TR.soE -The grand jury of the United States for the District of Massachusetta have addressed a letter to President Pierce, in egard to the mode of treatment of certain per -as, arrested on the coast of Africa, on suspi Ion of having been concerned in the slave trade. They say: , During their present term they have inves hlgated sundry violations of the laws prohibiting the slave trade, and have found bills of indict ment againt the master, mate and - of the hbrjg Glamorgan. This vessel, which now lies at the Navy Yard in Charlestown under a libel for conlemnation, was seized on the coast of Africa, on the (5th of April last, by the United States armed brig Perry, Lieut. Richard Page com manding. " (On board the slaver were two Portuguese, who are shown by the evidence before us to have _sn the principal offenders. One of them was -e supercargo who had fitted out the vessel in / News York, and who is manifestly one of the il incipal agents in the slave trade carried on by tAmerican vessels with the Southern Afric;an coast The substance of these facts must have been known to Lieut. Page, yet, to our sur sris,, we find that, while he sent to the United dtartes the captain, first mate and three of the reew of the slaver, he released the supercargo and the second mate, who were the most guilty grsons.' ,ttovEL. Mott OF DUEFATItNG A DEAR -We ea e been told of the following extraordinary s pgoceto, and have been aosured that it is free quently practiced by the Russian tnii/as, or peasants, who can not easily procure fire-arms. t l The facts are exceedingly curious and inter- c esting : 'The hear, as every body is aware, has the greatest liking for honey. From a prodigious't distance he will track his way to the hollow tree where the will bees have hived. Once arrived, Le pokes his long mouth into the hole, and with ntarvelous dexterity licks tp, even to the last little cell, the produce of the industrious and ijndlfnotigable swarms which, for a whole season, ae bheen laying all the herbs and flowers of the ferest under contribution. lie cares nothing for the ,tings of the despairing defentlers. is skin, f;r the sake of which man hunts him, is her'- not the source of his danger, but the means of I lprotection. ]in a forest known to contain bears, th" hunters ealrtine all the hollow trees till they discover a will bee-hive. A branch of the tree is then eht-en directly above the hole; if there is no tsuih branch, a stout peg is driven into the trunk To this peg a strong cord is fastened, Santd to the end of the cord a heavy stone, or a Scnnaorn-hall, is securely suspenlded at about hlalf a foot from the ground. The bear, in his re searches, comes upon the treasure of honey: the penduluts lharrier obstructs and incommiodes Jhim a good deal. tIe is an irritable brute; in each cases, one of the rlost irritable as well as o neit i tihe most stupid in the forest. Ile begins l, -lshoving the stone or weighit aside; but it te.tos against his letad. and he gives it a slight klnosk to free himself fronm the inconvenience. It r'coila in a moment, antl he receives a smart t tit on the ear. hIls temlpr is rtou-ed, and Ihe tgl:iin pui-he off the hard and heavy Ilas, but limore violently; he gets a rather severe tlow on the side of his skull on its return lie bectomes tarious, andl with a powerful jerk sends the rock f -winging away The pendulum can not he the lirat to tire of this game; and it is ta game in P wiiilth all the blows are felt on one side exclu sively. Te he nr alone suffers; and the potint i<, that ie suffers as much by the stroke he gives as Iy those he gets-he t:kes dtothle ,pun inhment Ills very retaliations are all against limsell'; antd for every furious puah whiicih imakes his skull ache, he is sure to receive an im mediite e quivalent which makes it ache again. At last his rage is unbtounled ; lie hugs the b)ock, he strikes it, he bites it; hut whenever 1.o would thrust his head in the hive, back on his ear falls the obstruction, against whichl neither his terrible Ihug nor the Ilows of his lpw are of iany avail The brute is maddened. lie facIs his strange and pertinncious tormentor, and makes it once more rebound from his skull. But back it swings, like a curse, which returns iulon the head from which it started. The bear falls exhausted under these reiterated blows, one more violent than another; ani if he he not idead, the hunters, who have watched the sin gular contest frotm their ihiding-places, soon dis patch him. tsV-R11Oll10111 CIRh-lt lY V\IEGAR.--A letter from Venice says : " Were you here, you would be much pleased with the discovery made at Udine, the capital of Fiuli, a small province be " longing to this republic. The discovery is this: A poor man, lying under the frightful tortures ·of the hydrophobia, was cured by draughts of vinegar, given him by mistake instead of an other potion. IBoxes in the shape of iprescenta are con t,iderably below par inl that city. ' '",CT LoosE a-ijot, Drlic stL!"-A rieond of! ours, who is a most ancomplished salestman, and who is kept very buahy in one of the upt town dry-goods houses, was complimented not long since in a manner and form als follows, to wit : lie had a countrynman inl the store, and was showing hlim :i very handsome piece of ladies' dress goods, not with any great hope of selling it; still, there was some slight chance, and, be sides, it is necessary (-o our friel avers) to keep constantly in practice. So lie dashed ahead in fine style. praised the richness of the pattern, extolled the texture of the ftbric, held it up to a favorable light, avaeched tobr its ult:ra o fashionableness; and, in short, let loose a tor rent of eloquence, h n which it wto diflicult to dtstiguishl which w.al" imtore flattercd, the taste of thl: admiring rustic, ,r the quatlity of the magnificont notustait uite. ltumnpkin's eye flashed with gratified pride at the compihmentary allu sions to himself, and unconcealed astonishment at the development of beauty in the goods and fluency in the salesman. Catching our friend by the arm, he