J51 Os ?ý}cb Orlcaws Paii Crcsautx West Baton Rouge Correspondence. t WEST BATOcN POa(rv, Feb. 20, 1965. "Joy and pleasure now go round, Beauty's triumph is to-day; Every voice in chorl soutnd, This is Hymen's holiday. Take my hand, you have my heart, Indeed you've had it long ago ; And now well never, never:part Hy tn says he'll lhave it so." Married, by the Rer. Mr. Castleton, on Thln.day, the 7th inst., at the residence of Alex. Barrow, Esq., in West Baton Rouge, Mr. Tnosoas G. SfiPaiT , of Rapides, to Miss Jva..I. M., only daughter of the late HIon. Alex. Barrow. Married, on Thursday,, the 14th inst., by the Rev. lMr. Lewis, at the residence of her father, in Wilkin son county, Miss., Mr. B.Tr. BAnnow, of West Fell- I ciana, to Miass MTrrE, daughter of Col. Robert Sample. Thus you see, Messrs. Editors, that Hymen, that glorious god of marriage;has been amongst us.. He is, I think, decidedly the most familiar and agreeable of all the ancient gods, for he visits us in winter and in summer, in autumn and in spring. The denizens of.the tropics and the fur-clad inhabitants of the po lar snows are alike visited by him, for his torch is seen blazing in all parts of this habitable globhe. The marriages alluded to above were celebrated in the most happy and joyous maimner. The beautiful brides, dressed in the most gorgeous drapery, of the latest mode, looked like blushing peris at the gates of Par adise, while their attendants, the lovely maids of hon or, formed such exquisite "tableaux vivants" that the soul of an anchorite would have melted at one glaneof their angelic forms. To wind up these fe. tive oceasions, and, as it were, to top them off in a blaze of splendor. Mr. David Boarrow, of West Fell ciana, gave to the brides and their grooms, at his res idence, Afton Villa, on lastThorsdayevening. one of the most elegant and recherche parties I have ever attended. Afton Villa is a magnificent structure, ut built after the Gothic and Elizabethan style. The t. owner appears to have expended a large amount of time, of taste, and of money in its erection, for it is certainly the most princely residence I have seen in the South. Its numerous towers, and stained-gliss cwindows, its long verandahs and heavy cornices were.: all most brilliantly illuminated. In approaching the villa at night, the "tout ensemble " reminded one of a fairy castle of huge dimensions, while the mind of the beholder went back to the days of the great Al t. hambra and the wonders of Aladd8in's lamp. At nine o'clock a large and very fashionable assemblage of guests were seen in the gorgeousparlors. They were received and entertained by the warm hearted host and his beautiful and"accomplished lady with all the eligant hospitality due to the occasion. The music, by Mr. Meyer and his hand, from the Gaiety Theater of your city, was excellent. The dance began. First the quadrille, then the mrazy naltz, and then the " glorious fancies," those soul-stirring and entrancing :i measures that sage matrons and duenuas frown upon, but still delight to see-that sinners glory in,'while saints with pleasing horror admire and denounce-de nounce but still admire. E" Among this large and distingue assemblage I no ticed many beautiful facesi and lovely forms. Tensas sent one of her most lovely daughters from Lake - St. Joseph. Point Coupee was represented by a very vs elegant aid accomplished young lady, while Missis sippi had a perfect galaxy of beauty, mostly blondes. Kentucky and Tennessee were there in alltheir glory, commanding the admiration of all, while the Felici ai nas, ltong famed for beauty and intelligence, shone in all their splendor and dazzled in all their wit Among those from a distance, I noticed two gallani -gentlemen from your city and also one of South Car olina s chivalric sons. The tables were prepared witl -r;t great taste and loaded with every- luxury that hearl could desire or fitey suggest. Until three o'clock ii the morning enjoyment was kept up to its topmos height, when the ladies began to don the shawl, thi iET. hood and cloak, and "usad preparation" make fo their departure. The rougher ex, the "lords o Ii- creation," then assembled around the social board and withl operatic snatcies, sentiment, anecdote ani song ushered ini the dawn of day. Cupid's darts, if. not seen on this memorable occa sion, were felt by many. The. restless couch, thi >" waking pillow, " the woful ballad made to the mnis 1- tress' eyebrow,- will be the lot of many a swain til ;' the fair hand that gave the blow shall heal the wount -,-c or time hll rall calm the troubled breast. Thus ended this most delightful party. Messrs Editors are you married ? tave you a wife?