L)AILY CRESCENT THE BLACK POND; OR, THE CHIEFTAIN'S GRAVE. Few have visited the flourishing town of New Baintree, in Massachusetts, without becoming acquainted with the beautiful and romantic vi cinity of Black Pond. Shortly after the expiration of the French and Indian War, a hardy settler named Warner built his little cot near the pond, on the banks of the beautiful Ware River. On the morning when the defenders of Fort Edward sallied forth under the command of Colonel Williams, to meet the advancing enemy, led by Baron Dieskan, when the former suffered death, War ner, then a private, was one of the last to seek the retaining shelter of the fort, and distin guished himself a short distance from its walls, by a long and obstinate " hand to hand" with a gigantic chief of the Oneida tribe, whom he killed, and according to the rude fashion of the day, bore his scalp in triumph to the camp. During the war, by his courage and ability, he won the then enviable title of Captain. One morning, a few years afterwards, he sur prised his wife by his speedy return from the forest, where he had intended to remain during the day. He entered the house without speak ing, and hastily seized his rifle. She noticed the firm step, the unwonted flashing of his eyes and stern compression of his lips. " ItHusband," she said, with an anxions look, "what has occurred to move you thus C' " Moved," he replied, " do I really appear moved ? yet it may be so, but not with fear fe'car cannot move me." "Fear!" she exclaimed with alarm, "have you been in danger ? speak, oh, I entreat you!" lie smiled, and that smile served partially to dlissipate her apprehension, while she shrunk iack almost ashamed at the vehemence of her alarm. " Do not agitate yourself, my dear wife," he replied, ' you see I am now safe and with you: I,ut bring me my box of flints, and that quickly, i;r 1 require one that will not miss fire." lWhen she returned with the box. lie, after a minute selection, affixed one to the hammer ol his rifle, and carefully cleaned the vent-hole and reloaded it. " Now," lie said, as his eye glanced rapidly along the barrel of his piece, " 1 am now ready." His wife, who had noticed all these precau tions, said in a calm but sad tone, "' I fear you deceive me." " If I have kept aught from you," he said, "it was affection that prompted the act; but now youshall know all. A week since I learned that an Indian had been lurking in our neigh borlhood. From inquiries he made of the neigh bors, I found that 1 was the object of his search. This morning I unexpectedly saw him. He re treated hastily, but turned fbr a moment with a look of deadly hatred and defiance. I under stood its language--the looks of an Indian are more expressive than his words-it plainly said, ' your life or mine.'" " Oh, my husband, you surely will not go forth to meet this dreadful savage-it would be unutterablemadness. Why cannot you fly from this horrible place, and thus elude him." "Fly--ah. it capnot he, poor trembler. By heavens it shall never be said I fled from s sin gle Indian: besides I know this blood-thirsty savage: it is Black Wolf, the celebrated chief of the Onedias, and the brother of him I slew at Fort Edward. In revenge for his brother's death he now seeks my life." "Then for my sake." said the afflicted wife, and for the sake of the poor little innocent-she pointed to the cradle which contained a prattling infant of two summers-do not go alone." " It must be so," he replied firmly, though apparently moved by her affectionate appeal "my safety depends upon it. As a savage, 1 must meet him as such, and defeat him as such, and that in his own barbarous manner. Remember you are the wife of a soldier; he firm, or at least, he said with an emotion he could not control, "do not unman me. If I fill"--he hesitated fbr a mo ment, then suddenly caught his child, kissed him again and again, pressed a burning kiss on the coldl row of hii wife, hastily embraced her anl rushed from the house. lie had not been absent an hour befire he dis covered the lurking place of the lndian. The wary eye of the savage was too busy not to see as soon as lie was seen. 'Tiheni commenced those fearful movements by which the sons of the forest strive to induce their l'es to leave some portion of the bodly exposed to their deadly rifles. The chief, though the most renowned of his tribe. iund tile captain in every respect his equCl, anl after half an hour iof intense Isahir :ld suslpense, neither had gained any advantage. The Indian at this moment saw Warner leap lroi his lurking place and disaplpear behind the trunk of a large fallen tree. What was now to be done, he scarcely knew--he was too wary not to apprehend some stratagem by Warner; he therefore neither advanced nor retreated, but kept behind a gigantic oak. At length to his great joy hlie discovered the hat of his enemy slightly emerging above the body of the tree tiand quickly disappea:r. The Indian smiled with savage delight as he muttered, " The pale face is a great warrior, but a fool." The sonsof the