Etter editor and proprietor of this val sabla jo.ina; Mr. E. proposes to remain in the city several-days on business connected with his useful nir _til paper. As the Telegraph eirculates xt lery, oput a large and rapidly growing ection of onatry, the trade of which comes to tew Orleans, It i, conieqrl ntly, a very desirable mediom for merchants and busieis men to advertise in. And we take great pleasure io cordially recommending it as suob. Tnnt MAcs.-The Northern mail, avia Mobile, came through-yesterday, bringing dates fromall points as late as due. The Edropean niols by the steamer Africa, to the thI were also received. C(oroue.---he receipts for the forty-eight hours endingat six o'clook list evening were large for the advanced period ithe season, being, by the Sullie Rtobinson, from Yazoo river, 951 ;Sherman, from oShdeveport, 149; Eastport, from Tennessee river, 3,240; N. Soets on NscxoAGoA.-We see, it announced that the meeting which Mr. Pierre Soatle is to address on thegreat bjct of the day, Nicaingua, is called for this evening at eight o'clock, at the St. Louis Hotel. This bare announcement will suffice to draw a large crowd. ODD FELLowS' ANNIVEsRSAR BALL.-The second t anniversary ball of the Odd Fellows will be given t this evening, at Odd Fellows' Hall, and will, on. d-oubtedly, be a very pleasing and gratifying couvo- t cation. Weare indebted to the committee of arrange- i ments for an invitation, which we shall be most happy to honor. BooaK CATALOoUE.-We have been favored with a catalogue of the publications of Phillips, Sampson I Co., one of the largest and most prominent publishing houses in the country. It sometimes turns outa little offensive matter for Southern readers, but, always, a great deal of what is instructive, useful and amusing for all. Mrossrssprr No. Two.-There will be a meeting of Mississippi Fire Company No. 2, at the engine house, this evening, at 7 o'clock, on business of importance. If the members are as punctual at the meeting as they are at the fires, there will be a prompt attend ance, astlhere ought to be. BLAcgwooe's MAGAZIEo.-- We are indebted to J. C. Morgan; Exchange Place, near the Post-Office, for acopy of Blackwood for March-a very entertaining and instructive number. SrT. OhAeLES TnEATER.-The Mbartinetti Family hIave their benefit at the St. Charles Theater, this ,evening, when " A Duel," Musical Olio, " The Milli-. ner'," and "No. One, Round the Corner," will be played. The old favorites, with snuch a bill, will un dloubtedly attract that attendance their ininmitable performances so well deserve. CAIRROLLTo HOTEL.--This -establishment, under the attentive and intelligent supervision of our friend Charles H. Horton, is becoming a very attractive and poi..ar retreat. In fact it is a delightful spot. A plelf4nt ride on the cars of a half hour's duration, a stroll through the gardens which are now dressed in spring's most beautifid garb, the pure air, the fra grance ofqowerm, and the difference between the 'crowded, bustling city, are alike refreshing and invig orating, and should be enjoyed by all. Then, ohould the inner man require spiritual or sub stantial consolation, either want can be supplied, speedily and pomptuously. The cuisine of the hotel is of rare excellence, as many hundreds will readily bear witness. If there are any doubters we recom mend them to go,walk about, see and taste, for them selves. They will then enjoy a practical illustration of the verity of what is above stated. TEB1RRmC SToau-Probable Loss of Life.--Yes terday was notable in our city and all of its suburbs for one of those severe and continuous storms which sometimes sweep, like a besom of destruction, across the earth. In the city it was but slightly felt, but oil the lake we fear that it was very destructive. We are informed by Mr. Whittimore, of the Pont chartrain Railroad, that the storm commenced, at tlhe lake end of the line, about 9 A. lI., very suddenly. There were four skilfh out at the time, which have not aince been heard from, and are supposed to be lost. There were eight persons in them, whose names we have not learned. A great deal of lumber was washed away. Whlarves and bath-booses were washed away by boats and waves dashing against them. The mail boat, which left at the usual hour, was compelled to returu and find anchorage in her old berth. Fuller particulars will doubtless be supplied to us to-day. Yr OW FEr.v.n---The Britishi brig Eclipcse, Csapilt. oMtitchell, arrived at Qarantine on the 18tll ist., from Bahia, (Brazil,) making'the pnassage in thirty days. The Captain reports having lost one of his crew dlr ing the passage, of yellow fever, and that this disease prevailedto some extent at Bahia when hie left port. otiwithstanding the prevalence of yellow fever et Bahia, the Captain found so difficulty in obtaining a clear bill of health, whichl he pronptly preiented on his lreival in pert. Those ,ills of hIealt mi st be sreli able documents. If the mere exhibitions o a bill of health, were to serve as a piassort to vessels at Qiar antine, our wharves, during some period of the year, would be lined with infected vessels and cargoes. [NeCw Ysork Times; 24th. We much fear the pestilence will ravage New York and other northern cities, this or the following sum mer. Its march has been steadily iI one direction afor several years ; and, very likely, the ahole continent will feel the ellcts of its terrible visitations before it stops. If the yellow fever ever gets to aginsg epi demically in New York, the horrible scenes whivo ,ceompanied tie plague in London, will be outdone. The Washington Star oa.ys that Sesator Douglas' bill for the admission of kanss, while it will pss tihe Senate by a large eaajority, will have a lclar majority in the Homse of Representltives. It provides, as