--I meal have you two wives? If not, come up and I sil ' "put you through "-that is, just so soon as I car ui- "put myself through," which latter I intend to di just as quick as possible, provided always, I can gel the consent of some gentleman's daughter. For thej tell me " Sweetest pleasures never ceasing, . Lynch, who,'with his wife, was blown out to sea in an open boat a few days since, was picked up about seventy miles off the coast. 'This is certainly a most { mirfculous escape. The Sman Antonio Texan states that a compaly is organizing to leave about the Ist of April, for the sil er mines above El Paso. The mines are said to he richj, and those now working them are handsemely paid 16r their labor. Mr. Wood has visitedihe region around tile Guadalupe mountains, and is fully satin led that gold abounds in that country. Specimens of gold bearing quartz have been brought from these mountains. The editor of the Texair has one that was found about one hundred miles north of San Antonio. We learn from the San "Antimo Reporter that a party of United States soldiers beat one of the Mar chals of the city of San Antonio, on the evening of Sunday, the 17th inst., in a most unmerciful manner, and had not several persons interfered in his behalf he would suffered even more severely. Two of the sol dies were arrested. After dark about fifteen soldiers came intothetown, armedw.ith revolvers, went to a fandango and com menced a disturbance. The Marshal and a posse of citizens attempted to arrest them and several shots were fired, but it is h not stated that any one was in jured. Five soldiers were lodged in prison (the rest escaping) and tried iext day and fined, except one who attempted to take the life of officer Fieltrup. He was remanded to jail to await the sitting of the District Court. The Indians visited the Cibolo, en the 15th, and carried off ten American horses belonging to Messrs. J. B. Brown, Davenport, Harrisonand others. On Thursday night they returned arid took what, were left, amounting to one hundred head. They also killed several animals by shootiigtlhem with arrows, and these .arrows indicated that the Indians wert SLipans. The Liberty Gazette of the 25th nit., has the follow ingparagraph: ingparagraph: The Trinity river is again up and still rising. It commenced rising last Friday morning, and is now - feet above low water mark. The Winds for the last four days have been principally from south auitouth. east, and we have no doubt bat that tihe upper coun ties, bordering on this stream, have been visited with copious rains. The mail rider, who left Sw-artwout Friday last, informed the postmaster here that the river was rising at that place. During the entire day of yesterday the rain descended in drenching style. The weather is now clouded, with every appearance of more rain. Firom all appearances we think, boat men may look- for a " big river," and the merchahts in Galveston and Newr Orleans a brisk season. The New Braunfels Zeitung of the 22d edt., states the vicinity .of that place is still infested by Indiana, and relates the following occurrence : Frederick Foster, son of Edward Foster, while riding out about one mile from his father's farm, hunt ing his oxen on the 18th inst., was attacked by six I Indians, who fired several arrows at him; they ap proached to within about fifty yards of young Foster, dismounted and placed themselves behind their horse as a defense, seeing Foster armed with a rifle; Fos ter fired anld Idlled one of the party and a horse at the same shot--which so completely confused the other Indians as to affortd him an opportunity to get il--by throning awvay his rifle and putting spues to his jeony, ie, reached home in a few minutes, gave the alarma, and nith his ft.ther and brother-in-lhtv, re turned to where he had left the Indians; they found the Indians had gone, taking with them their deceased companion and young Fosters rile, leaving lime an only trophy, tihe dead horse, which they found to he a large American horse. They were all mounted on fine American horses, undoubtedly stolen from per sons in the neighborhood, as many have missedhorse lately.
