR. MCULXOCH'S PREDICTION GROSS EARMGS WILL FALL LITTLE BELOW HIS ESTIMATE. Terminal Prospect and Growth of Trolley Line Systems Influenc ing t.ie Market. Stock Exchange members expect activity in Union Traction lines within the next few weeks. Yesterday $6.000 in Union Traction bonds were sold on 'Change, three being at and three at par. While much of the common and preferred stock is In the mar ket, it ruled no higher here than it has for some time. Common was bid at 50 and offered at 57. Preferred wis bid at 91, with no offer, showing that it is regarded as gilt-edged. Reports from Philadelphia, where the Indianapolis traction stocks are always In activity, showed 52 bid and GO asked for common. A local broker has said that he would offer some at 55 here. Other brokers regard Union Traction A3 likely to bulge at any time. The reasons for this are the terminal developments that are anticipated within the next thirty days here, and the reported earnings of the first nine months of this year, together with confidence in th development of the sys tem generally. There is no expectation of a common stock dividend, but the earn ings shown in the first nine months of the year unquestionably will make it a market able line at prices ruling constantly higher. The Union Traction Company has $4.000. 000 of common stock and 11,000.000 of pre ferred 5 per cent, cucumlative stock. Its mortgage debt is $5,000.000. of which $753,000 Is underlying bonds of the Anderson, Mun cle and Marion systems taken over by it. The company ias acquired all of the stock of the Indianapolis Northern (23,500,000), and has underwritten the bonds of that com pany amounting to $3,500.000. The Indian apolis Northern Is now In process of con struction. Basis for confidence in Union Traction securities is found In the company's capa bility to show large earning. These have grown tremenedously In the past two year. The earnings for the years 1900 and 1901. as shown by the following table, disclose this fully: 1901. 1900. Gross earnings $752.520 $447.616 Operating expenses 422.675 247,046 $329,845 $200,571 Fixed charges and sinking fund 260,065 177.94 $69.780 $22.625 Out of the $69,780 In 1901, $21,175 was paid on ths guaranteed dividends on preferred atock. When President MoCulloch said, some time agro, that he expected the gross earn ings for 1908 to reach a million dollars, he was not far wrong, as shown by the state ment of the company for the first nine months of the year. Taking this tatement as a basis, and estimating 60 per cent, as tha cost of operation for the year (and the accepted average per cent, is not that great), the approximate showing of the company for the entire year will be: Gros earnings, nine months $708.740 Estimated gross earning for 1902 93S.316 Estimated operating expenses 562.99 Deducting from the difference between the operating expenses and the gross earnings $375.327 the fixed charges and guaranteed dividends $2C7.240 leaves $68,087 as the net earnings for the year. While there is no expectancy that any of this would be ap plied to a dividend as the development of the road requires constant expense for bet terments, it does indicate that the develop ment of the business is reaching great magnitude. Other inspiring features of the Union Traction Company ar its relation to the Indianapolis property and the terminal company. The construction of the North ern Is adding the second great arm to the system that Is now the dominant one in Indiana. The flnacial Interests behind each are the same, and speculators look to the future as one full of promise. Nor is the speculation as to the far-off future, but it is expected that the announcements of the terminal company will strengthen the Union fecurtties. Behind all is the faith that It will not be long before the Union Traction Company will take over a num ber of the largest lnterurbane. and with the terminal company and the Indianap olis lines merged Into one gigantic corpora tion, will doubtless be the greatest inter urban system In the world. The stock, however, sold off several ioints towards the end of the session. Hrooklyn Kapid Transit and Metropolitan worked In harmonv with the course of Manhattan, though within narrower limits than their leader, but their quotations at the close were very little changed from those of yea- terday. The general market at the begin ning, in pite of lower prices from Lon don, made some advances, but later lost part of them and remained dull, while the speculation was directed towards Manhat tan and the other traction stocks. Towards the close of the afternoon there was a gen erally strong tone all through the list. Strong features were Amalgamated Copper, which rose 3 points: Sugar, which advanced on further increase in, the price of the company's products, and the general list of Industrials. Among the railways. New York Central was .a strong feature, with a gain of about 3 points, this advance being caused by the announcement that the company will refund a large amount of its bonds on a lower interest-bearing basis. The coal stocks, notably Reading, were very strong and made fair gains. Money rates were somewhat lower for call, but the position of time money did not change. Mnoh Dealinfg In Specialties. Granger Farwell A Co.'s Telegram.) NEW YORK. Nov. 30 The market was again one of specialties. Manhattan was the center on the floor, on reports which have been sent out by news agencies to day that It will be leased to the under ground railway under a 7 per cent, guaran tee. Reading was strong on buying for both accounts. Southern Pacific was helped as much as possible by the pool. Missouri Pacific was bid up easily in the day and considerable stock unloaded. There was a good deal of evening up in the general i market and the close was only fractionally changed from yesterday. The room traders seem to be willing to buy stocks on a quick break for a turn. Time money is a tritle easier and foreign exchange is strong. SOLD THE MARKET