PROBABhE AnIREtT o. ARRISON.-The Var saw (Ill.) Express, of late date, says: "'u " On Sunday afternoon last a man landed Ygom the packet at this place and inquired the nay to the residence of Mrs. Ward, in the t-untry. One of our citizens gave the direc (ton, buhot it seems he mistook the road, and fght coming on, he put up at the house of Mr. A. Robinson, who resided about six miles from tis place. At the breakfast table next morning, Mr. Robinson Squired of his guest if he was in Cincinnati at house, a party arrived at the house of Mr. Robinson, who were in pursuit of the same individual. Mr. It. directed the officers to the residence of Mrs. Ward, which direction the fugitive had taken. In a short time after the party returned, having the bird secured. He was taken to Keokuk, and is now probably on his way to Cincinnati." - A correspondent of the St. Louis fptelligencer gives the following description of the nlurfer er's person : ' " From an acquaintance of some ten year's with young Arrison I will attempt a deseription of him, which you may use a: you think proper. Wm. H. Arrison is about fivesfeet ten inches high, rather square rigged, evincing in his every merement nerve and action. His hair is black, soft and glistening; piereing black, moving and disturbed eyes, though hidden by long and heavy lashes; nose, properly speaking, a Roman, without undue prominence; high cheek bones, thin lips, and a splendid set of teeth, the incisors or front teeth slightly pro jecting He walks as though one lee was a little shorter than the other, or the difference may be caused by the habit of placing the right foot down firmly, at the same time turning the toes out. There is an impression on my mind that his name, or the initials at least, are tat tooed on his right arm. His age is thirty, or thereabouts." DEATH FROM LIoRTNINo.-During the severe rain and thunder storm, about 2 o'clock last Friday afternoon, several persons sought shelter under the tank of the seven mile pump, which is so designated for the reason that it is situated that distance from Charleston, on the South Carolina Railroad. Our informant states that the electric fluid first struck the top of the tank, without doing it any material injury, and then glanced to Mr Alexander Williams, whom it killed instantaneously, at the same time pros trating and severely injuring Mr. David Traxler and slightly injuringlMr. Neale. Mr Traxler's horse, which was also under the same shelter, was instantly killed. [Charleston Standard, 81st. The Clayton (Ala.) Banner, of the 29th ult., says: Three weeks ago the prospect for making the greatest abundance of corn was never better in this county. It was regarded with the certain ty almost of a "fixed fact," that we were to re vel in the greatest plenty; indeed, some con tracts were made in this vicinity tofurnish corn on the 1st of January next at 60 cents per bushel. But the recent dry weather, together with the unuonal heat, has seriously damaged the crops, and we fear, unless good rains speed. ily fall, this section will suffer next year, as this, on account of the scarcity wherewith to make " bread, the staff of life." Cotton is doing well, and promises to be exceedingly pro ductive. , Since the above was in type, we had a good season in this vicinity, and hope it has been a general thing. Notwithstanding the present season has been the warmest we remember ever to have experi enced, we believe that the health of our State generally will compare most favorably with any previous year. Fur the past week, our immedi ate section has been visited with delightful showers and an unusual quantity of lightning, which have had the effect to purify and cool the atmosphere, so that we breathe comparatively free again. Accounts from all quarters, since the late rains, show a decided improvement in the state of the crops, giving promise of at least an aver age yield both of corn and cotton, the latter being thus far measurably free from the dis asters to which it is ordinarily subject. [South ern exchange. The Madison (La.) Journal, of the 28th ult., says: a The heavy rain which fell on Wednesday eve ning throughout the greater portion of our ra rish will greatly benefit the growing cotton, much of which was suffering from drougth. ANOTHER DEATH FROM BUKNING FL.um.-lHan nah, daughter of Parker Clay, died in Dover, N. H.. a few days since, in consequence of hav ing been burned by burning fluid She was pouring some fluid from a can upon some chips with which she was making a fire, supposing that there was no fire in the ashes in the stove. An explosion took place, which burned her so severely that she died in consequence. Of the Bishop of London a tolerable story is afloat. Wanting some alterations done in the palace at Fulham, he employed a first-rate ar chitect to inspect the building, and consult as to what was needed to be done. The business oc cupied the latter three or four hours, and the Bishop, on the report of the expense, determined not to proceed. lie said, however, " Be good enough to tell me for how much I shall draw a check on account of the troubleyou have taken." " I thank your Lordship," was the reply, " a hundred guineas." "A hundred guineas!" "Yes, my Lord." " Why, many of our curates do not receive so much for a whole year's ser vices." " Very true, my Lord, but I am a Bish op in my profession!" The check was drawn and handed over in silence; but the Bishop sighed at the thought how a mitred architect could charge the clergy. IMPROVEMENT OF RAILROAD TItVEL.