A Bear Hunt in the Pyrenees. The following account of the tragical inci dents of a bear hunt in the Spanish Pyrenees is t translated from the Journal de Chasseurs : ! A companyof hunters, of Bagneros-de-Luchon t and its vicinity, was organized under the direc tion Mr. Thornm, the Mayor of Luchon, to under- t take the grand hunt that is made there every a year in Autumn. It was in the wild forests which lie adjacent to the little Spanish town of Venasque that this hunt took place this year. It was on Wednesday, the 5th of October, th at the little caravan, composed of nine or ten hunt ers, and a similar number of traqueurs, to beat up the game, put itself in motion. After hav ing crossed the harbor of Venasques, the party took the direction of the Baths, at which they had resolved to pitch their head-quarters. In front, on the opposite side, the Esquerro rises in a quarter known as the Litarota This place had been already indicated as affording excel- E lent chances for sport; the presence of bears < there had even been ascertained; a Spanish woodman had unexpectedly fallen in with one E of the denizens of these savage retreats; the bear, disturbed from his rest, seized him by the thigh with his terrible jaws, and tore him ter- E ribly. The poor woodman, as he narrated the e story himself, while showing his yet scarcely t healed wound, said he gave himself for lost; but the animal, whether from that repugnance I mingled with fear which inclines all lower crea- I tures to flee from man, spontaneously aban doned him, and quietly regained the depths of the forest. On Thursday morning the alcalde of Venas que, and three or four of the principal citizens of the town, paid the French the compliment of coming and joining them, and the field of hunt ers, taking advantage of the fine Autumnal morning, started; some to organize the battuer, and others to take possession of their posts. At the very entrance of the track the first bear was started. One of the traqueurs, named Oustalet, from Bagneres-de-Luchon, had the opportunity of shooting at him as he started, and almost close to the muzzle; but, whether the shot was deadly aimed, or whether the animal was only slightly wounded, he rapidly made off, and was not slow in disappearing in a direction opposite to that in which the hunters were posted. Inci dents which immediately supervened, however, did not allow of his track being followed. The battue was continued for some time with out leading to any results. The traqueurs, hav ing already gone over the whole of the ground assigned to them, had begun to despair of any sport for that day, when all of a sudden a bear of formidable size rose in the very middle of them. After having remained a long time im movable, in spite of the noise of all sorts which had been making around him, he at last decided on quitting his retreat. Shot at immediately by a Spanish traqueur, he was reached by a shot which went through his foot. His wound, too slight to arrest his progress, was, nevertho less, sufficiently telling to force him to descend to the less elevated regions of the mountains. The hunters, marshaled on the edge of a vast glade, saw him at a distance. Hunters and traqueours at once rushed down from the summit of the Esquerrero, and following the traces of blood, which served to guide them, they all soon found themselves met at the foot of a moun tain. It was evident that the bear, finding him self wounded, had sought refuge in some thick clumps of hazels, separated here and there by little glades, and bordering, by an abrupt de clivity, on the road to France and the torrent of Essera. Hlere another brush was to take place. The place, very much confined, was immediately surrounded by the hunters, and the agile tra queurs, with the intrepid Oustalet at their head, plunged into the thicket. A low growling soon revealed the presence of the bear. Pursued into his last asylum, and again started by a fresh shot which gave him another wound, he resumed his painful march. IIe was then seen, now making his appearance in the narrow glades which separated the hazel clumps, now violently forcing a passage for himself through the clumps interwoven with shrubs. Although hard pressed, the animal at bay, nevertheless, hesitated to show himself openly: tle seemed to dread the open spaces by which r lie was surrounded. Three times did Brain await the approach and fire of the traqueurs. O Two fresh shots reached him without bringing to him down. However, in another instant, forced to leave the thicket which had served to shelter *r him, he was about to become a mark for a dozen rifles pointed at him. Suddenly a shot was 8, heard, and immediately afterwards a cry of dis tress. A man was engaged in a struggle with the bear. The prudent distrust of the animal e, had compelled the traqueurso to follow him step by step. The indefatigable Oustalet had been the most ardent in this perilous pursuit. It was I, he who had first started the animal; it was he n who had first wounded him at this last start; le had scarcely lost sight of him a single in stnout, notwithstanding the infinite difficulties of od the ground. Unfortunately, carried away by his impetu ag ous enthusiasm, the courageous hunpr had slightly diverged from the track, and Fad pro ceeded a few steps too far, when suddenly he ax found himself in the presence of a bear, right opposite and below the redoubtable wounded vantasge of peeltios, the himself on the man, and