That paper says : The pavement is composed of circular boxes of cast iron, about twelvet inches in diameter and Le inches tin height, divided into six compartments, so ll1 as not to admit thehoofof a horse. In the present experiment, these spaces will be filled with gravel. but some ether subh stance, such as a composition of asphaltum and sad or grave, may be found more suitable. The surface of the pavement is grooved to prevent horses from slippiog, and on the outer edge oeeach box are keys which fit into the edges of the surrounding boxes, thus binding the whole firmly together. The thickneae of the outer rim and the inner divitiqns is about an inch. Thus the street wtll be covered with a network of iron. filled in with asubstanece to produce a smooth and durable earfete. MASQUERADE AT UNeION HALL.-A grand fancy dress and masked Soelety Ball, being the first of a series, was given on Wednesday evening at Union Hall in the 'ourth District. For sope time pat the event had been the topic of conversation among the beaux and belles of that rural district, and young men and misses had vexed their fancies in the invention of unique costumes, and taxed the purses of grave popas for the furnishli of ap propriate ornaments for the testive occasion. ENot a few ef the feminine gender had stinted their ordinary extratn gances in the consumption of ribbons and laces, bonnet and m bolns, in order to husband up the needful for the required outlay ; and many an aspiring Lothario, in sweet anticipation of the luxury of boots, fancy frills and stand int shirt collars, had forgone the indulgences of a cigars and cognac " through weary weeks. Tickets for the occasion had had wide circulation, ex tending from the oak groves that beautify the cottages in East and West Boullgny, through the rural suburbs of Jefferson City. famous for grazing, mutton and geese. down through the fasbionable precincts of Old Lafayette, even to the favorite dwelling places of"' Uppercruetdoma" along the margin of MIelpomene. The preparations for the event were oa an extended scale. the Union HIall being decorated for the reception of the numerous guests, musicians engaged, and a supper table spread out, crowded with every luaury. The guests began to congregate at an early hour, and by 11 o'clock the spacious room wa filled with as gay a party of light-bheeled revelers as ever gathered together to do nimble worship at the shrine of Terpsichore. The room was illed with msquern, masculine and femi nine, ancient and juvenal, dressed in every conceivable costume that has vexed the brains of inventive costumeors since the days when fig leaves were the only go, down to this present writing. There were Scotch Hlighlanders in Oaming tartan ; Venetians with forets of feathers ; ragged Patlandera aping Barney Williams; hIIamlets in "inky cloaks ;"' Duks and Duchesses, Gcnsdarme Genoerals, Yankees, Yahoos, Rolmao s and Riti-unso I The dances were conducted under the supervision of a I learned protfisor of the art, and were performed wit the greatest preeislon.
