Indeed, the rery plan of the road rises from a desire for :loser communication between this city and the fertile country which it is intendd to n.ake always aonessible to our merchants by r SthWgeas.. We have always been in favor of a Ie setem of railroads running from this city and 10 oonnecting'us more intimately and immediately ., 1th we 'atn be connected by water communi- a. cation, with the regions lying about us. The RedBiver road opens a section as fertile and c valuable as any other, and one which, in such C aeasons as that through which we have just passed, cannot be approached at all. Major Stith remarks in conclusion, that it is his in- p efijtlib.ito visit New Orleans during the winter 0 and urge this subject upon the attention of our r people, We shall be moeet happy to see him, to hear him and to learn of the success of the en- ;: terprise which he coemmend. hi W<H.ER ,NvYD B.USLVESS. The.:musieof the city-long delayed by low lwatosi` the rivers, by an unusual epidemico dur g3 J aummer and exaggerated reports of aideee early in the seaaon---has at length fairly commenced and made itself felt in every department. The rivers have risen and let out much of the produce which for so long a time lay emnbargoed. Trade has started and with the greater activity on account of its long dull nses. Boats are continually arriving crowded with passengere and continually departing load ed with freight. Money is beginning to get easier and colleotions are not so hard to make as tsey were three months or even three weeks ago. Thehotelsand boarding-houses are now fll, even to overflowing, and all places of muasemetit, operas, theatres and balls, are thronged with those who come to participate in the festivities of the season. Our streets are full, too, and the cabmen drive, not only good horses, but a very good business. We feel very sensibly this infusion of new blood into the arteries of our city existence and rejoice over it. We only regret that the weather for thepast week has not been of a kind to en courage much out-dooeer existence, and fully de monstrate that this is a sunny portion of the earth. In a few days, however, this cold and disaomfort will have departed and we shall re jeoieekt many frieads, much business and pleas ant wethey combined. There haBveben, ever since the epidemic of thelaet summer, a set of croakers, who refused to believedhat the city would ever recover from so severe ablow as that she then suffered; who imagined that the absence of trade was a con sequentof the fears engendered by the pesti lence andeould not be overcome. These indi viduals found new cause for their fears and lam entations in the cholera which visited us at the commencement of the season, and promptly pub lished the most alarming reports, Itis pleasant tobe able to refer them now to the last month's repert pf interments, and the last week's roc ordof'arrivals. There never were fewer deaths, acoording to the population, in any city in the Union; tnd the terror occasioned by the last pestilence has been fairly done away with and laid at rest. It is getting to be understood that,. with the exception of occasional severe vi - itations, New Orleans is as healthy a place as can be selected, and far pleasanter for residence than any other in the country. This belief is proved by the great numbers that flock here now notwithstanding all the rumors and reports that have been published concerning us and the fears incident to them. It is indisputable that trade has been muc ' less here during the present season than during its predeessors. But what have been the op portunities for trade, with the channel of every stream from here to the Ohio, fordaile by a boy? The waters are rising-the produce is a Waiting to be sent down-the orders are ready a to be tiled, and, unless we are seriously misled in our auguries, there will be between this and the first of May, as large and as brisk a trade ea wasee ever known in the same time. Pleasant weathes, wetrust, will be its accompaniment, for the last week's cold was almost unbearable. . ... . . MD - ,ý- Ron. L. A. aotvtlw, bt. G , Le our Llunlis fcr y u. ablep prr& -. NEWS OF 17_E CIT'Y I. ----- A, A UL ALAMITY. Burning of the Steamboat Georgia. TWENTY-SIX LIVES LOST!!--1200 BALES OF COTTON DESTROYED!!! At about the hour of eleven o'clock on Satur Sd.y night las, the teamer Georgia, Captain ainnott, oar ried at the wharf of the New Orleans, Oarrollton and Lake Pontehartrain Railrod, from Montgomery, Alabma, having on board upwards of one hundred and ifty passesn gors and a large number of slaves, with 1031 bales of eot. ton, together with a considerable quantity of other freight of various descriptions, altogether valued, boat and cargo, at about $100,000. She had scarcely touched the wbarf when an alarm of fire was given, and in a few minutes that portion of the vyeeel near the boilers was so com pletely envelopedln Oames as to render every exertion to save it abortive. The boat had already been attached to the wharf, and had the aerident occurred in the day time, while the passengers were awake, no lives would probably have been lost; but the greater number were asuleep in their berths, and only awoke when the boat wua wrapped in Hamer, to experie.ce, amid the alarm and oonfusion, all the horrors of death staring them in the face. and in come instanoes of having near relatives and friends in volved in the fearful catastrophe. Every effort we made by the captain and crew to check the fire. and prevent the losse of life, bat it had got fairly hold of the cotton and woodwork of the boat, and the tames sprang up with a heat and fury that nothing could withstand. In about ten minutes after the first alarm was given, the veos.l wa a macs of fire. and for those who had not already reached the wharf all hope of escape cut off. Sx white perone- Mr. John Jackon and child, of Alabama ; Mrs Jelly and daughter, of eoleaia; Mr. MoClenvthen. of Cincinnati; and a treman named Denals, are known to have perished, together with nineteen or twenty negroes. Mr. Comstoek the mate, informs us that he hurriod in to the ire-room when the alarm was given. and fo.oul bhe plaeein a perfect blaze and the heat so intense a to, Lrn der it impossible to enter. The hose used for purpt.,s ofeleoalineesand safety had been previously attached to the pumps, andthe cotton in the vicinity of the boilers had been kept constantly wet during the peerage; the smoke and ame, however, drove the men almostimmed ately fronmthe pempa and hese. and all hope to save the vessel being abandoned. no thought was left buto seek safety or save human life. Someleaped from the hurricane roof apon the wharf, others fell into the lake in the attempt, and may threw themselves overboard; children were thrown violently from the boat to the wharf-it being their only chance for life-and some of them were severely injured, one hav ing, we are told, it, scull fractured so badly as to render it recovery doubtful. Mr. McClenethen and a gentleman named IIubbard reehed out of the oabin on the side of the boat from the wharf; Hubbard ascended to the hurricane roof, and supposes his companion fell eoverboard in attempting to fellow him. as he was seen no mere. Mrs. Jolly attempted to leap to the wharf, but enruck against the planking, fell back into the lake and was drowned. The familly of Mr. Jackson consisted of himself. wife and nine children; he wee somewhat feeble in helth.and itis supposed perished in the fames, together with one child; Mr. Jaekbon and the remainder of the family escaped. Moet of the pas cengers were emigrants for Texas and other deetinatione and have by this disaster lost nearly everything they poesreemd. We are informed that a young lady, whose name was unknown to oar informant, is among the miss ing, and it is feared she will be added to the list of lost. The wharf took Ore and was burned for a distance of abeut one hundred yards, together with the Railroad Company', warehouae, four freight care, about two hun. dred bales of cotton just landed from the steamer Helen, and a quantity of bale rope and bagging, bringing the amount of loss up to quite a high fgure. We learn that the Georgia was almost a new boat and cost $28.500, two thirds of which losse was covered by insurance In some Northern office. The fre spread so rapidly, we are in formed by Mr. Ilanley, the elerk, that he had no time to save the books and papers of the boat nor the contents ot the safe, which eonsisted of money belonging to the boat and several large sum deposited by panengers. Deputy Coroner Terrell repaired to the scene of the disaster and remained during a great portion of the day. but we did not learn last night whether any bodies had been recovered.
