Dr. Baird delivered a lecture last evening at the Lycelm Hall, which was very well attended and was listened to with much interest. . The subject ,vas the Greek Church, which, in the fifth eentury, had the most friendly feelings both with the Greeks and Russians. Their bishops and arch bishops were originally taken from Constantinople. The causes of the present war were taken hold of and 'iven in' detail-tracedolown to the present time. The French wentto the aidof the Catholics, the Eng lish to assist the Protestants, and the Russians to the aid of the Greek Christians. The wars of the churches of Bethlehem anduJern salem, between the old Greeks and Catholics, were described. The Greeks having possession of the church in which Christ is said to have been born, still show the star significant of his appeannnce and ad vent. Both churches, however, claim the spot. The star was lately stolen by one party or the other which, is not known. The cause of IMenschilcoff's original visit was men tioned, and the course of diplomatic proceedings were alluded to. The history of the origin of the present 'troubles was given, and a prophecy that Russia would ultimately reap the benefits of it, ventured. France and Englend havelost manly men and much treasure, and will be compelled to maintain troops in Turkey for a considerable time, in order to secure quiet. An allusion was made to the inconsistency of the Turks in their diplomatic proceedings at Vicuna. Turkey is, however, willing to extend every possible right and every advantage to foreigners; but not willing to make them better than her own citizens, which is, also, the case with our own people. The leeturer, at the close of his discourse, expressed a wihi that he might be able to return to our city the ei"uing winter nld continue his addresses-a wish which we very heartily endorse, and which was approved by all who were present. CITY Boans:-We have heretofore called the atten tion of our readers to the advertisement of the Cotm eissioners of the Consolidated Debt of New Orleans, setting forth that sealed proposals will be received at their office, in the City Hall, until Thursday, 24th inst., at.j2 o!cloek If., " for the purchase of series of four hhldrs 'and fifty bonds, of one thousand dollars each, said bonds to be dated Ist of IMay, 1856, pay t in 36 years, at the office of the Treasurer of tihe city, with interest coupons attached thereto at the rate oa f six per cent. per annum, payable semi-anually in the city of New York on the 1st of May and 1st of November in each year. These bonds should arrest the attention gf eaIgl talists, and ought to command more than tli t ,ee calls for, in the present flush coiidition of the noe market. Better or safer bonds were never offerldibr t purohase or sale. The entire property of the city of New Orleans is responsible for their redemption, and the provisions in the charter guarantee, beyond pos The Ners fronm Nicaragna. Te steamship Charley, Morgan, Capt H. Place, from San Jnin, de Nicrioagua, arrived in port yester day morning. The news she brings is important- some of it mournful. M., on the 15th, and at one. landed her passengers, who prp.eeded up the. river immediately. The steamnship Orieibdt, 'Capt. Tinkleiaughfrom New York, with 525 passengers, arrived on the 10th:. The passengers were immediately dispatched up the river. The ad ditions to Nicaragua by these two steamers, amount to sdmne 800 men! The 'Morgan left- in port, a San Juan, the British ship of war Eurydice, Capt. Tarleton, and the W. I. HM. steamship Solent. Capt. D. W. Thorpe, of the Nicaraguan army, and F'ifatthews, came'passengers on the Morgan. It appears.that the rout of Schlessinger's command at San Rosa was owing to the gross negligence and uninitigated cowardice of that officer. His whole con duct stamp's him as a wretched poltroon, for whom deith would'be too easy `a fate. It appears that the men'under Schleesinger were encamped upon an eminence, surrounded by dense shrubbery; no suflicient guards were stationed to provide against surprise ; parties, from five to fifteen, -were out foraging ; mand everything in camp displayed the most culpable and criminal carelessness. It was under such circumstances the onslaught of the Costa Ricans was made. Confusion.pretailediand the com mander-in-hbief showed the white feather from the start. The attacking force was 1000, although, it is supposed, not more than 500 were engaged at first. The assailants were up within fifty yards, so says one 'ecount, before they were discovered, armed with Minnie and' Mississippi rifles. Schlessinger's were about 280, but only about 175 came into action; the French and Dutch companies, under Legree and Prange, not forming at all. Captains Thdrpe's and Creighton's companies made a stand, but, being de. seorted by the others and by Schlessinger, were obliged to retreat: From forty to sixty men are supposed to be killed, and about eighty are missing. The enemy pursued.some of the detached parties, but did not fol low the main body, which retired to Virgin Bay. The surprise cost the Nicaraguans about 50 or 60 men out of the 175 that remained at their post. Of those killed, belonging.to the New Orleans company, Capt. Thorpe could orily remember the names of Messrs. Grayson,Duna and Scobey. "On thehomeward macitto Virgin Bay, the dangers and fatigues were dreadful. With bleedingfeetandhungeredstomachs, they plodded on their weary way. Their sufferings paralleled the sufferings of our forefathers during the Revolution. Their return trail was closely followed by the enemy, and the escape of the little band from capture was almost miraculous. Subsequetlf tothis defeat, caused by bad manage mentand cowardice of Scellessinger, another fight had taken place at Aropokabetween 200 of the enemy and 14men under Captain Baldwin, in which the enemy was defeated, withaloss of 30 killed. Captain Baldwin lost two men in the engagement; Second Lieutenant Rackstraw, and aprivate, name not given. Schlessinger, according to the latest advices, was undergoing court martial. The probabilities are his shrift was a short one. An abbreviated rope and the nearest tree were all he deserved. When the steamship left, Rivas was the head quarters of the Government, and a company was left in Granada to guard the communication. Gen. Walker was in command of about eight hundred men, marching against CostaRica, and he was suppo sed to be in Buena Casta at the sailing of the steamer. It is said he was in good spirits, and full of confl dence that he would trieunph over the enemies of NicaragUa. We doubt not he has won the laurel crowvn of victory ere this. If reinforcements have poured in from the Pacific side as they have from the Atlantic side, there is no doubt of the issue of the contest. Anglo-Saxon valor, and might and right, have triumphed. Communication is open on Lake Nicaragua and down the river to San Juan. Twelve steamers in all are plying and under the control of the Government. These afford great facilities to the Nicaraguan gov ernment, and such a man as Walker knows how to employ them to advantage. The foregoing comprises everything of importance we are able to furnish this morning. The next in teligence will be awaited with an absorbing and all pervading anxiety. na. We inadvertently omitted, on yesterday, to return our thanks to tihe officers of the excedlent Red river packet, St. Charles, for late Shreveport papers. 21 Cnlt.orEs STtnoT, Aprll 2a, 1t56.
