Historioally speu ing, this m`ay trite n or n b~we, Americans, so mot yas he Washington of Louise,ba e teprtnenti'e In thia picture, might be in good taste for thd ideal of a 'tecser, a Napoleon, or perhaps more strictly. speaking, of our fierce and eccentric Putnam,, on some of hie hair-breadth exploits; but, it is. moot certainly wanting in these characteristics lsively to Washingtonhe Again, the attitudeo of the horse upon which he is mounted, leapipg in the air, would be perhaps a happy represent ation of Bucephalus, and reminds one pomewliat of the attitude of the charger in David's picture of "Napolee crsesing the greet St.; Bernard." The firpt impresalon, of the figure ofWshn upon the mind is even painful-i ementhst the liberty the artist has takeno Inthu srepree senting him is almo satcrilegiour In extenuation of this is the fact that et tl moment which the artist haa seisedwas one of great excitement, and necessarily emhtdying great action. In fac, It has boen related that cans lketo see the "Father of his Countey" repreeentea. The figure of Gen. Lee is managed with great eartistic skill and truthfulneees and strikes me as byfarthe finest point in the picture. Mort- fled pride, unyielding stubbornness, and sup. pressed wrath, all are wonderfulldepieted in a countenance quailing under'thewztheringwrath of the iommander.in.Chief. Immediately behind Washington are Lafsy ette and Hamiltmn. These figues are wel in troducel; and the likeness of Lafayette setruk me as good, from esome representatiios.I have seen of him in early life. That of Hamilton I should consider more questionable. Occupying the centre of the picture, immedi-. ately in the foreground, is a pool of water, sur rounded by a herbage of a green so deep and bright as to presents striking contrast ith the. verdure in other portions of the picture; but this is not, perhaps, out of place, as the emoe ture might produce this effect in sulo a looai-y, even upon a day so oppressively sultry as that on which this battle occurred. A dog, ap parently panting with heat, has jumped into the water, and is luxuriating in its refreshing coolness; a very happy mode of giving an im pression of the intense heat of the day. On the left is the figure of a soldier, who has dropped in a state of exhaustion upon the green margin of the pool. His eye is fixed upon the water, his right hand extended towards it, as if vainly attempting to reach it; his left hand is claspedd around the arm of a hardy, sun-burnt "leaCther stocking" character, habited in the wild garb of a Western trapper. His strongly-sarked and weather-beaten face is turned, with an ,x pression of great. interest, towards the Com mander-in-Chief, forgetful of the two suffering objects who cling one upon either aide of him. The:grouping at the left is spirited,- and aIto gether well managed; and the mixture of races discernible in the physiognomies of the soldiers is fithful to historyin its representation. Per haps the meeost etciking figure in this portion of the picture, pnd one of the best in the whole number, is that of a hardy, sun-burnt soldier, with a face so charaoteristio that one can not doubt the likeness as a personification of the sturdy New England farmer. His hat is raised in his left-hand, his eyes are bent upon the Chief, and the expression of eager readiness to obey his orders seems beaeping from his countenance. His 'bristling gray hair, stern and time-wora features, his coarse apparel and general rustle appearanoo, with his brawny arms uncovered, presenting a striking contrast with the.patri clan costume, as well as general appearacnce, of a companion in arms who stands by his side. This young man is represented as'searcely past the period of edolescence; his delioately.ohisele4 features, light and graceful figure, as-well as rich cestume, indicating the descendant of the "Cav-eierS." Unlike as are these personages, they are doubtless trne to lIfe in a repreresentaeson of the patriots of the .merican Revoluti on.
