Sherman arrived yesterday from Red river, having on hoard the officers of the steamer Financier No. 2. Her clerk informs us thaton Saturday last, at 10 o'clock, P. M., she struck a snag when two miles above Haley's cut-off, in Red river, and sunk in 20 feet water. The books and papers were saved. The boat and cargo are a total loss; no lives lost. She was insured for $5,500. NICARAGUA STEAMsR SEIZRES.-The New York Journal of Commerce-a very able and reliable jour nal-does not think that Gen. Walker, by his seizure of the Nicaragua Transit Company's steamers, has laid lhimself liable to the provision in tlie Clayton Buldwer Treaty against obstructing the rights of transit. It argues that the route is still open to anybody and everybody, while at the same time it considers Gen. W. s proceedings rather harsh against the Com pany. But, concludes the Journal : air. RED RIvEn ITEs.--The Shreveport Gazette, of Ds the 22d, states that the roads in that section are almost impassable from mud and water. The river was at a stand. and had fallen above tFlton. The A Gazette says: It is distressing to hear of the condition of planters. c Many have planted their corn, but it is believed that i they will have to do all their work over again. Those A who are not so forward with their crops are better " oil, as they have saved labor and grain. as The same paper publishes the particulars of the p; suicide of Dr. Wm. Beach, who poisoned himself on MI Wednesday last. He purchased a vial of moplhine C in Shreveport, went to a cabin some distance out on a the line of the railroad, and swalloweda large quan. tity of the poison, dying soon aftervards. It was so supposed that his intellect had been affected by dis sipation.- - FRao Kiaesos.-The St. Louis Democrat of the i[ 18th publishes the proceedings of the free-soil Legis- f lature of Kansas on the 8th inst., from which we di extract the following : The House adjourned until four o'clock, A. M., at tl which time the joint convention was rolled to order e byr the President of the Senate. The roll wos called aid fifty-six members responded as their names were d called. On lthe first ballot A. H. IReeder received 30 votes-a majorityof all the votes cast-was declared elected to the U. S. Senate, from the State of Kansas. The other eighteen votes -we·e divided between Lane, 0 Parrott, Schuyler and others. On motion of lr. ts Adams, Andiea- It. Reeder was declared elected by e the unanimous consent of the convention. On the second ballot James It. Lane received thirty-eight votes, and was declared elected to the U. S. Senate. d TiE CALAMsTYs ON TIE DELAWARE.-.The loss of life by the ihrning of the Camden and Philadelphia i ferry boat turns out to have been much greater than 1' nwas supposed. The Ledger of the 18th states that vigorous search was being made for the bodies, and publishes a list of names of those recovered amount- - ing to 19; it also publishes the names of 29 who f are still missing. The bodies were taken to the Stn tion House as fast as recovered, anld the Ledger says : As each body wais brought in, the friends of the missing crowded around, anxious to learn whether the lifeless corpse was that of the object of their an guish, and when the remains were recognized, the t lamentations were painful in the extreme. The bodies, with the weeping relatives of the dead and the missing ones, maide usi a picture thalt wrung the I stoutest hearts, and the like of which we hole never to be compelled to witness agains. A short time since, while Maybie's circus was giv ing a performance in Tippahts county, Miss., a drunk en fellow quarreled with the Sheriff of the county, drew a revolver and fired several shots at him. The Sheriff was not hit, buta small hoy was shot twice in the abdomen, a gentleman had his face cut slightly, and a lady's bonnet was pierced by a ball. The boy, it was thought, could not recover. The desperado was seized by the crowd and severely handled, and was then placed in jail. Corn. Vanderbilt has written a letter denying that the Transit Company ever assisted Walker in his in vasion of Nicaragua, or rather, that it ever did any thihng to induce the movement. It turns out that the Sharp's rifles for Kansas, cap tored recently at Lexington, IMo.. were useless, the locks having been previously sent to Lawrence. It is a fortunate circumstance that neither party can use them. The scientific American publishes an article upon the discovery of a method for cooking without fire. It is a combination of tin cooking dishes, placed one above another, the bottom of one vessel fitting on tho top part of the dish below. In the lower dish of all, a small quantity of quick lime is placed, and then, by means of a tube, cold water is introduced upon the lime. Chemical action generates intense hea:t, whereby the articles on the dishes are quickly cooked, ready fort th able. LATER FROM MEXICO AND 'BEAS. LaTER FrEo J2f co-The steamship Texas, Capt. Forbes, from Vera Corz, 22d, arrived at a late a hour last night. We have received by her a fle of Vea Cruz papers up to the 21st, hut'nothing from the capital. The operations attending the revolution do not ap pear to be very active. In a leading article, lament ting the misfortdnes that have befallen the contey from anarchy and faction, El Veracruzano states that the result of the campaign against therebels had thus far been satisfactory, and that Puebla had prob ably, by that time, fallen into the hands of the Presi dent, an event which was expected to bring about an immediate peace. A letter, however, of a later date (17th) from Hoamantla, states that Hare y Tamariz still held possession of Puebla, but that he was com pletely hemmed in, his supplies cut off and his men greatly suffering from want of water. A steady fire of artillery upon the plaza and the town was kept up during the day and at intervals' through the night. The Government forces were constantly being rein