Lbrnom L.CTURnS-.It should be borne in mind
by all who have attended the preceding lectures of
Dr. B. A. Gould, thatfhe delivers another this evening,
at the Lyceum Hall, in continuation of those which
have preceded it.
The history of the discovery of the planet Neptune
--first found, we believe, by La Veonrier, although
calculated by other astronomers previously-will be
the subject of the discourse, and should be deemed,
as it assuredly is; of sufficient importance to induce
all lovers of science to attend. Tickets can be pro
cured as before.
Mn. COLLINS' BNEP'rr.-The performances at the
St:.Charles Theater this evening, are for the benefit
of Mr. Collins; a gentleman whose varied and able
personations during the time he has been with us,
ha4e won for him a large amount of well-deserved
popularity. He has evidently endeavored, by study
and observation, to render his acting accordant to the
idiosyncrasies of the characters presented, and to
give a full and round embodiment of their natnres
the angles and salient points which distinguish one
mnan from another, and to show how, under certain
circumstances, each one would act and be acted upon.
We trust that that our citizens will turn out in sufficient
numbers to render the occasion aspecuniarily profita
ble to the beneficiary, as he will render it pleasantly
agreeable to those attending.
mruAlTeaY COLL&~ E, LOUIsSlCA.-We acknowl
edge the receipt of a polite invitation from the faculty
of CentenaryCollege, through Mr. Anthony Sambola,
to attend the regular exhibition of the Junior class
and the literary societies, which will take place on the
6th and 7th of the present month. We much regret
our inability to attend, as we feel assured the exercises
will be entertaining and instructive.
Weare glad to know the College is in a flourishing
condition, and that its prospects were never more fa
vorable. We regard it as one of the best institutions
in the South, and entirely worthy general patronage
and countenance. At the present time the number of
students is two hundred and nineteen, and additions
to that number are being made from day to day.
We earnestly hope the institution may enjoy a long
career of honor, usefulness and prosperity.
GAITrY Tnr E.-%he benefit of Mr. Fred. N.
Thayer, Acting Manager of the Gaiety Theater, oc
curred last evening, and drew, as every one expected,
a crowded and fashionable audience. It was one of
the most brilliant nights of the season.
'The entertainments commenced with Bulwer's
beautiful comedy called " Money," with an unexcep
tionable cast-Mr. Thayer playing Evelyn; (Mr. Bour
ciCault, Blount; those two excellent specimens of
talent and stage experience, Owens and Browne,
Graves and Smooth; Mrs, Gladstane, Clara, and
Miss Robertson, Georgina. The piece was, of course,
handsomely mounted and beautifully rendered.
At the close of the comedy, Mr. Thayer was loudly
called for by his friends, and, 'coming before the cur
tain, spoke substantially as follows :

''It [email protected] a mary of th Fire Department
of this.eity takes place to-d y, and the programme
laid, down for the ocodsion shows that, like its prede
cessoc t will be a very handsome and ittrmctive dis
play, equally creditable to the. city which is so well
prepared against the dangers of conflagrations, and
the men who are ready to exert'themselves td lessen
the losses arising from the wonton, but destructive
freaks of the fire-fiend.
The history of the Fire Depactment of this city is
familiar to all who have been:Y'idents in it; the
varying changes under which it t3'a'own from com
prativo nhthingness to it. preseit strength and sta
hity ; the great -mount of active duty it has been
.dnopelled to discharge ; the many falsoalarms whieh
havetu tnmed out its strength, at all houra of day and
night ; whcan the summler sun was scorching the beds
of, former streams, and when icy pendants hung
fromi the over-charged gutters. Within its oncals
can be found a histor of the unfiiachitng conduct of
some who have metileath in the discharge of duty.

