Total, 6124 bales. Total receipts of cotton for the week, that is from Saturday morning last, 50,931 bales. BuosInss.-The very favorable weather acts as a great stimulus to the trade now goingeon in our city. Turn which way we will we observe evidences of the mighty congregation, as it were, of all the elementa of commerce at this time, though the receipts of cot ton and sugar yesterday were not up to the daily average of the last week, yet there were heavy re ceipts from the upper country, including several flat hoats which arrive and land at Jefferson City and Car rollton. To give our distant readers some knowledge af Jefferson City, which is located in our immediate vicinity, we have to state that it is a flourishing vil lage situated on the Mississippi river, and adjoining the good city of New Orleans, and stands now in the same position to New Orleans as the late city of La fayette, which is known now as the Fourth District of New Orleans. All the stock which seeks New Orleans for a market, is landed at Jefferson City; so there are large quantities of Western products landed both there and at Carrollton, four miles higher up, which are never entered into the receipts of New Orleans. If we were to include Jefferson City in our daily dottings, we might cause some of the doubtful friends of New Orleans to stare at the daily increas ing magnitude of the business of this emporium. The day is not far distant when we shall witness the annual discharging and selling of produce at Carroll ton to be transported direct from that town via the Jefferson Railroad to Lakeport for the several markets in Alabama, Floridaand Georgia, including Key West, and, by a calculation before us, it is cheaper for all vessels drawing from seven to nine feet, engaged in the trade with Havana, and other West India and gulf ports, to come through Lakes Borgne and Pont chartrain, then to come up the Mississippi river. In coming through the lakes, the charges of pilotage, tonnage and wharfage are obviated, and the increass of business and increase of vessels at the levee; cauis ao much crowding in the season of business, thai every outlet to the gulf will have, ere long, to be called into reqlisition to promote the general com merce of the city. .r. The Albany Register states that a hotel keeper of that city turned out one of his boarders for offering to bet a large amount of money that Fillmore would not be the next President. The landlord stated that he could not have an insane mpn about his house. The handwriting of Rufus Choate is said to be as difficult to decipher as the arrow-head inscriptions. A Massachusetts paper expresses a fear that he will be disfranchised in consequence of the writing test in corporated in the constitution of that State. An in. stance is stated in which a board of lyceum directors were unable to tell by the answer of that distinguished gentleman whether or not he had accpted their invi tation to lecture, after a laborious and vain effort to decipher his scrawl. rPORTIne 1N THE NORTu.-The Sandusky (Ohio) Register of a late date says that the lake is open and the market well supplied with ducks. They are found in large flocks on the overflown prairies and meadows in that neighborhood. THn PRODUCTIVE INDUSTRY OF MASSACHUSETTS. An official statement is about to appear, in relation to the material condition of Massachusetts, and intended to show her industrial growth since 1845. The annual product of the State, says the Baltimore American, is now put down at $300,000,000, showing an immense increase in ten years. The value of the cotton manufacture has increased from twelve mil lions to twenty-six millions, yearly; that of calico from four to five millions ; and that of woollens from eight to twelve mnillions. These are the identical branches of business that were to have been ruined by the steps that were taken in 1841 in the direction of free trade, but they appear to have been revived in a very agreeable sort of a way, their aggregate amount having increased froam $24,000,000 to $43, 000,000. The value of the shoe business, however, has increased in the, greatest proportion, rising from fourteen millions of dollars in 1845 to thirty-eight millions in 1855. SecouLAR OcouuneNE.-uIn clearing up one of the rooms at Stanwix Hall yesterday, a waiter dis covered a cat so crowded into a boot, that it was with difliculty that she could be extricated. Having got her out, the next question in order was, "How did she get in?" This was leading to a long-winded dis pute, when one of the bystanders took up the boot, gave it a shake, and tossed a half grown rat upon the floor. The discovery of thle rat solved the riddle. The rat to escape the cat rushed into the boot; the cat to secure a game dinner rushed after him, and with such force that she could not back out again. A BAD HIT.-All the world do not go to shooting galleries, but many visiting them have seen a contri vance, by which, when the bull's-eye is hit, a spring is touched, which, acting upon machinery, throws out a human figure, in the most horrible contortion, as if pierced by a bullet. A gentleman of this city, wiho is a pistolshot, was invited, when in New York, into a shooting gallery having this contrivance, which he had never seen nor heard of. The first shot struck the center, and out sprung a man, who fell, as our friend supposed, shot through the heart. He fainted, and upon coming to himself, found a crowd standing around him, admiring the effect of the joke, and also of a large basin of which had been thrown upon him, in which the shooting gentlemen had washed their hands, the sable streams of which were running over his face and linen. lie left. [Norfolk Herald. Now OnLcAoa no a exr RonGe RAIsaoo - On Monday next, in contOsarty, with a resolulton of the Police Jury, the land tag-paye oof East Baton Rouge will vote for, or gain.t,ith proposition for a parochial subscription of one hudaI thoenand dot iars to the stock of the New (Ore and Baton Rouge Railroad Company. It is to be hoped the subseerption will b ne i mously voted. There should be no oppoletton | The parish could not make a better or a sefetinvet ment, or one that will add so much to the deve.p. mentand improvement of the interesting section of country through which the road is to pass. The corporation of Baton Rouge has already subscribed $100,000. If the parish does the same thing, there can be no doubt the aid of the State will be ex tended next winter. All that is wanted is that the people directly interested, and who will be immedi ately. benefitted, should start the enterprise liberally and practically. Had this been done two years ago, the cars would have been, months since, ranning over the iron track. It won't do for a communitytoask aid from abroad, or from the State, without first showing that earnest efforts have resulted anspiciously at home.: The re peated failures ofapplicationstothe Legislaturemay be traced tothis fact. Pt ongE.-MIr. Buchanan, the American minister, has sent home from London an original portrait of John Hampden, the celebrated English patriot, who was one of the first to resist the encroachments of the Stuirts, and to assail the p.re rogatives of the crown, in the great stroggle for popu lar riglots whichled to the estahblishment ofthe English Commonwealth, and subsequently planted on this soil the republican germs which have grown npinto a nation of thirty millions of freemen. This pbrtrait belonged to IMr. John Macgregor, member of .Parlia ment for Glasgow, and is presented by him, through Mr. Buchanan, to the Congress of tlieUnited States, who will undoubtedly give it aconspicuous place among the national pictures. It is one of the bnly two original portraits of Hampden now in existence. Monitor states that during tihe last session of the Walker county court, a man named Franklin was convicted of murder and sen tenced to be hung. A reprieve was afterwards ob tained from the Governor, and a messenger was di: patched, who, after riding all night, placed the docut ment in the hands of the Sheriff on the morning of the day fixed for the execution. That officer examined the paper, andfinding that it was not sealed said thatl possibly it might be a forgery, and he would hang the prisoner anyhow, which he did. RATHER MEAN.-The Detroit Tribune tells a story of a shingle-dealer who fell overboard from a lake steamer. Among other things thrown into the water for his preservation was a bunch of his own shingles, which he happened to seize. When taken on board he expressed his gratitude, but made a fuss about his shingles, and told the captain he should expect to be paid for them. The captain replied that he was very sorry the shingles had been thrown over, and that they would not have been had he known the value the owner placed upon them.
