Consequently,.we are not astonished at 'the ildignation of his friends, on account of the un expected and summary manner "of his decapitation. They have a right tohbe indignant, as well as an in defeisible privilege to express that indignation. Aud, if their feelings do not find vent at the polls, next monith, we shall be willing to admit that we are much mistaken in the' character of numerous indi viduals who have been, ever since the result of evening was made known, indulging in curses both loud and deep. We consider the con •teniptuous rejection of MIayor Lewis worth full five lindred votes to the Amnerican party. 'Botloef the Democratic candidates, we understand, for the two highest offices in the gift of the people of MNe- Orleans-the Mayoraltyl and Comptrollersphip -reside above Canal streetl! Whether this selection was made' by. sign, or accident, we are unable to say, not being in the secrets of the camp of our opponents.' We can only point to the fact. The down town. people, who, certainly, are as deserving as the up, tovn 'people, Will not, it is presumable, go off into spasms of delight because their section has been stupenpdously' honored, in thes choice of :the Street Commissionerl. We don't believe they will get up a mass meeting, to be attended by every moth er's son residing below Canal street, in ordef to thank the Democratic Convention because they were not overlooked, overslaughed and forgotten, entirely! We have heard that no such idea is in process of being carried out. We are opposed to sectionalism ia cities, States and nations. Sectionalism never does any good, and ustially harm. But, whence spring the disasters of I sectionalitm? What leads to the evil we have hinted 3 at? What originates, continues, and gives vitalityto t sectional divisions ? It is not difficult to answer these qunstionse as we will proceed to show. There would f beno:sectional feuds, no sectional complaints,no see f tional dhplintes, sere the interests of all sections cared 'for alike, and offices, emoirunents and honosa, dis C tributed equally. ' It is the advantage which one section, by management, intrigue or otherwise, oh 'tains over tliho'thers, that leads to all tihe trouble. In the course of the ensuing week we presumne the candidates of tie American Party will be presented to the people, anrid then the municipal struggle will commence in downright earnest. It is impossible for us to designate the nominees of that party, and it would be improper if we could; yet, from our knowl edge of the delegates selected we are free to say that candidates, from Mayor to Assistant Aldermen, will ine r who will command the confidence of the community-men of irreproachable character and undoubted ability-men who possess large interests in the city-men who will legislate for the corporation as they manage their own private estates-and, men who will carry out the Reform Measures of tire present i Reform Council, which have extinguished a floating , debt of half a million of dollars, redeemed the credit s of'the city, and reduced the taxation upon real estate e seventyper cent. r. The corporation needs the services of justsuch men. The Americal Party will present none other. Great Littlenesses. The peculiar penchant that seems to have been be stowed uponthe sovereigns of our almighty nation to baptize the future Senators and Presidents who are the fruit of their loins and the fullness of their lives, with magnificent names-those of heroes, divinities and demigods-bas a very curious commentary of times in the fates and fortunes of their bantlings ; showing that no nomenhlature, however renowned it may have been made- by its pristine possessors, is a sufficient guarantee against the pricks of outrageous fortune, and the stern result of time. When IMrs. Jolhn Smith has borne a male child to the next census, amd thereby depleted her lords purse by so far as she has increased his pride, nothing so filly gratifies her matronly heart as to designate the bantlingwith tbhetitle of Alexander, Napoleon, Wel lington, Washington Smith. If Xrs. Brown has ac eumplished a like ovarian proceedure, with a femin ine result, the sponsor must back up Victoria, Eugenie, Marie Louise, Cleopatra, Josephine Brown! a reductio ad abaurdslu, not always fittingly consid ered. Well, in the process of time, and, in accordance with the great gestation of years, the twain arrive at one legal period of acecountability. They have been petted, and petticoated, and peppeeruiinted to an ex treme, as great littlenesses usually are. The world has laughed at papa's folly--who deep in sugar, or cotton brokerage, has only had time, occasionally, to kiss, or spank them; and at mtamma's folly, who has made them "a little lower than the angels," so far as dress and dimity are concerned. At the crit ical monment when the blossom should be ripening into fruit, George Washington disappoints parental ambi tion, by going off before the mast, or engaging in the tallow trade, while the seraphic Victoria Eugenie, marries a bread-baker, ortwhat is worse, takes to trav eling with some amorous Lsthario, forgetful of State and matrimonial requirements. That is, the bubble bursts, in both instances. " Calling a thing so, doesn't make it so "--a tin kettle is not a gold- vase; though Joseph Jenkins, a "self-made man " of Brattle street, may advertise it as such, in this country every pot must stand on its own bottom.; and those proud parents who wvisbh a post obitum fame, as the Rudolph's of a great gener ation, add nothing to, but subtract