DOWN LOGS VXLOADED WHEAT, CAUSING A BREAK IX PRICES. Corn and Oats Also Close at Frartlonal Declines 'fiog Products Followed the Lead of Grains. CHICAGO, Nov. 1 20. Heavy realizing by longs was the feature to trading In wheat to-day and the close was at a lower level, December being down &V4c, corn c lower and oats c lower. January provisions closed from 5ö7ftc Jo 10c lower. Covering by shorts carried December wheat up to within He of May soon after the opening, but on the realizing by longs the market declined again. It was estimat ed that the leading long who has been buying May for some time past unloaded anywhere between 5,000,000 and 7,000.000 bushels during the day, which was the chief factor in the sudden drop in prices. Commission houses also sold freely. The Southwest was credited with large pur chases, St. Louis taking a large part of the offerings, although local traders also took advantage of the opportunity to cover short lines. Higher cables and nmall receipts were bull factors at the start. December opened a shade to If lc higher at 76c to 77c, and after selling up to 77c, a few minutes afterward there was a decline to 7&Sc and the latter part of the session prices held about steady, the close being HttVfec lower at 75c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 662,000 bu. Primary reeclpts were 1.253,000 bu. compared with 1,107.000 a year ago. Minneapolis and Du luth reported receipts of i0S cars, which, with local receipt of M cars, 13 of con tract grade, made a total of 1,001 cars, against 1,086 last week and a year ago. Corn ruled active and irregular with still further covering by shorts. Improved weather conditions caused considerable re alising, resulting in a sudden decline early In the day, but buying was extremely good at the lower level and a firm feeling pre vailed. The strong cash situation was a supporting factor. The late weakness in wheat caused some selling and the close was steady at the lower figures. December opened He to t higher at 59c to 59c, de clined to 57c, advanced again to 59c, but closed c lower at &8c. Receipts were 167 cars, five of contract grade. There was a renewal of activity In oats and prices had a range of He an innova tion of some note in this pit. The strength in other grains was an early bull influence, although commission houses were good buy ers throughout the day. The close WSul steady, with December He lower at 30Hc, after selling between SOHc and 30H30c. Receipts were 102 car. There was a fair trade in provisions and after a firm opening there was a decline on realizing by longs and under the influence of the break in grains. January pork closed 10c lower at $15.60, lard was 10c lower at $9.20 and ribs 5&7Hc lower at $8.05'S 8.07H- Estimated receipt for to-morrow: Wheat, 70 cars; corn, 115; oats, 105; hogs, 29,000 head. Good tialn Made) on Very Heavy Deal Ins Mixed t hanxei la General List Money Market Outlook NEW YORK. Nov. 20. Except for a few Irregular and comparatively unimportant moves to-day's stock market was very lik. that of the prcretling days of this week in the sense that attention was focus. 1 r largely on one issue Manhattan. The in creased strength of that stock added to the fast growing belief that important events dealing with the local transportation sys tem are impending. Just what form these probable events will take is still a matter of guess work. Manhattan sold up to 1544 and made a net gain of 3V points on vtry heavy transactions. The remainder of the list, irregular for the greater part of the day, made some Improvement in the Baal hour and the close was easy, though below the best. Considerable trength was shown by the Gould stocks as a group at various times, and there were spasmodic rallies elsewhere. The early strength of Sugar was reported to be due largely to short covering and the further gains in the new Rock Island is sues resulted from what appeared to be in side buying. Fractional losses were r -corded in the early dealings by all the coal stocks, as well as by the more active In dustrials, while the international group went below London's quotations, though hardening somewhat later. The early re action was followed by substantial recov eries in St. Paul, Iowa Central, Minneapo lis Sc St. Louis, Louisville & Nashville, Illi nois Central and Texas & Pacific, while Missouri Pacific was conspicuously strong. So obviously professional were operations at this time, however, that another reac tion set in, with material declines in some of the issues named, L. A N. breaking- sharply. Union Pacific and Southern Pa cific were then inclined to heaviness and Manhattan gagged in the absence of con firmatory news. Metropolitan and Brook lyn Transit sold off to the previous day s figures, but there was nothing like a gen eral selling movement, the bear element showing some timidity. The further ad vance of Manhattan in the afternoon stim ulated the rest of the list, and '-good" buy ing of Amalgamated Copper was reported. The demand for stock came chiefly from the shorts and was confined largely to Copper, Sugar, Reading, New York Central and Manhattan. Advices from London re ported a very bearish feeling there and sales for that account amounted to about 30,000 shares, with little buying in return. Amsterdam and other European financial centers also sold this market moderately. Time money conditions, while no mora acute than they have been receatly, con tinue to excite some apprehension. The demand to-day was moderate, but lender were still holding off for a stiff rate. Call money was easy and again in light request. There was practically no Chang In the foreign exchange situation. A small trans fer to New Orleans was made by the local banks to the subtreasury. As compared with last week the banks have lost only a nominal sum to the subtreasury. The bond market was much quieter and fluctuations were slight either way. Total sales at par value were $1,865,000. United States bonds wer all unchanged on the last call.