exclaimed: "Stop right here one minute!" and dashed out of the store with two or three rapid bounds. Grosdenap stood, a little bothered, holding the bolt of goods across both hands, just as though he had "frozen" in the attitude in which he had so thoroughly im pressed the rural gentleman. lMean time, this last mentioned individual whisked two bouncing girls out of a carry-all which stood in front of the store, and, half pulling, half pushing them, brought them up in front of him of the fluent tongue : "Gals! stand there-right there, Sal ly-and 0ow, .Mister, cut loose again! I just want the gals to hear you!" It is almost needless to say, in view of the peculiarity of the circumstances, that our friend was utterly overwhelmed with his emotions, and for once in his life failed in his utterance, to the great disappointment of the father and both daughters. [Montgomery (Ala.) Mail. PATENT AUSAGost -BoyB are great wage, and some of them very wicked ones, too. We laughed F consumedly over an anecdote which has just been related to us, in which the latter class of g, "boy-wags" played a conspicuous part. Down in Frankfort street, hard by to William, lives a d Duch pork-seller and sausage-maker. Some c rude boys in that neighborhood had annoyed him with inquiries as to the material of which his "links" were composed, and he had trounced a one of them rather roughly for his impertinence. 4 The "whirligig of time," however, soon brought about their revenge. They went down early b one morning into "The swamp," and collected 1 a long string of the huge rats which infest the stores of that sunken neighborhood; and while u two or three boys, by dint of joke and taunt, seduced the butcher to pursue them down the ; street, another entered the shop and hung up the string of rats on the rail in the show-win dow, between the tempting festoons of the savory sausages. By-and-by people began to stop be fore his shop and stare into his window; then roar out laughing and pass on. Presently a large crowd collected, and the butcher came out to ascertain what it was that attracted their curiosity. "Is that the kind of stuff you make sausages of?" asked one, pointing to a string of rats. " Cot any rat steaks ?" inquired another "Send me over a rat spare-rib," added a third, until the man, livid with rage, shut his door upon the crowd, removed the incumbrance from his window, sat him down and wept, like a big Dutch baby, as he was. CrRIOUS RaAILROnAD IS Pe I'rsr. --One of the most interesting sights in Paris, and one that no American ever thinks of visiting, as he pro. bably never heard of it, is the railroad from the Barrier d'Enfer to Scea:ux. It is but seven miles long, and was built as an experiment upon a new s} stem of wheels. The engine, tender and hindermost car of the train are fur crshed with oblique wheels, under the ordinary upright ones. Where the tradle is straight, these do not touch the rails ; but at the curves they come into play, rattling along the inner e Ige of the rails, and preventing the train from running off the track. The road was there fore made purposely tortuous, and the most sudden and seemingly dangerous bends were introduced at frequent intervals. The two stoations are circular, and the train, as it re ceives its passengers, is doubled up into a ring of fifty feet radius. The smallest curve upon the road is sixty-eight feet radius, and over this the train goes at full speed. The corners of the car- are cut off, so that the vehicles, in following tihe curves, do not infringe upon each other. Screaux is upon an eminence, which the road ascends spirally, with something like a mile of track, it only going in advance a hun dred feet. The invention---which, by the way, is ten years oll-has proved practically very Ssuceessful, but it has never been applied to any I extent. CtLR;rtAL, .JsnOS -Murray's " IIandbook for South Italy' is just published, and contains soune curious stories respecting Fra Rocco, the celebrated Dtminician preacher, and the spirit ual Joe Miller, of Naples. On one occasion, it is related, he preached on the mole a peniten tial sermon, and introduced so mnny illustra tions of terror that lie soon brought his hearers to their knees 1\\'ile they were thus showing every sign of contrition, he cried out, " Now all of you who sincerely repent of your sins, hold up, your hands!" Erey man in the vast multitude immedia:tely stretched out both his hands. " hIoly Archangel Michael," exclaimed Rlocco, " thou who withll thy adamantine sword standest at the right of the judgment seat of God, hew me off every hand which has been raised hypocritically." In an instant every Ian'd dropped, and Rocco, of course, poured aforth a fresh torrent of eloquent invective :gainst their sins and deceit. IIe had a great ditrlhke to tobacco, and when once preaching to Scrowd1 of Spanish sailors, le astounded them by telling them that there were no Spanirh I saints in heaven. A few, he said, had been ad mitted, but they smolted eo many cigars that s they .made the IHoly Virgin sick, and Sr. Peter set his wits to work to get them out. At length Ite proclaimed that a bull fight was to be hell outside the gate of Paradise. Thereupon every Spanish saint, withou, exception, ran off to see the fight, and St. Peter immediately closed the gate and took care never to admit another Sptluiard. [N. Y. Evening Pest. Bishop 3urnet, once preaching before Charles II, was much warmed by his subject, ant, uttering a religious truth in a very earnest ttanner, with great vehemence struck his clenched hand upon the desl, and cried out: " Who dares dl";v this ?" " Iaith," obscv o ed the King, in a key not quite so lontu as the preaciher, "no body, 1 i.,uttl think, that is withii reach of that great list of yours." The antiv Hill Hlerald gives, as a reason for " hating a young, beaiutiful, and accomplished girl," that she bakes strawberry shortcake at teast twice a week, and always places it to cool in a window so temptingly near his window as to sharpen his appetite, and yet so far off that he cannot reach it!
