The damage to the parties was not much, but we observed that they both had very muddy clothes, which appeared to indi cate that they must have had a rough-and tumble fight. It is uow very dangerous attempting to cross any of our principal streets, as one rues a risk of falliag aad breaking some of his limbs. The prisoner took an appeal to the District Court. WE UNDERSTAND M. Charley no mistake. understand that business in town will be very genemll}* suspended to day. This is a» it should be, and we hope to see the stores all closed. JSOTUINU was transpiring in the Jus tice's courts yesterday. We do not think our Justices of the Peace are making fortunes now adays. WIIO was that distinyuished individ that several individ uals who are not willing to ask permission of us to answer th article in Tuesday's paper on usury, have expressed a desire to do so. To those individuals we will say thit our columns are open for n free discussion and answer to anything we may write, provided the writer uses language proper for one person to use to ward another. This sul ject of pleading usu ry is becoming a very serious affiir, anil we are informed will be quite common with those who may not be prepared to lift encumbrances on their property, when they fall due. We can see one effect it is going to have already, and that is, it will drive away from our county all foreign capital, which has been sent hither lor investment. One gentleman has alrtaJy sent back six thousand dollars which he had only received the day before, informing the pirtics East that it would not be safe to loan it here at present. Money brokers in this city tell us that they will net let another dollar of money go out of their hands, unle-s they ro ceivo definite instructions so to do. It will not only have a tendency to keep away capit al, but it will send home whatever may be here now, so soon as it can be collectcd. It is perhaps ss well that this money should go home, for it is certainly ruining those who bor^ row it, and pay even ten per csnt. interest. GKAXD JURY.—We wish to pay all due respect to Courts of Justice and to those who are entrusted with the administration of the laws, but we feel bound to say that the Grand Jury now in session is entailing a vast expense upon the County without conferring the slightest benefit on anybody in return.— Mr. I'Oonnor, the District Attorney, has left lor the term, and there is no one to draft or sign an indictment, even if the Grand Jury should wish to present one. and so tiny can do no business, were there never so muc to be done. We arc assured, however, that Mr. O'Connor did not leave until he was satisfied that all the business before the Grand Jury had been finished. It seems that there are some men on the Grand Jury who regard their posi tion as a job to be nursed, and who arc deter mined to hang on to t'ueir fee of two dollars per day as long as they can induce uny of their associates to sit with them. Accordingly, these gentry have been most perji'verinijly stirring up all sorts of ca3ej, and smelling with the acuteness of a blood hound upon every trail which promised to lead to lengthy examina tions of multitudes of witnesses. They have sncceeded in consuming three days of the pres ent week in a fruitless inquiry into a matter in which Mr. O Connor told them on Saturday it would be a criminal waste of time and mon« ey to find a bill. This was done, we believe, for the express purpose of prolonging the ses sion, and gutting the fee*. We do not mean to apply these remarks to all the members of the Grand Jury, for there are men in that body who are above such contemptible peculation, but those whom this ebon fits may put it or:. Every day the Grand Jury is in session it cos's the County not less than seven ty qr seventy-five dollars, and therefore when they get through their business they ought, in decency, to adjourn. TnE Rock Island An/us MESSRS. 179 SPOKEN.—By the arrival we have the latest intelligence from the clipper Big Betty, which sailed from here on Friday last The Betty a few miles below Oquawka all on board well. The chamber maid had a slight attack of the ague when op posite Muscatine, supposed to have been brought on by a eight of the Marshal of that city, who attempted to board the Hetty, AJtlim wttt ae- oli Co— but was kept at a proper distance with poles. The chambermaid, at one time, resided in the vi cinity of Mueeatine. A coop full of chickens and turkeys was among the good things ob servable on the deck of the toy—prepara" tions for Thanksgiving, undoubtedly. The of ficers of the were informed, at a wood yard a few miles above the place where they sat the B*iqf, that the proprietor's hen roost had been robbed the night previous. A re xsarkable coincidence. The had made a Betty Tirj good ran up to the time the Adtlia met says that the beef and pork packing business has commenced in good earnest, and ia likely to prove, dnring the winter, a very important branch of their trade. The packers are Messrs. S. A. Babcock, Mr. Howe, John Deitz and John Shandler.— The same paper says that fifty cows from Ohio passed over the river last week, going to Clin" ton county, Iowa. O'tfeil, Ilickey & Co., of No. Michigan street, Chicago, 111., and No. 9 Front street, Davenport, will please accept our thanks for a fine article of the "critter" (old Bourbon) to assisist us in propeily keeping Thanksgiving. If the article sent U9 is a spec* imen of their whole stock, we are satisfied our citizens can do no better than to call on the above firm. They have a very heavy stock of all kinds of wines and liquors, cigar*, etc. COMPLAINT ia made by onr business men, especially by dealers in grain, beef and pork, of the high rates of freight charged on the Chicago tie Kock Island railroad They say the rates are higher than on any other road running into Chicago, and that it has a bad ef fect upon the business of our place, from the fact that it deters farmers, living as near the Burlington road or the Galena road as they do this place, from bringing their produce to this market. Ot course, if thi9 is true, the extra eharge cornea out of the farmers, for dealers must purehase at such prices as will repay them for eost of transportation. It seems hard that such an uufair discrimination should be made, not only against the producers, but against the interests of a town, which has done more to build the road, than any other of its sise and ,/ i... VAL usually very quiet and orderly town ship of Pleasant Valley was startled last Tues day by a report that one o( her citizens had been stubbed, and probably Would not recover. It appcxid that the cattle of one Patrick Brad ley had become very troublesome to a Mr. Fen* no, who lives on the river road near the vil lage of Valley City. Fenno had repeatedly warned li'alley that he should tako steps to arrest the further straying of his (Biadley's) cattle upon his (FennoV) land. L'radley paid no attention to thi warning, but continued to allow his catih) to roam juat wherever they pleaded. At last Fenno tied up one of Brad ley's horses and Btarted over to inform its own er tl.at he could have said horse by paying for the damage done the crept of Fenno, and by promising to keep his cattle at home in future. Bradley was very much enraged at Fenno for ty ing up his horse, and u»«d very harsh lan guage in replying. Fenno not relishing the language uBed by Bradley told him that ii he and his two eons would come out doors, he would thresh all three. The old man Bradley then told Fenno that if he would go round bv a wheat stack he would give him a chance to thresh hi.xi single handed. This Fenno consent ed to, and at it they went, but as F'enno was gettiug the advantage, one of the Bradley boys cauie to his father's asaistan e. Two of Fen no's brothers who were at work near by, eee'.Dg the rnuss going on, hastened to the spot and going in, the fight was soon general. During the muss one of the Bradley? went into the houee, and procuring a large Butcher's knife, again repaired to the scene of the fight— Watching his opportunity, he slabbed Henry II. The young man, Patrick Bradley, Jr., who did the stabbing, has fie 1, and a reward of tifty dollars is offered by Geo. W. Fenno, for hia arrest.