forest would not lie when lie could stand; he would not expose his head and feet at a time. During the soliloquy he was slowly poisiing his rifle, ready to take the first advantage of the imprudent mnovements of his adversary. The hat was now so clearly visible that he fired. It quickly fell, and was silent for a few minutes, then a wild exulting war-whoop re-echoed through the forest, andu the Indian rushed for ward to secure the scalp of his faillen enemy. When within two rods of the fatal tree, lhe paused with amazement. Before him, with a poised rifle, stood the powerful form of Warner. One look of unutterable hate, it was the chief tain's last. The report of the rifle resounded through the forest, and the Black Wolf lay writhing among the fallen leaves. The Captain was not the fool the Indian haud supposed him. Feeling that neither had gained any advantage, and being desirous of brinrine the comsbat to an issue, lie resolved to hoazsr all to s stratagem, which, if successfiul, would give him ita tal fidvautage over the tlueida. lIe therefiore threw himself behind the tree, and slightly elevated his hat upon a stick. This the Indian saw, and afterwards fired at with the re sult we have shown above. Warner looked upon his dead foe with the stern joy which warriors feel. " You have been a great chief, but a cruel warrior," he soliloquized, ' yet your weapons have been used with courage and skill; you shall not be deprived of them even in death." With cords he aftixed the rifle that had proved fatal to so many, to the cold Iand, pIlaced the tomahawk and scalping knife in their wonted places, tied it large stone to the feet and placed the body in the canoe. When near the center of the pond, he lifted the inanimate form with his thee towards the setting sun, and thesmooth waters became the Indian's grave. Warner, though a conqueror, returned with sadness to his friends, whose joy can be better imagined than described. From that day this beautiful sheet of water has been known as " Black Pond." Il.:sEsltssl..-Did you ever, in the course of your peregrinations around down, drop in at the theatre during rehearsal If not, you have a treat in store. Now, don't make a rush for either theatre, because you can not be admit ted in a body ; but go slyly, softly; one at a time, steal up the dark, deserted stairs, and snugly ensconce yourself in some cozy corner, and you shall see what you shall see. A sMtent'vs iS lli)rt:.--A letter in the Journal of c'ommerce, dated Rome, Feb. 21, says: The insolence of the French officers here is a soulrce if complaint andi annoyance, not only to thie native talians., but also to foreigners. A day or two since. an American gentleman was indffensively sitting on a seat on the Corso, whenll an ofiicer stationed near by came up, ansi without any provocation thrust at him with his sword on the shoulder and leg, each time cut ting through his clothes to the skin, and had it not been fir the thick coat, blood would have been shed. Even ladies walking on the narrow 'idsewalk are rudely thrust aside, and forced to walk in the scud and dirt, by these soldiers, picked up perchance from some low hovel in the provinces. It is agreed, however, by all. that a storm of retribution is hovering over, and will ere long burst with fury upon these mercena ries. It may not be this year or next: but time will only add to its fury, and make vengeance more certain of its work. On Tuesday evening, the 10th ultimo, Mr. Htooker, of tihe banking house of Pakenhamn, Itooker & Co., gave a ball to his American friends in Rome, at which many of the English ani IRoman nobility were also present. This is conceded by all who attended, to have been the finest thing of the kind ever given in Rome. Among those present, we noticed of the Ameri cans, from NewYork, Mr. W B. Post, Mr. Conkling, Gen. C. Cooper, Mr. Lynch, Mr. ltemsen, with their families; from Boston, Mr. Lumson and Mr. F. C. Lowell; also, Mrs. Fow ler, from Washington, and Mr. Newbery Smith. from Philadelphia. Visitors from Missouri, Georgia rano Lsuisisnn, were also pointed out to us. Of the Roman nobility, we saw Princes and Princess Massino, the Plince ('orsino, Duke of Rigianio, Princes Altheii, Ilarbeimi and Rospig. horsi, were also present, andi others whose nomes we did not ascertain. Tihe Marches Bargagli, the Tuscan Emlbassodor, and the Marchess DIargagli s tihe Mexican Minister and his daugh ter; the wife and daughter of the late Austrian P'rince and Princess de Monalthon, Lady Lake anil f t.ily, Sir Robert and Lady Arbuthnot. and many others of the elite okthe English and ither horeigners now in Rome were also present. MIrs. Crawford, wife of the celelbrated American sculptor, assisted Mr. IHooker in doing the honors of the evening, witll a simplicity andt grace, that showed her a worthy representative of tihe fair sex of our noble republic. Indeed. tihe whole affair went off in such a manner as to leave nothing to ie desired by the most fastidious. On Monday evening a ball and dinner are to be given by the Americans, in honor of Wash ington's birtlhday. Thus in foreign lands, the American spirit is manifested in a manner worthy of the palmy days of our republic. TH: I.,Y S:I't-l.caItE.