No, 70 Camp Str1eet, Thuaday E vening, lay 1 S. it vas decldedly dull on the street to.day. The most promi nent attraction was the offering of the 1312 share. of Bank Stocks on aount of the snnec.lon of Jon L. Iarrlm. A er-I peeled, the greater part was benght In. The lMshares Citizens' Bank beuing the only ock sold, it was bought by An eminent brokerat1l4l. The Bank of Louila Stoa k was run up, and bought in at 157, and te State Bank at 141. There were no other movements In stocks, exeepting the .ale 20 shares new stock of the Bank of New Orleans at 101. To be explicit, it must be understood that what is termed new stock is that whleh has been taken towards the additional capital, and which will only be entitled to a pro rats dividend in July last. The old stock will receive the full dividend, which, we presume, will be ere per cent. The books for sulcrhption to the new stock were opened for thirty days, which would expire to-day, provided the time was considered a thirty consecutive days, as Itls con strued that thirty dnysmeans judcial days. However, a the stock Is all covered, the Directors may keep open a day or two longer to accommodate some old stoekholders who have been so much engaged as to overlook the spe1lfed time. There were ame operations in CGnal Bank, say one hundred shares on P.T. This Bank will make its regular Smi-annual dividend of fve per cent. on the third Monday of next month. The Exchange market was heavy to-day. The Banks were Selling on New York over the counter in small sums at prem. Outside it was dull, very dull, at an 74; ixty days sight were placed at 14 to i4,. A round sum, say y30,0 was Mod atl. dis count, the range was, however, for Al bills 1 to 1.3; good com mercal drafts' 1f to It , with a variation of % to IJ on other Northern cities. Generally, buyers of 60 days on New York were not willing to ake to any extent better than 1(. Bankers bills held at.% to I dia. In foreign bills the market had a very languid turn, though drawersare very frm at 9f% to 9% and 9%. For sterling, Bills of lading drafts rule from 83 to 8,7 and 9. France have declined slightly, and the best rates obtainable were 5.13%, the range of the market we place at 5.1835 to 5.133, and closing in favor of buyers. The Bankt of Philadelphia have recently made their semi annual dividends. It will be observed that the Banks with the smallest eapit.am have done the best and most productive bnsi ness, paying profit at the rate of 15 per cent, per annum. Although it is supposed the working expenses of a Bank with a capital of ! bb,00 or $1,00,00o are just as mucl a Bank with a cpital of two to three millions; yet, we believe that Banks with small apital are more conducive to the public good than large, which frequently prove unwieldly capitale. We will cite an tnstonce at home here. Would not the cpial of the llank of Iuislan he more productive to tthe general welfare if it was divided iuto four Banks of $1,0(X,000t' With its great surplus, or reserve fld, and its surplus in its actual daily movement, which appears to keep about $5iW,(0 above the line required by law, it is impossible to fnd full employment for its resources, at leat it appear so. Suppose the Bamk of Iouislana was to establish a branch up town, as has been desired by several prominent mtokhohlers, would not such a branch receive a share of patronage that does not bd its way to the old Bank However, a1 such a thing Is hardly within the scope of the charter of the Bank, we shall not have 7 branch on Camp street. We can only consider te Ajax as a colossal pillar of extraordi nary inanial trength, and let commercial hurricane and Inaneial blasts come of the worst kind, it stands there as one of the proudest and strongest fortresses of banking that is to be found in the commercial world, equalled by few and surpassed by none-and, although its administration is deemed entirely too conservative for this age of progress, yet the mercantile and finaneil community of New Orleans, we believe, take pride in feeling that it hus an Institution which cannot, udler any eir enmstneces of war, political or commercial revulsions, be com elled to suspend its duties to the public; therefore, if stock holders do not receive an extra dividend this season, it in satisfactory to know that its equivalent is in the vaults of the Bank, and though an extra may come now and then, it may be well enough that the Bank should always have good reserve, for we do not know what a day may bring forth. To return to the Bankeof Philadelphia, the Philaelphia Ledger, of the 7th, gives the following ; All of our city banks have Iust made their semi.a tnnn dividends, with the ,exception of te Bankb of North America andl thie Bankt of 'ennylvlania which declare in.Tanr and TJul. The two new banks have not reported dividends as yet that we have seen, altholngl we heard it stated one of them had earned a dividend, and would probably declare it. The whole amount of mousy coming on the market from these dividends is $(L,2,60. The whole amount put in eirculation the present week from various companies ii probably exceed hal" a mit. lion, and ought in the nature of llthingu tohave a favorable lunu. ence on beth stocks and credit, Our advises from New York to-day are of the 9th inst. The money market there was feverish, but accounts appear to vary. Some of the money articles appear to be in favor of the Bears, and others in favor of the Bull interest. The Baltimore money market was in the following position, so the Patriot of the 9th says : The money market has been more stringent during the pact week than for some time past. Thiisthsolngto avariety of eauses, bat such am are gtenerlly usual at this partsiclar 0eaSO, of the year. The offerings at the vartoua Banks are very large, and some of them have discounted very little for a week or two past, while otbers are doing a fair average amount Money on the street is also tlgbt, and the rates for prime and good paper have dvamced. T ae general impression among bnsdness men is that in another week this pressure will be greatly- if not wholly removed. Som'e further accounts of tie intelligence by tile North America front ~iverpool are at hand.