much friom their longings, by these nonsensical nomenclature, they are silly at the start, ridiculous and uscless ; nmuch better omitted than allowed. As singularities we have chiefly noted them, and because swe have found such a deluge of greatness, floating through the local col umns and extracts of our newspapers. An old family name is a family heritage, just as much as is the fliamily play. It may be sullied, but it is more like to be sustained from feelings of fiamily pride common to all men. But an individual deluged under one of these avalanches to which we have re ferred, will feel it, and be very apt to ridicule it by some means or other-if only to show that the is not responsible for the folly of his christening. (live us good, wholesome names, as well as wholesomie chil dren, and there will be leos trooble in public chroni eles, and fewersscases of chronic amanlgamation. LovoIto HEARTS AND BLOODY HEADS.-One of tllos little romantic episodes that re ever occturring in the nt ottderoeoorrent of life. came ot a fo.us yesterday, in a hotel outst. Charles street. It resulted ii a little American ard at big Irishll 0n00 getting yery bloody heads, and on tnterestong yo0ng lady oheddingoahoitinnityhof lchroymal o erl.droops. The way of it The little American, who is a respectable Northern trader transacting business here, boarded with his daughter at the lotelsome weeks ago. Thile daughter was "sweet sixteen," rather hildsome, and not altogetlhr impregnablo to the tender sentiment. A big red-whiskered Irishman, who boarded in t0he house, took note of these circumstances, and toin due time stole the guilless youno g heart---c' lming its fair possesor, even as tile wily serpent clhrms the unsuspecting bird. The father, becoming Pplrised of this, at once took his daughter to the reso. dence of a friend in another part of the city, tlous cutting off the red-whiskered gentleman from all ncaees to his itanoortota : for the oltd man had good reason to know that the said gentleman was a "bad egg "-a loafer-a designing scoundrel, who was furtlhermore reported to have a deserted wife and children in existecllne somewober. The fellow, however, traced the young lady to htier hlilog place; and not dnring to enter the house, would visit the vietho ty periodically, and dodge about the corners and alley-was, t waiting for an opportunity to exchange billrta-dot with thie youog lady whenever she would appear upon the balony, to twhich rloe hadt access. Tile father managed to beolne pottt sese of someof the masculine missives, and found their burden to be all sorts of lognbrious whinings about lies behig old otupon hin, a much persecuted 0ad very unhappy young laon, with heart. rending solicitations to her to leave her fathe's il on rule and ity to tlle-.led of the world withilh, etc. The fellow became note rolne to all tile neighbors bat tile fathert w hah tprovided hinmself with a big stick, eould never catch hi m about the house and being not more than half as large as the Irishmln, did not deemr it advisable to go in search of linm. Thuis matltes walgged ntil day before yesterday, when it was reported to tile old mani that the Irishman had left the city, and that he might take his daughter back to the hotooel t. clitrles street, with afety. This he lind no Iltention of doing, however On tile smne d'ay, Ilis Ig tllhter having 'ccoion to go out shop She, of coorse, reported thlis to lthe yoOg lady'r fatlher ; o d he, upol inqur, aiseeraitued that tie fellow had no t t left tane. This, and otser circu tante es, led himt into the belief that a con pi0cy had been fornIed for tIle puriits of getting hi duO0gh0r within cer loo f reirlogoint and this he onslldered good cause for '"an 0C.110." So. waivinjg all eonsidcratlons of sepe rior age and inferior rIz end st00 ni, took h is tloly club,0 visited the Irlhomd Iu 0his room at the hotel on St. Charle street, and pitched into hilm 8leso cerelonie. Ie gave hlilt se erol voolent blow.s over thle 00e00, causing he blood to sow freely, oand the Irishnan retaliated by resting the stickfrol ]k m and giving himo an equally bloody head in return. The uproar of the fight drew the other istuates of the house into the room,I and the combatants were separated Just as the old man w.s very naturally coming int far the worst of the bailrlo The young lady, sohocked at seeilng her fatecr coe toorne nor ered will blood, ta well as at hearing that r er lover was in similar bloody condition, toolk on as all sentihnental misses do in similar cireumtbtanes-cgav herself up to tihe elUrful Woe In its sublimeht depths. EXtract of s letter from Norfolk, Va., dated Jan. 17,1 06: Oneoof Herring's celebrated Fire-proof Safes wa in Adams' Epreiss Office when the buildilg was urnred, n oral weeks ago. It remained huried in the rubbish until Thursday, when II was taken out. The fire, on the occasion alluded to, wa one of the fiercest we ever saw, and when the chest was found, after a lapse of forty days, it was surrounded by emboer, glowing brightly. When opened, the papers and other articles it contained were found to be sound and generally in gfod enlldition, tllts affording another proof of thle security and superiority of thele safes. The one alluded to may be seen at the warehouse of aesrs,. Rowland & Iroo., who are agenlts for the oakser,. It shows learsly the evidence of a severe trt of t i incombustible quallilios, when its e1twior wan red-hot in the bllrillg furlnlle that roared around ir, and Iaid the ember that glared aroulnd it for hori , days and weeks.