--We find the following in the Debatl : 'According to the arrange mlents lately made on the subject of the Holy places at Jerusalem, the Ottoman Porte has de cilued o restoring to the French: 1. The key of theouter door of the great Chlurch of Bethle heIl and those of the side doors, so that the Christians will be no longer the prisoners of the Greek monks: they will be henceforth able to enter andgo out freely. 2. Two gardens belong ingo to and adjoining the church, and which the Ireeks had t:aken possession of. 8. In the Church of the Iloly Sepulchre at Jerusalem, the F:rench will receive a portion of the lower part of the seven arches of the Holy Virgin. For more than a century the French have not had the use of the gallery built over them. 4. The Franks and Latins will be admitted to share in the tomih of the Holy Virgin, placed under the brook of Cedron, in the valley of Jehosaphat. 5. Instead of exacting the restitution of the silver star, stolen by the Greeks on the let Nov. 1846, the French shall content themselves by replacing it by another, after the departure of the numerous pilgrims, who will this year flock to the place at the solemnities of Easter. TI.+ rlorer is, of course, proportionateto he lowly ,:a,ditien of these mountaineers, some heep, soon :imes a few hogs, or even chickens, 'There girl. are attired in their best, or w;at. pieces ,f i,,ld or silver they may possess, are Itrrung upon a string, and neatly attiteh ' to the braids of their hair. Thus fitted out, every girl who desires to fnd o husband betakes herself to the fair. She quits he house of her father, perhaps forever, sanid aids her mother adieu, quite ignorant of what roof is to shelter or what fate awaits her jour ney's end. As to her fortune, it is in the little .art that attends her, Theobject of her jour ney is never mistaken, nobody wonders at it, nor •s there occnreon for a publle officer to make a record of thi deetl. On the other hand, the ouths wiro w.1 to procure themselves wives, hasten to the fair, arrayed in the very best skin garments their chests contain. These savage ;oking chaps, who would be quite enough to make our young Inadies run and hide themselves, proceed with a igood deal of interest and rest,to inspect the fair mountain laes that erebrmht thither by their fat hersand theiruanelees, eee. rnny side glanerr anl wistftl looks toward the captivating merchandise. He gives his fancy a free rein, and when ihe finds one that seems to claim his preference, he at once addresses the parents, asks what they have given her, and asks what price they have set upon the "lot" so exposed for sale-at the same time stating .his own property and stand ing. If the parents ask too much, these gal lant " boys" make their own offer, which, if it does not suit the other to agree to, the fond 1 ver passes to seek some one else. We may suppose that the proud young men :lways keep a "top-eye" open to the corre -pondence of loveliness upon one hand, and the rize qf the dower upon the other. Atlasthe binds one for whom he is willing to give the price, and a loud clapping of the hands to i ether announces to the bystanders that the bargain is complete. 1 hat a heavy blow this mustbe for somelsty rival who has not decided quick enough,we is. halting and considering whether she will suit him, and whether she is as lovely and accom plished in household matters as some of the others. However, the deed is done and the bar !ain is completed, and forthwith the young girl. (poor thing) proceeds also to clasp the band of her futurehusband. What a moment. I inter est and anxiety to her! The destiny 01 iher life is sealed by this rude clasp of the hand. In this act she as much as says, " Yes, I will bh yours for life, and I consent to partake of your joys and your troubles, to follow you through weal and through woe!" The families of the betrothed pair then sur round them, offering their congratulations, aid, at once, without delay, the priest, who is on the ground for the occasion, pronounces the nuptial benediction. The young woman presses the parting hand of that family who have reared her, but of which she is no longer a part- mounts the car of her new husband, whom but a few hours before she never so much as knew, and escorted by her dower, is conducted to the house henceforward to be her home. The Hungarian Government have long tried, hut in vain, to suppress these fairs for young girls. Positive orders have been given, that they should no longer take place, but such is the force of long-established custom, united to the necessities of this pastoral race, that all such orders have been disregarded. The fair still continues, and every year such cavalcades as we have described may be seen descending into the plains of Kalinasa, there to barter off these precious jewels of the household, as though they were senseless beeves or mere produce of the soil.