our readere are aware, that when Kanssa Ias the requisite opoltation, she may enter into the Union with suct .a constitotion as she may adopt, without reference to ie eluvesy qaurtien. STATE POLITICAL mOVEIwEN PS. There is but little apparent stir in the political world of this State atthe present time. The lull is, and has been, general. It is easy to account for this state of things. The American party, although their candidates are in the field, have had no disposition to enter upon an energetic canvass, simply because there were no opponents to fight ; and the Democrats have preferred to await the result of the Cincinnati Con. vention before putting forth their accustomed vigor and energy. It is true, there has been some little slkirmishing of a guerilla character; but no general movement of any kind has been entered upon, and probably will not be until the standard-bearers of the other side are proclaimed to the world. Still a great deal of preparatory workhas been going on; and when the time arrives for the ,regular open ing of the campaign, the opposing hosts will be in better discipline and more thoroughly organized than ever before. Atleast, such is our conviction. So flar as the American party is concerned, we feel sure. Being relieved of the imputation which the nominal secrecy of the old organization devolved upon them, and which was unrighteously and unscrupulously used by theirenemiesto theirdisadvantage, the mem bers of our party can enter the are.a of discussion on, equal terms and with the most flattering prospects. Then, again, a salutary lesson has been taught, al though at the cost of defeat. Inthe coming canvass we shall not overrate our own strength nor underrate that of our opponents, as we did the last time. Last year over-confidence, and its consequences, had more to do with the November rout than all other causes combined, On the third Monday in June, the American party will assemble in State Convention in Baton Rouge. Plans for a complete reorganization of the party will there come up for consideration and discussion ; and if wisdom and sound practical policy, the fruit of ex perience, and a thorough knowledge of the science of politics, govern the deliberations, of which we enter tain no doubt, thehappiest results may be anticipated. In the meantime, District Conventions in each of the six Electoral Districts, will be held at the follow ing times and places: For the First and Second Districts, in the city of New Orleans, on the second Mondayin June. For the Third District, in the town of Thibodaux, on the second M[onday in June. For the Fourth District, in the city of Baton Rouge, on the first Monday in June. For the Fifth District, in the town of Opelousas, on the first Monday in June. For the Sixth District, in the town of Minden, on the first Monday in June. These Electoral Conventions are called to select, each, one candidate for elector and one alternate, pledged to the support of Fillmore and Donelson. Thiswill be a work of equal delicacy and importance. Much, if not everything, depends upon a judicious selection. The persons chosen should be folly posted in political lore; should be eloquent speakers and able debaters; should be fully competent to meet the proudest champion of the enemy; and, above all, should be industrious to the last degree. The electors should go to work with a will and afervor, an energy and a power, that would leave no portion of any dis trict uncanvassed or aly foe unmet. The experience of the past year and the result of the election incon testibly demonstrates the necessity for the adoption of this course. It would be political suicide to nominate any but industrious, indomitable and energetic men, for electors. A man may possess all the other requi sites in the most exalted degree, but if he is deficient in industry, or afraid of mosquitos, or objects to the toil and trouble of traveling, speaking and writing, or doing anything and everything else an honorable man can do, to promote the success of the cause in which he is engaged, he is not a suitable person for elector or alternate. These are plain truths and spoken plainly. The position of a Presidential elector is one of the very hardest sort. We here renew a suggestion we made to the Electoral Conventions some weeks since. It is this: Let sub-electors, in addition to the alternates, be in every Parish and Representative Dis in the State, whose duty it shall be to canvass closely every settlementf within tle district allotted to This plan has been found to work admirably in other States, and would in this, without .loestion. L.CTUes s e.sn POsTRY AND ArT.- -By referring to our advertising columns, it will be seen that the Rev. Thomas L. Harris is to deliver a course of three lectures upon the albove subjects, at Odd Fellows' Hall, the first one to be given on Wednesday evening, the 30th inst. To those who have ever had the pleasure of listening to the eloquence of MIr. IHarris, it is quite needless to add anything to the simple an nouncement of his lectures, to induce them to attend. But there are some, no doubt, who have not heard him. All such we advise to attend his first lecture, in which he will give readings from some of the most popular modern poets. After listening to his first lecture, we feel sure that it will require no urging upon our part to induce them to attend the balance of the course. We have scarcely ever heard any one who excelled MIr. Harris as a reader of poetry or prose, and to listen to his reading of Longfellow's "Psalm of Life" is worth more than the price of ad mission to his three lectures. We hope that he will recite that poem in his lecture. We expect to see Odd Fellows' Hall crowded on the evenings of his lectures. Why are Shanghan roosters like early spring flow. ars?
