A communication from Francis Turner, on behalf of the Assessors, praying the Board of Aldermen to make an appropriation sufficient to pay their expenses, was, on motion of Mr. Burke, referred to the Finance Committee. A letter from Dr. W. Bertram, claiming a sum of ten dollars, due him by the late lst Municipal ity, for medical attendance, was, on motion, of Mr. Clarke, referred to the Committee on Claims, with power to act. A communication from James Jolls, Street Commissioner, recommending a plan of organiz ation for the Street Commissioners' Department, was, on motion of Mr. Burke, referred to the Committee on Streets and Landings. A communication from property holders on Canal street, between Rampart and Claiborne streets, opposed to the construction of the rail road lately adjudicated to L. Surgi, was, on motion of Mr. Clarke, referred to the Committee on Streets and Landings. Another, from property holders on Claiborne and Esplanade streetsand their immediate vi cinity, stating their opposition to the construc tion of a railroad in that portion of the city, was, on motion of Mr. Clarke, referred to the Committee on Streets and Landings. Two bills of the NewOrleans Commercial Bul letin, were, on motion of Mr. Clarke, referred to the Finance Committee. A communication from the Recorder of the First District was read, in which he alluded to his previous nomination of W. W. W. Wood and S. O'Leary as his clerks, and also stated that the business of his office was so large as to re lquire the duties of two clerks. (In motion, the number of clerks to be allowed to each of the Recorders was referred to the Po lice Committee. And that part of the above communication which has reference to the nomination of these clerks was laid on the table, subject to call. A letter on the same subject, from Recorder Genois, nominating Louis Bozonier and Joseph Jenois, Jr., as his clerks, was received, and on motion of Mr. Clarke, wasreferred to the Police Committee. A petition from Mrs. Mary Gray praying for relief was, on motion, laid on the table. Mr. Harris offered a memorial front Colotiel IHaynes praying relief for some tifty members oa the Cuba Expedition lately'returned from Spain, who, the memorial says, are in immediate need. -On the motion of Mr. Giquel to lay on the ta ble the above memorial, Messrs.- Burke, Converse, Giquel, Stockton, and Gasquet.voted yea. Messrs. Clark, Hisrris, Labatut, Lugenbuhl and Sewell voted nay. The Chair having voted in the negative the motion was lost. On motion of Mr. Sewell the memorial was then referred to the Finance Committee. On motion of Mr. Giquel, the vote to lay the petition of the Widow Gray was reconsidered, and the petition was referred to the Finance Committee.