It cannot be :denied that there are members
who reflect no credit on the Company in which they
are enrolled and ihe noble organization to urhich
they belong ; bahsuce.aeceptionla instances belong

characte 6th firemen of New Orleans
is equially honorbt themselves and creditable to
the city, that co call out such an array of zealous,
ianeliannt and intiepid r oardians.
Tih grand displays thathave been made by the Fire
Department'on previous anniversaries, are familiar
to all; when Company after Company, from Algiers
add Lafayette to the loder bounds of the city, had
tuned onet with full ranks of uniformed men; with
fine, strong horses;.with engines polished until they
shone like gold in the sun'erays; with the rosy floral
offerings of fair friends ; with banners and music ;
making the day as jubilant and glorious as any within
the year.
The order of exercises to-day is analagous to that
former years: a marshaling of forces upon Canal
street, at nife in the morning;'with the three Number
One Companies-of Gretna, Algiers and Carrollton
in the van, followdd by the Chief and Assistant En
gineers, and otherCompanies in their numerical order,
extendingfrom Rbyal to St. Charles street-making in
all a battalion of twenty-four Engine and Hook and
Ladder Companietcomprising an average of seventy
five jnembers to each Company-and some reach over
tivo hundred, active and honorary-nearlytwo thou
sand.warriors of the flames, who, though neither sala
niandera nor of phoenix nature, can face, undauntedly,
the element which was innocuous to the former and
whichgave new life tthe latter. The procession, being
formed, will march down Royal to Esplanade street,
through Casacalvo and Mandeville to the Levee; up
Chartres and Camp to Julia; through Carondelet,
Apollo, MIagazine and St. Charles, to tihe St. Charlee
Theater where the annual address will be delivered
before them by JohnlS. Holt, Esq. The exempt fire
men, veterans of previous times,s will re-appear once
more' in the ranks which their presence formerly
graced, and be escorted by their successors to the
theater, where, aside from the attractions of the ad
dress and music there will be assembled agreat num
her of ladies, for whomn seats will be reserved in the
dress circle.
.The line of march will he taken up at ten o'clock
presely, and the theater will be opened at one. The
address will probably be delivered about two. The
programme of the celebration is very exact and com
pIrehensive, and satisfies all the wants of an occasion,
which, like the present, deserves to be highly honored
and held in general esteem; for, if a single act of
daring and philanthrophy, whereby one man is bene
fitted, deserves praise and the approbation of the pub-.
lic, how much more deserving are the labors and sac
rifices, theefforts and exertions of a great body who
have charge and custodianship over the more mate
rial interests of a metropolis as large, as rich and as
important as the one which sits regally at the moath
ef the great father of waters and reaches its Briarian
arns to every part of the habitable globe. A great
loss here is a great loss everywhere ; its prevention is,
therefore, a public benefit of incalculable value.
We trust a proper regard will be paid to the dcca
sion by all our citizens, and some proof given to the
fire department that their labors and Ihzards are not
without public appreciation. The evidence is cer
tainly well-deserved.
The High iVater.
According to all the information we receive from
the telegraph and the newspapers, it is quite clear we
are to have extraordinarily high water this season.
There seems to be a general feeling of appaehension
throughout the lower valley in regard to crevasses
and overflows, although that feeling has not led to the
commencement of precautionary works, so far as we
are advised.
An immense amount of snow has fallen the past
winter on, and adjacent to, the greater and lesser tri
butaries of the Mississippi river, and along the Mis
sissippi itself as far down as Cairo. The upper streams
have all been frozen, navigation suspended, and ice
accumulated in quantity and thickness to an extent
not paralleled within a quarter of a century.
That ice has broken and is breaking up, and that
snow is melting; and there are many alarming indi
cations that we must be prepared for higher water
than existed when scores of plantations were over
flowed and a large portion of the city of New Or
leans was submerged. Nearly all of the tributary
rivers are full and rising, and the Lower Mississippi is
rising with dangerous rapidity. The Vidalia (Concor
dia) Intelligencer, of the 29tli ult., states that the
river is swelling at that point at the rate of two feet
each twenty-four hours ! Should it continue to rise
at this rate for a very few days, numerous points
above and below will be in imminent danger of over
flow, and it will require great energy and unceasing
care to protect them, even if the city be not placed
in some jeopardy, which is not beyond question by
long odds. At all events, itmight be well enough for
the authorities to look to the matter, and be prepared
for any emergency that may arise. Have we any
protection levee worth a straw ?
We urge upon our country friends to look well to
their levees-to repair, strengthen and elevate them,
wherever it may be deemed necessary-and to oexer
cise an unceasing surveillance over them. The labor
and money will not be thrown away, even if the flood
is notas great as there are good grounds to anticipate ;
and if it is, they may prove invaluable and impreg
nable bulwarks to shut out a devastating overflow.
