[Helena (Ark.) Shield, th,. FATAL AcCIDENT.-Man Drowned.-On the so afternoon of the 6th inst., says the Charleston Standard, two men started from the foot of the Union wharf in a small row boat, on a pleasure 51 excursion, which we are sorry to state did not r, turn out as such, as it resulted in the death of to one of the party, Mr. Michael Mainon. The 9 particulars are nearly as follows: When about f5 opposite Palmetto wharf, and not more than 01 two hundred yards from shore, Mr. Matnon's a oar slipped from his hands into the water, and 0 in trying to regain it he lost his balance and 1 fell overboard. The current was very rapid, and when he rose to the top of the water he was some distance from the boat. Mr. M. struggled 8 for some time to gain the floating oar which 4 was only a few yards from him, but being an inexpert swimmer, was unable to do so. The , scene was witnessed by several persons from the shore, among whom was his wife, who im mediately dispatched a lost to his assistance, but before reaching the place of disaster, Mr. e M. sank to rise no more. Exertion was made to recover the body, but without effect. De. ceased was about twenty-eight years of ago, o and a shipsmith in the employ of Mr. Johnston. Ii He leaves a wife and two children. THE CHooMA.-A letter from St. Thomas, under date of 17th July, says: Every com- d munication from Barbadoes swells the dreadful t statistics of the ravages of the cholera in that I Island. The last steamer brings accounts that ithad subsided somewhat in towno, lbut was doing t its work,at so awful rate in the other parts of the Island; fifteen thousand also have died in Grenada. At Blackwell's Island, above New York city, the cholera has prevailed to a considerable ex tent. Two deaths a day, on an average have occurred at the Lunatic Asylum since it broke out on the Island, and about as many at the Alms-house, where it originated. At Chicago, on the 20th ult., twenty deaths. At Troy, N. Y., on Wednesday, two deaths. At Albany, on the same day, five deaths. At Detroit, Michigan, on the 29th nit., twenty nine deaths. At Boston, during the twenty-four hours end ing at noon on Wednesday, there were four fatal The interments at St. Louis for the week ending on the 31st slt., numbered two hundred and thirty-two, of which forty-nine were from cholera. The cholera has become nearly extinct in Newark, N. J. Within the twenty-fours hours but one case had been reported The cholera returns in New York show a de cline in the ravages of the malady. The mortality at Lamar's Stage Station, fifteen miles east of Chicago, has been frightful. Nine members of a single family died of cholera a few days since. BARBnnITY 137 VENEZcEt.A.-The New York Express publishes the following, under date of Caraccas, July 6th: " The wife of Senor Pinto, one of those who have recently risen in rebellion against Mona gas, had been whipped, in order to compel her to confess where her husband is, and with such severity that the wretched lady died the fol. lowing day." It is a recapitulation of all the existing post routes in the United States, to which some six or sevenhundred new ones are added. A REMARKABLE CIRCtMSTANCE. - A man named Ryther, a foreman in Messrs. Starks & Pruyn's Iron Works, in this city, was attacked yesterday morning with the prevailing sickness, and notwithstanding the prompt attendanae of a physician, he sank very fost, and died early in the evening. The physician called in the evening for the seventh time, and found the body prepared for the grave. While standing by the corpse, the physician thought he detected a movement in one of the hands of the deceased, and on looking closer, two or three of the fingers moved distinctly. Those standing by also no ticed these movements of the fingers, as also that of the muscles of the arm. The physician then remarked that the sense of hearing was always the last which left the body, and he would soon ascertain if the man was still alive. He then took one of his hands in his own, and said, " Ryther, if you can hear me and cannot speak, answer by pressing my hand." This was promptly responded to by a very distinct pressure, felt by the physician, and seen by others, and it was repeated. Resmuscitation, however, was of course impossible. [Albany Atlas, 3d.
