At least, allttle inoident that transpired in Canal street on Tuesday evening. seem to indicate as much. A little after veran o'clockt on that evening. a respeotable lookinog lady of aboutthlrty.firve, elad in deep mourning, and corryieg a gilt-edged prnyer-book in her hand, entered the shoe store of Mr. Carpietto, atthe orneor of Canal and Dorelere streets, and in a very polite manner intimated that she wished to have her underetanding encased in nw leather-a few pales of something neat but not gaudy -say plain leatsher, worth ahot a dollar anda halfa p.ir. Mr. Carpiette handed out a large trunk and raised the lid. The lady, altear examling the shoer that were in the trnet, picked out sin pairs of a certain number, and laid them aside. She asked Mr. C. to make out his btll Sayig tha, she would send for the ehoeo on the followlig day. Mr. C. went back to make out the bill as requested. and whil e was engaged at the desk, the lady stooped over tha trounk and. under a pretence of examinIng the shoes for pastime, slipped a pair under her arm, beneath her ,shawl. Uofortunately for her, the act was witnessed by the workman of the store, who was standing at a little distance behind her; and in her haste she had thrust the /shoes so far under her arm that they eauoed her shawl to elick out behind. The workman tipped the wink to the os. as the latter rame forward with his bill. The lady tpeeived the hill composedly, picked up her prayer-book d turned to leaver, Mr. C. and hie man following her. hen rhe got as far as the door, Mr. C. tapped her on he shoulder, nod as she turord, esid, "Enouse me, Mad ame. hut havn:a't you got something that don't belong to you?" at the same time puttiog his hand beneath her ohawl and drawoing forth the shoes. The lady became terribly frightened, and then suppli atory. '"Ohplease etr,' she eaid, "-On't you give me the shoes-I want a pair very bad, and I've got no money.' Mr. C. replied politely that the times were too hard to give awnay shoes to any stranger that might come along. The lady then begged for liberty without the thoer. Mt. C. oould'nt think of that, either. She then told him that she was a lady of respectability. and that if he would send some person along with her, nhe oould pay for the shoes. Mr. C. blandly replied that that was not his wayof doing business ; and alut then the poliseman of the beat came along. Tothis functionary te. C. eon signed the lady in black on a chaorge of larceny; and she ewas taiken off to the calaboose, crying liken child. Yesterday morning, on being conutrooted with Recoorder Rmos, the lady wept bitterly, and showed that she felt ternelfto be In a terrible predicament. She told who and what she was, and the Recorder and the ofaers and cpeotators were not a little surprised. Mr. Carplette, findinog ont who she wars, asked leave to withdraw his -ffi darit; but the Recorder, who was not long since exten. ively censured for showiog clemency to a respectable o.fonder, and probably had his feelings in the matter, would not listen to such a thing. He notlfiod the lady that ehe must either furnish ball of 5300 to ap peor for examination when notiied, or go to prison. A gentiemaun stepped forward and stood her security, and then she llt, evidently In the deepest humiliation. A regard for the feelings of the lady and her friend., particularly as no good would be accomplished thereby, prers.nt us from girvng the name. THE DEAF AD Dopo FIRom. N.--Ofthfe w who t have recently proved themselves firemen to the back. bone-lanother words, those of the old volunteer firemen, t who have continued to battle their anlent enemy since the withdrawal of the old organisation from active ser- f vioe-o-t givrese pleasure to place in the front rank, our old friend, and every body's friend, M. D. Phillips, Esq, familiarly known to a large portion of the community as SDnummy." It is well known that Dummy never spoke a word, nor heard a sound. In all his life ; yet he is the model fireman of the city, having been a member of Vol nateer tompany No. 1, for twenty-os years, and s veery punctual a member, too, that in the last rs year, heI has missed attendance at only three fires! Dummy has long been an esxempt fireman; but the honor has only been a nominal one-he never once availed hlmself of its privileges. Dummy was a volunteer when the old organization hung their harps on the wil- I love-or rather left their machines beneath the syas mores in Lafayette quare-an week or two since, but that was nothing to Dummy. Dummy very naturally said nothing, and went about his other duties, without be traying a particle of excitement ; but when the fire bhroke I out on last Sttunday night, Dummy expreseed his neoti- I meets in a very unmlistakable manner. lie was among the first on the ground; and held th epipe for one of the fret streamsplayed upon the blazing buildings. His service was material, too, for the engines were in the hands of inex perienced amateurs, who made slow work in comparison with the old volunteers who stood jeering around. Dom. my, however, on that oeosion, had one enviable advan tage : he did not hear the shouts, groans, and epithets, 1 that so seriously worried his patriotic co-laboree. At the fire of Wednesday, Dummy was of course on hand. The fact is, that Dummy is an out-and-out fireman--a fireman upon the abstract merits of Water erresu Fire. All side issues-such as disputes about first water, time on the road; supremacy to other companies, denuneiation of the Young America, pecuniary dlfficullties, squabbles with the corporation, and other ezeltemuents, which are as meat and drink to the great mass of firemen-are but chatff to Dummy. Should he take the trouble to go into these things with his little slate, and get at the bottom of them all, he would doubtless write in reply what Cold. stream would say--'nothing In it.? Some may ask, how can adeaf and dumb man like Dummy be so excellent a fireman. We answer, n the fret place, that he is o striring illustratlion of that kind ordering of Providence. which atones for the liss of some senses in a human beiong by the quickening of those senses which remain. Dummy haes naturallya a ctive, acute1 Intellect; in his youth, language. as written and read, wasne inlstilled into his mind by a laborious process, and he is now master of it for all practical purposes. iIi, viesion is so extraordinarily acute and all-embraecng, that, aided by the intuitlive quickness of his brain, be comprehends superficial matters in one-fourtth the time that ordinary mortars do, with all the advantages of speech and hearinog ConeeqeroPtiy, Dummy soo an alarm r fireh before a great many hear it-that is, In the day time, cr before he goes to bed. If he be asleep, the mother and sisters that he supports and protects, arouse him at the first tap of the bell; not that they are partoicularly interested in putting out fires. but because Dummy has a little temper in the matter of missing fires, and is altogether too good a son and brother to be cheated out of his darling excitement. It is curious how Dummy can bhe so good a fireman, and neavr hear auythiog' or have anything to ay; but it is still more curious to know how he gets along in other ca pacities, in which, to everybody else, so.ed is the most essential requisite. Who would think, in admiring the maeureve of that gallant company, the Horee-Guards, that the man who sits most erect in his saddle-manages his steed with most grace-nor ever makes a baulk of any kind, in that exercise which others tid it so hard to master-is our deaf and dumb friend. Dummy? Yet it is ecso. If you should ever by any mischance get into the eirst District lock-up, and should learn that the smiling turnkey was deaf and dumb, youa would instinotively sap pose your chances of escape to be better than under ano. ther turnkey, would'nt you? You would be awfnully mis. takena, though; for Dummy's eyes are better than forty pairs of ordinary ears. A prisoner never yet gave him the slip. And if you should go to a firemen's ball, and notice a prim. gallant looking follow, smiling and towing to the ladies, and apparently talking-gliding with them through the mazy quadrills, or whirling in the giddy waltz, with all the grsace and accuracy of the most finshed votary of Terpsichore-you would be surprised, would'nt you, if you should see some one fire a pistol behind him, and see him pay no attention to it? Yet Dummy at a ballis tjust what we hare delineated-and is actually so deaf, that he cannot hear the firing of apistol at his ear! Dummy is altogether a great institution-a town fte lure. iHe has been sketched frequently before; but we think that should sot prevent him from being referred to occasionally, as the years rOl on.