otýeb* an irresistible shock. These melancholy sentiments last sir months; they are expressed by a black silk dress; the widow's cap is still worn. Fourth period-Time heals the wounds of the heart. Providce tempers the east wind to the shorn lamb. Violent attacks of grief only come on at rare intervals. Sometimes the widoe seems as though she had forgotten her less; but all at once a carcumstance, apparenmtly nl-iter ent, recalls it, and she falls bask into psi Yet she dwells from time to time uponthe tlts of the beloved; but it is only to contrsas that with his dazzling virtues. Fifth period-there is now only a softened Fifth period-there is now only a softened melancholy, which will last all her life, i. e., six weeks. This touching and graceful sentiment shows itself by a quiet gray silk dress; the suf ferer less feels the loss than the actual depriva tions of a husband. We should be doing the author an injustice if we omitted to give the beautiful passage with which he concludes the subject: As to those who really grieve over thier rela tions, they will do well not to annoy the world by the signs of a real grief; they will do well to wear their sorrows within, as they do when mourning over friends, those relations made by the heart. And, if you should meet with any such, do not address to them conventional con solations; for there is a portion of themselves which they have btried with their dead. Their only consolation is the hope that they shall never be able to console themselves; that is to say, never to forget; never to see those die in their heart whom they have already seen die in the flesh. Show these afflicted ones that they have not lost all, and show them your love is still left them. But all this is not the fashion. [Fraser's Magazine. ROIA vCE OF REAL LFE.--Mr. C--, as suming the name Jones some, years since pur chased a small piece of land, and built on it a neat house, on the edge of a common in.Wilt shire. Here he resided, unknowing and almost unknown by the neighborhood. Various con jectures were formed respecting this solitary and singular stranger; at length a clergyman took some notice of him, and occasionally invited him to his house; he found him possessed of intelli gence and manners, which evidently indicated his origin to have been in the higher walks of life. Returning one day from a visit at the clergyman's he passed the house of a farmer, at the door of which was the daughter employed at the washing tub. He looked at the girl a mo ment, and thus accosted her: " My girl, would you like to be married ?-be cause if you would, I will marry you." " Lord, sir! These are very strange questions from a man I never saw in my life before." " Very likely," replied Mr. Jones, " but,-how ever, I am serious, and will leave you till ten o'clock to-morrow to consider of it; I will then call on you again, and if I can get your father's consent, we will be married the following day." He kept his, appointment, and, meeting with the father, thus addressed him: "Sir, I have seen your daughter; I should like her for a wife, and I am come to ask your consent." " This proposal," answered the old man, "is very extraordinary from astranger. Pray, sir, who are you ? " " Sir, you have a right to ask these questions. My name is Jones; the new house on the edge of the common is mine, and, if itbe necessary, I can purchase your farm and half the neighbor hood," replied Mr. J. Another hour's conversation brought all par ties to one mind, and the friendly clergyman, afore-mentioned, united the happy pair. Three or four years they lived in this retirement and were blessed with two children. Mr. J. employ ed the greater part of his time in improving his wife's mind, but never disclosed his own origin. At length, upon taking a journey of pleasure with her, while remarking the beauties of the country, he noticed and named the different gentlemen's seats as they passed; coming to a magnificent one-" This my dear, is B- 's house, the seat of the Earl of E -, and if you please, we will go in and ask leave to look at it; it is an elegant house, and probably will amuse you," said he. The nobleman who possessed thismansionhad lately died. He once had a nephew, who, in the gayeties of his youth, had incurred some debts, on account of which he had retired from fash ionable life on about £200 per annum, and had not been heard of for some years. This nephew was the identical Mr. Jones, the hero of our story, who now took possession of the house, title, and estate, and is the present Earl of E. [Eng lish paper. AxERscA AHnot!-Sometime after the peace of 1814, a distinguished officer of the English navy visited the Constitution, then just new at Boston, for a Mediterranean cruise. He went through the ship accompanied by Capt. B of our service. o, Well, what do you think of her ?" asked the latter, after the two had gone through the vessel and reached the quarter-deck again. "She is a fine frigate, if not one of the finest frigates I ever put my foot on board of," re turned the Englishman, " but as I must have some fault, I'll say that your wheel is one of the clumsiest things I ever saw, and is unworthy of the vessel." Capt. - laughed, then explained the ap pearance of the wheel, saying : "When the Constitution took the Java, the former's wheel was shot out of her. The Java's wheel was fitted on the Constitution to steer with, and although we think it as ugly as you do, we keep it as a trophy."
