It was in this interval that a Minister ascend

in inferior European State addressing two or
three thousand people at Castle Garden.
We rejoice to perceive that the prominent
MIinisters of all denominations in NewYork have
wisely abstained from mingling in this political

such men that we look confidently in all feverish

afflicted almost every year with paroxysms and
convulsions which seem to demand blood-letting

people are not so often nor so easily wrought

that prodigies appear first to our commercial

Or perhaps it is owing to the peculiar character
of the multitude assembled in that city. Or
in short, the fact is so. Each year the city
becomes, for a while, a scene of some popular
ferment and fury, a sort of social Hellgate, ua

IvNutAs Ix'rEnvtl.w.-'The final interview of
the Prairie Indians in Washington, with the
President, took place on the t6th. After first
waiting upon Col. Lea, Indian Commissioner,
the Indians left the Bureau for the President's
House, where, after waiting a short time int the
East room, they were conducted into the circu
lar receptionm room, a considerable party of
ladies and gentlemen being gathered to witness
the interview. Amongst them we noticed Mrs.
Filhnore, Madatme Kossuth, who sat at Mrs.
Fillmore's side, and the Countess Pulzsky; tMr.
Secretary Stuart, Postmaster General Hall.
Attorney General Crittenden, and W. IW. Cor
coran, Esq.
Col. D. D. Mitchell, of St. Louis, Superintend
ent of Indian Affairs, was present, and assisted
in the business of the interview.
AIr. Conumissioner Lea apprised the President
of the object ofthe Indians' call upon him. They
were soon going home, and had called'to pay
their parting respects tohim; and to the Indi
ans he intimated that, had they any thing to
say, the President would no doubt listen atten
tively to them.
After an introduction, and speeches by the
Indians, the President presented each of theou
with a valuable medal, hearing his likenesa.
The medals were placed on the neck of each of
the Chiefs by Major Fitzpatrick. The Presi
dent then pointed them to the American flag
which was held up before themn. Addressing
them, he said : "I shall present each of you a
flag like this. When you raise if at your homes
you must remember that you le Olle with us:
that you are part of the same pisple, for one

A general shaking of hands then took plase,
dluring which Madame Kosoath and Countee.
Pulrsky showel particular interest in the
squaws present, much to the satisfaction of the
latter.
After the return of the Indians from the White
IHouse we hadl an opportunity of ascertaiting
the result of the day's proceedings on their
minds. They were highly delighted, and repre
sented the great relief they experienced in the
lifting off of a weight th.t had been theretofore
pressing heavily on their spirits. They said
that as soon as they saw the President they
knew be was a good man, and the knowledge of
this completely relieved their anxiety.
We have reason to think tha"the remarksabth

T'H TnoreLa It UAH..-Plurality Wie
System.--A long document, addressed to Presi
dent Fillmore, has been published by Chief Jus
tice Spmuel G. Brandebury, Judge Perry~A.
Broechus and B. D. Harris, Secretary of State
of Utah, in reference to the reasons that led
them to abandon their official posts at Salt Lake
City, and come on to Washington. It is, how
ever, but a repetition, in an extenled form, of
the statements that have already been made.
The hostile and seditious feelings of the Mormon
Governor, Brigham Young, and- thle Mormons
generally, to the United States government and
its officers, are said tohave been such asto
make a longer stay there not onlyddhngerous but
The officers repeat the charges of profanityo,
blasphemous allusions by Governac Young to the
death of General Taylor, and contemptsus.ule.,
fiance of tie government of the United States. I
The Mormon Governor is also said to have abuned
was agreater mn than Geoge Washington
that he " knew more than George Washington
ever did," etc. The excitement of'the people
became so great that the officers feared for their
lives. Misappropriation of the United States
funds is another of the charges brought against
Governor Young. The vice of polygamy, ac
cortling to these recreant officials, has reached
an ontrageous height. We extract the following,
in reterenee to this point, from their letter to the
President :
" We deem it our duty to state, in this official
comlmunication, that polygamy, ra1 " plurality
of wives," is openly avowed and practiced in.the
territory, under the sanction and in obedience
to tile direct commands of the church. So uni
versal 1 is this practice, that very few, if any, lead
ing men in that community can be found who
have not more than one wife each, which creates
a touopoly, and which was peculiarly hardulion
the officers sent to reside there. The prominent
men in the ciurch, wilose example in a111 tino
it is the ambition of the more humble to niitate
have each many wives, some of them, we are
credit ly informed and believe, as many as twenty
or thirty, and by Brigham Young, the Goernor,
evcn a greater number. Only a few days befbre
we left tihe tetritory, the Governor was seen ridling
through the streets of tce city in atin omnibus,
witlh a large company of tis wives, nore thIan
two-thirds ofwitom had itfaits in their armts-a
sure sign that the evil is increasing. It is not
uncoolon to find two or mtore sisters married
to thle san.e nut; andi in one inttance, at least.
a nl,.her aond her two ldaghters are among the
wives of a leading member of the church. This
practice, regarded and punished as a high and
revolting crime in all civilized countries, would.
oft' course, never be made a statuatory offence by
a i1 Mor0lln Legislature ; and if a crime at com
ton t aw, the court woueld be powerless to correct
the evil, with 3Mormon juries."
The document shows a most monstrous state
of social as well as political morals in Utah.
The Washington Union (referring to the above
report) says:
" We have received from a reliable quarter a
loter intbrming us that a Report, purporting to
bIe the Report of the officers of the Territory of
Utah to the President of the United States,
which was published in the NewYork Herald of
the 5th instant, is an artful perversion and fal
sificalion, in many of its essential features, of
the true Report made to the President, and has
appeared prematurely in print, without the
knowledge or consent of any person or persons
properly having charge of it. We iunderstand
that the official Report is now before the Presi
dent, and will be communicated to Congress in a
day or two."
