The re-union of parents and children in heaven, as well as of other friends, is a cheering and delightful thought. And the idea that our departed friends may so meties be near us, or wait to welcome us on tnborders of the spirit land, is well suited to impress the mind. A little girl in a family of my acquaintance- a lovely and precious child--lost her mother at an age too early to fix the loved fea tures in her remembrance. She was as frail as beautiful ; and as the bud of her heart unfolded, it seemed as if won by that me ther's prayers to turn instinctively heaven ward. The sweet, conscientious andi prayer. loving child was the cherished one of the be Sroeaved family. She would lie upon the lap of her friend, who took a mother's kind care of her, and winding one wasted arm around her neck, would say, "Now tell me about my mamma!" And when the oft-told tale had been repeated, she would ask softly, " take me into the parlor; I want to see my mamma." The request was never refused, and the affec tionate child would lie for hours contentedly gazing on her mother's portrait. But Pale and wan she grew, and weakly, Bearing all her pain so meekly, That to them she still grew dearer. As the trial hour grew nearer. The hour came at last, and weeping neighbors assembled to see the child die. The dow of death was already on the flower, as the life sun was going down. The little chest henaved faintly -opasmodically. "Do you know me, darling ?" tobbed close to her ear the voice that was dearest, but it awoke no answer. All at once a brightness, as if from the upper world, burst over the child's colorless ooun tenance. The eyelids flashed open, the lips parted, the wan cuddling hands flew up, in the ulittle one's last impulsive effort, as she looked lierciongly into the tar above. M' Mother ! "' sihe cried, with surprise and trans iort int her tone; and with that breath into her mothlr's bosson she passed. Colt's Revolvers. Col. Colt has applied to Congress for an ex- tii tension of his patent, and we are happy to see i that the counittee has reported favorably. After giving a m0inute history of the inven- It tion, running through more than twenty years, ec the committee say that they understand that of the object of the patent laws is to benefit the h community, by giving encouragement to men of u genius to devote their talents, and energies, and II time, to the public good; that part of the profits p of an invention which an inventor is to receive tl should bear some proportion to the entire value sa of his improvement; and the greater its value the more the public benefactor is entitled to. In dealing with these men, whose genius has rý benefitted the whole country and reflected honor e' upon her character and reputation, the country N can well afford to be liberal, both as a mark of w gratitude to them and encouragement to others. p In this particular case, according to the evi dence before the committee, Mr. Colt has devoted tl twenty-two years of his life to this invention. ri From the year 1831 until 1819 it appears that b not a dollar of profit had been realized out of r the improvement, but that more than #200,000 u had been actually lost. It appears that now t the inventor is in the midst of a successful effort t to bring his invention to perfection, and asks the privilege to accomplish this object himself. When that has been effected lie says he shall t need no further protection by means of a patent, p and will be able to defy all competition. No n one interfered with him or helped him for seven- v teen years, when his invention was con-idered v a failure; but now that the point of success has t just been passed, and the arm has proved to be 1 valuable, he complains that infringers stand C ready to ruin him before he has completed his v plans for their manufacture. Under the cir- i cumstances of the case, the committee think h Mr. Colt should be permitted to carry out his v invention to its ultimate perfection, and that no one would benefitted by throwing open the man- I ufaoture to competition, which would destroy the production of perfect arms, and fill the mar ket with spurious imitations. In this view of the case, therefore, the committee can not avoid I the conclusion that the public would be bene fitted by tih extension of the patent for seven t years; thus giving the inventor fourteen of the e exclusive enjoyment of his patent. The committee recommend the passage of the bill, reserving, however, the right of the Gov ernment to manufacture Colt's arms for their own use, in their own armories. Tue Moaxoxs.-The last Edinburgh Review contains a complete history of this corrupt com munity, from the origin of the gross imposture through its whole scandalous progress down to the present moment. It gives a fair view of the doctrines and the condition of the Mormons, and holds them up, by a plain statement of undenia ble facts, to the disgust and horror of the civil ized world. The Review states that more dupes have been made in England to this mischievous andt monstrous delusion than in all the world besides. Mentioning an authentic portrait of Joseph Smith-the Mahomet-the Review re marks: " Never did we see a face on which the hand of Hleaven had more legibly written ras cal." The face was. a faithful index of the clharacter. Astonishing as the growth of Mor monism seems even to those who never knew its founder, to those who did, it is so utterly as tounding that they have no words to express their wonder. If the reader will bring to his recollection the most thorough, irredeemable, acknowledged scamp of all his acquaintance, andi try to imagine such a man the successful head of a new religion, he will have some idea of the most boundless wonder of those who for merly knew Joe Smith, at the triumph of the imposture of the most notorious and graceless vagabond in all Western New York. - A Arn APLlsINS Tlsern.-In a recent trial be fore the United States District Court, Philadel phia. " Yes, sir, daddy planted the small kind." " Ah, but it appears to look rather yellow, too." " Yes, sir, daddy planted the yaller kind." John Van Buren is reported to have said that the Nebraska bill is the best bill that ever was passed by Congress, for that it will kill off every man from the free States who has voted for it, which he says will be " a consummation de voutly to be wished;" but, what is worse than this, it will kill off all Northern men who have hitherto stood by the rights of the South, in Congress and out of it, and all for a measure which is of no intrinsic advantage to the South; for I have always believed that if it gives any advantage as regards the slavery question it will be for the free States, and any injurious re sults, so far as that question is concerned, will fall on the slave States.