forced from the neighboring country. It was also said that Har had made propositions to treat, but they were returned as inadmissible. President Comonfort'has issued a decree creating Board of Directors and a charter for a ralroaid rom Vera C(ru t btbhecity of Mexico, tin the plains of pam and Pebla. We find nothing further of note in th plIapers before us. Fnoo. TExas-The steamship Perseverance, Capt. Sheppard, arrived last night from Gilveston. The Houston Telegraph states that the Ralroad is now completed six miles from the city, and the cars are making trips. At the lastterm of the District Court in New Braunmels, three persons were convicted of muider in the second degree and sentenced to impr.ioipnent'in the penitentiary for nine years each. These persons, strange and shocking to relate-awoman; her dango. ter and son-in-law-were charged with killing the husband, father, and father-in-law. The testimony was mainly circumstantial, but of the most convinc ing character. The Central Texan states that a gentleman named Isaac Piplda died at the residence of James Bennett, five miles from Anderson, on the 11th inst., of expo sure to cold and wet. He was on his way to a new - home he had purchased on the Brazos, andissupposed to have a brother living in New Orleans. ie left a considerable amount of property, which will-be taken care of until called for by some one entitled to re ceive it. We learn from the San Antonio Herald of the 15th, that a lieutenant and twenty dragoons from Fort MIason, had a fight a few days ago on the Guadaloupe r ith a party of Indians. They killed three, wounded , several and captured all their effects together with rr several-horses. Among the plunder were found a t large number of papers, among which was a note for s £1,000 sterling, a deed for three huandred and twenty 0 acres of land, with $1,000 paid thereon, fdated in Feb re nary last, and a blank book containingthe owner's e name, and the date of his leaving a town on the Ills sissippi. GE.a. Score's BaCK PAY.-Oi the 17th a mass of documents was transmitted to the: House of Repre- 3i sentatives, in compliance with a resolution calling for p the correspondence between the Secretary of War and 7 Geneml Scott, relative to the latter's pay as Lieu- ta tenant General. sp In a letter, dated the.Ath of March last, Gen. Scott Fi sends Paymaster.General Lamed a memoranda ask- ii ing that payment be made in accordance therewth. int Lamed, the same dl , informs General Scott-that'he t cannot do sQ'o owing to' the .important qiations'm involved. In conseunence of this Genrel Sotte wrote at to Secretary DyPi vfwtinfofrns him that the resolu- 0 tion confltmitg the rank of tieutenant General is of the most limited character. The grade, he says, is raised, not to be filled like other grades, but for the purpose of being conferred as an acknowledgment of past services rendered in a war expressly designated; and the authority con ferred is so limited that when once exercised-it is gone. Secretary Davis, however, request the Attorney Genesl'sl opinion on the subject. General Scott nmeanwhile learning byl rumor that a Treasury functionary at Washington had cautiously o suggested that his claim might be rejected, on the ground that the statute originally creating the rook of Brevet Lieutenant General had been repealed, endeavored to anticipate that suggestion in Secretary Davis' mind, by another statement, fifteen days later i than the one previously sent, to which Secretary F Davis replies, saying-" In regard to the confidence which you express regarding the claim, it is proper to apprize you that I hard not come to the same conclo- i sion, and hence a necessity of a reference to the a Attorney General. , The documents comprise the opinions of eminent i counsel, sustaining General Scott's views as to the 0 pay, together with a long written argunent by the Attorney General, the President's sanction of the mine, etc., and Gen. Scott' receipt for $10,400, as awarded under the decision of the President. ; On November 0th last, General Scott, writing to Paymaster General Lamed, says: "I learned that Mr. Secretary Davis had withheld from the Attorney General every point springing from the face of the accounts themselves, and sibstituted a leading ques tion in bar of all compensation whatever, viz : Whether there is in force anylaw fixing the compen snation? ' The Secretary retained them in his own sufficient hands, and after another delay of more than nine weekls, has obtained from the President a decision against the double rations, and the higher rate of forage, to my loss of about $3,000. The Secretary of War in communicating these documents says the greater part of the correspondence is not within the scope of the resolution calling obre the information and therefore cannot be properly extracted. The suppressed papers enmbrace, it is supposed, the details of a fierce epistolary conflict, between these distinguished gentlemen. A very warm debate, abounding in personalities, occurred in the U. S. Senate on the 18th, in regard to the action of the Naval Retiring Board. It result ed in nothing. The New York Journal of Commerce says that a draft for $4,080, being twenty dollars toll levied by 'Walker upon each passenger who came over the Nicaragua Transit route, on the last trip, has been presented at the office of the Company in New York t city, where acceptance was refused. ciThe Washington Star thinks that the action of the Transit Company in withdrawing their steamships for the time being will be well received by our Gov ernment. A RAILROAD AccrucEs.-A dispatch of the 18th from Cincinnati sa:ys The express train on the Little Miami Railroad, ethis morning, run into the accommodation train Sstanding on the side track at Spring Valley. The dengineer, Chasles Hunt, was injured fatally, and died a soon afterward. The fireman was also badly burned, ri but none of the paesengers were hurt.
