But for him the inittory stepsin the great movement might not have been taken, and we might still be laggingbehind our commercial com petitors without the first mile of important railroad. Therefore, we regard the probability of his return to .the Directory of the Northern road with unaffected natlafaction. His experience, judgment, energy and publi spirit, will give a fresh life and impetus to this great work. anEsCAN LEGISrLATIVE i EETING.--We direct spe cial attention to the prooeodingsof the meeting of American members of the Legislature, held in Baton Rouge on the 11th instant. It will woe seen that the nomination of Fillmore and Donelson was heartily en. dorsed, and all honorable exertions to secure their election pledged. The suggestion in regard to holding district con ventions for the purpose of choosing electors and alternates, is a good one, and we can see no reason why it should not be adopted. When chese conten tions meet,it would be wise policy to appoint one or more sub-electors for each parish. Such a course has been productive of fine results in other States. We \think it quite likely the recommendatibn that the Order be an open one will carry at the next meet ing of the State Council. In fact, whatever secresy there is about it now is merely nominal. 'ITE' "H" DREs, FANCY AND MASK IIBALL.-A very mysterious and tantalizing announcement may be seen under the heading of amusements, advertised ahortly to occur. Its position precludes the idea that the "H" ballis to be matrimonial, as that is no joke; or melancholy as that is not amusing; or military, for that always speaks out intelligent language. We must pronounce "H" mysterious; and yet, the ink lings that have been wafted to our ears, from one re liable source or another, all agree that this magnificent ball, with all its mystery, will be most notable and re gherche; thatbeauty will be there in its fullest flower; music most melodious ; and masculines most magni doent. It occurs at Odd Fellows' Hall on Monday evening, the 31st inst.; and may be simply a Monday mask ball; or, as S. G.Risk is secretary and master of ceremonige, it may be a Masonic mask ball. We have he.rd it suggested that it was a sectional affair and a Mlssilsippl mask ball. Each one must seek a suitable and satisfactory solution, and all right guesses shall be recorded in our notice, which ee intend to make, for the good of public cmiosity,', msoon as the secresy has lost its doak and becty apparent. LYcEas LpCToRss .-Dr. 1. A. Gould, of Cam. bridge, Mass, delivers the last lecture of the course ,,upon astronomy, at the Lyceum Hall, tomonorw evening. Theinterest of the previous lectuies is a sufficient guaanteethat this will well repay thoserwho .attend. CoLLras' CnasrCTERISTIC CoNCERT.--The char acteristi concert, announced by Mr. Collins for the present evening, owing to his absence from the city, ill not he given. Upon his return from Mobile, after the edoseof his theatrical engagement in that city, we andeqpiand the co.certs will take place. Letwh` Tatarei a signalized itself in 1 more Sz n ioie1. iahere -r dohlubt of that-not the sligh tVeistlIdi of doubt-not the smallest roohil ior doubt. The fact is as clear and indisputable as 'it is. possibldfor any eartnly fact to be. Am.ig the distinctions thus acquired is the one preiding to .entertain unbounded regard for the rigotas 6ttie people;yet, at the same tilse, 'refusing to allw .the people any showing whatever ! The Senate first assumed, contrary to law and usage, that the will of the people had been thwarted in the re ttutlOf the three Senators from this parish. What djd the majority do their? Did theyeject the sitting Selators and refer the mattir back to the eople--the dear people, whose prerogatives they were determined .upon vindicating? Oh, no-nothing of the sort! Theywould not trustrhe voters. Accordingly, they ejected one set and installed another set-- eected themrseiestfiito a supreme body of judges, jtiers.and electors, at one and the same period, from awhose de cision.there wasno appeal. It is true, strong appeals were made by the friends of the ousted Senatoi orefer the question back to the peojle, but they.were contemptuously disregarded. The majority loved the people so dearly that they concluded to dave the electors all manner of trouble. rA In the House of Representative the same game was played in every ejection case; and with an effrontery, too, which has no parallel inthe annals of legisla tion in this or say other Stath. In' the name of the people, gentlemen were expelled from seats to which theywere legally entitled. In the name of the people, the m a4d most irresponsible despotism was practE~ In the name of thhgpcot o na were in ducatd intq o$cets which tliepeople ii'primary capacity, had refrsed theme' -nd, irf#iaanae of the people, the people were refused the sqe ent of mat ters larest to every freemen. There was one exception, however, to the sweeping tyranny which prevailed. We allude to the contested 'election case from the'-Parish of St. Helena. -It is true lMr. Strickluand, the sitting member, who had beln duly returned, was ejected, and a new election 'oydered. This was agreat outrage, although not so bad as the others. Well, in due course of time, the electionytook place, and the American candidate-the identic. Mr. Strickland-was elected without oppo sition l So great was the disg'ust of thepeople at the arbitrary and unrighteous conduct of the majority in the Legislature.hat our opporents did not dare to mihke even a sho.i of opposition in the closely bal anced Parish of St. Helena. '- dl'new elections been ordered in the Parish of ir forSenators and Representatives, the same tdt nld lhave followed. Atall events, sch is oar list ad decided conviction. But this did not suit the views'orulteriorpurposesof thd majority. Hence, under the shadow of pretence,, they withheld all pooer-in the premises from the peopile and exercised it themi.eilves. erily .this is a " great country," and possesses the greatest politicians of any country on earth. Let things progress the next ten years as they have the past ten, and the people, claiming unlimited freedom, will wield less substantial power in governental af fairs than do the subjects of Loduis Napoleon at this moment.