- Mr. Meigs, of New York, in an elaborate paper on railways, a subject with which he is well ac quainted, having made it a study since 1818, when he predicted in the New York Legislature, as he did two years before, in a newspaper, that they would be traveled at an average speed of fifteen males an hour, says that the Emperor of Russia has taken the first great step towards the ultimatum of railroad travel. Instead of cutting a mere drill through the country, and going around every thing in the way of a straight line, he has cut a broad way of five hundred miles, from St. Petersburg to Moscow. lie had made it all the way two hundred feet wide, so that the engineer sees every thing that comes on the road. Such is part of the future. The railroad from point to point with a math ematical line. The rails ten times stronger than are now used, the locomotive on wheels of far greater diameter, the gauge of a relative breadth, the signals and time perfectly settled; the roads on both sides, during the transit of trains, having the gates of the walls all closed, then, instead of traveling one hundred miles an hour, we shall more safely travel three hundred miles an hour. That now seems fast enough, as did twenty a few yeare ago, and we are now on very unsafe rails on some straight runs, treated to sixty miles on hour in this country, and in England to one hundred. GrOt oF BoTn.t.--There is not an inch of the Gulf of Bothnia but we have crossed over; it is a strange place; the effect of the irregular refraction is very singular; the other morning we saw a light-house up in the air, and on looking "at the chart, it was proved to be fully fifty or sixty miles otf. Ships appear, when you are neo;.ly a day's sail from them, now with three hulls, now without sails, in a moment with a cloud of canvass, now turned upside down, and half a dozen ships are over the other, all as large as the biggest three decker; when you come up with her she is some insignificant little coester. We are within a couple of degrees of the Arctic cirole; the sun does not set until ten, p. m. and he rises about two ; we have broad day light all the time he is below the horizon. We are going on to the head of the gulf, and when we do we shall see the sun at midnight. [Letter from the Napier fleet. PREDESTINATION.-" Do you believe in predes tination?" said the captain of a Mississippi steamer to a clergyman who happened to be traveling with him. " Of course I do." " And you albo believe that what is to be will be ?" " Certainly." "Well, I am glad to hear it." "Why?" " Because I intend to pass that boat ahead in lifteen consecutive minutes, if there be any vir tue m pine knots and loaded safety valves. So don't be alarmed, for if the boiler ain't to burst, then it won't." Here the divine began to put on his hat, and looked very much like backing out, which the captain observing, said: " I thought you said you believei in predes tination, and what is to be will be." " So I do, but I prefer being a little nearer the stern when it takes place.' of the deed was drawing near. Tork Express has the following on this sub ject : UncleSam seems to have become the greatest land speculator in all Christendom. He began buying up "lots" from an European ownership as soon after the revolutionary war as he was able to look around or had any money to spare. Louisiana and Florida were the first results of such speculations; but these were mere trifles compared with subsequent operations, and operations that appear to be now in contem plation. A tew years since we paid out of our national treasury a handsome sum on account of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, whereby we per- t fected our title to certain lands ceded to us by Mexico. And it was only the other day that we paid out seven of ten millions more for an inde finite strip of territory belonging to the same country. And now we are told that no lees a personage than the Emperor of all the Russias is in the market with Sitka, if not the rest of his territorial possessions on the Northern Pa cific. Being in want of funds to carry on the war against Turkey and the Western Powers, we are assured he will sell cheap, and that it is our manifest interest, if not our manifest des tiny, to buy. Bitka, doubtless, would be a valuable acqui sition, if for nothing else, its supply of ice, and as a stopping place for our whaling vessels in that black region; but before we buy, perhaps, it were advisable to ascertain whether our good friend Nicholas is owner of Sitka, or any other portion of the territory over which he has had sway in that quarter. It is well known that at last accounts from the Sandwich Islands, a British squadron was on its way thither, expressly with a view of taking possession there, and, by this time, we have but little doubt the place has a British lag flying over it instead of a Russian one. It is not long since that the British Government offi cially notified our Government of its determina tion to blockade those coasts and to proceed against them in all other respects as Russian territory ; in plain, indiplomatic English, that John Bull intended to get possession of, and oc cupy that territory if he could; and, more over, that he intended to have that determina tion especially known at Washington. A gentleman was once negotiating with a New Hampshire horse-dealer for the purchase of a mare, but could not agree by ten dollars. Next morning, however, making up his mind to split the difference, he posted off to the stable, when the first person he met was the groom, " Master up, Joe ?" he inquired. " No, master be dead," said Joe, " but he left word for you to have the mare " Yankees never lose a trade. NEW ORLEANS MARKETS. Canra.r, OFFICr. Saturday Morning.
