S t In tlle genera money market to-day Pummer stagnancy pre dominated. A tconab between two distingulhed note brokers, S under the shde. of the Branch Bank, on Camp street, was the St most notable event In the paper asrket. The sall, on the Ajax it were not large; It being the only Bank twhich discounts on Thursdays, the presumption was it might have large tfferings. It would require some unusual excitement for the n eaon of theB year to require the ue, con the part of te commercial commua. nitty, of the full resources of tile ank of Louisiana. On the treet there were me small amont oflong dated s paper placed at 8 per cent., and good second grade, which would B be discarded altogether in a time of pressure, wtas placed at 9 and ti per cent. e The movements In Stocks today were 137 shnres Bank of 8 Louisiana actually transfered) at 154 net. 8 Tile txchangl e market Is not so very inactie as thIe Beart de ireto see. CheeFks on New York, in snms of $50,000 to $I00,00o, have been sold nsf3 fraction variation from % discount. The rates at tile counter of S the Banks are par, and as they are not generally in want of0 money, they I.ld firmly at that, and also make fair ales to their Si customer. First-class clear bills hfave been taken for investmentt at 9t and 9pp , which T shows a real advance. The Banks, whicl are drawing, ask 9%. Bills with shipping doeuments were taken yesterday and to-day t 83. The seasonm for this discription of document is e fat draw. fng to a close. It will be observed there is a great difference in the rates at tie present time, and the corresponding periods in 1854 and 185,5. We have often wondered at the rapid increase in the banking capital of the city of New York, but when tile great and rapi t au tmentation of population, the vast congregation of business from all parts of thle world within its boundaries is considered, t tie extension of capital can no longer be regarded as only a natural consequence. S e gather from an interesting report, lately presented to the t Stockhlolders of the Bank of Commerce, New York, a Bank I organized under the general or free banking law of that State. As this Bank is the agency of one of our city Banks, (the Canal Bank) we are induced to offer tile follwing highilyinteresting facts regarding it. It was organied on tile lot of January, 1839, and commenced bnsiness in April of that year, with a nominal capital of b5,000,000, which hea all been paid up. The present number of stotkholders is 1,370, and the average numberef shares held by each person is 36%p. The eighteen associates composing the first Board of Directors subscribing $I,505,0C of the ttpital, and the remaining 83,495,000 was subscribed in February, 1840. Of this subscription the last instalment was not paid up till ay, 1852-thbirteen years after its subscription. There was an interval of eleven and a half years between the final and preceding payment on instamuents. There are two shareholders holding one thousand shares each r-oue residing in London and one in New York. The Directors have, as is known, resolved to increase its capital to ten millions of dollars-gradually, however, as an increase of one only takes place tlhis year. The articles of association provide for an in crense of capital to twenty millions appropriated to private shareholders, and beyond this, by a permission for additional subscriptious on or behalf of the United States of America, or yn behalf of anly or either of the separate States, as the Board of Drector maydeem fit. The inttittp ionis a close eorport - tion. Its I)trelors arl elected for life, andthey elect their tuc cessors. The stokholders have no voice in the matter. This is a corporation of tremendous powers, with its anxiln riesk-directors elected for life. Talk about the power and des otlism of the United States Bank, throwing aside its branches, it was a mere plaything with the Bank of Commerce. REGULARITIES OF THE BOWELS-The long and sue ceeesul experience in the use of this remedy by the Inventor, in the treatment of all the diseases for which it is recom mended, together with the highly reepeetabbe testimony which t numbers bear to its eicacy in the careof the Bowel afee. tone of Children, Diarrhea, Cholera Morbus and Dysentery, in grown persons, entitle it to a higher confidence than if it were one of the ordinary humbug medicines of the day, which pro fess to perform miracles and ere ll the ills of life. Its charc ter has been fully establihed in the hands of physiian of the highest character, as the following letter trom a gentleman now aresident of Lockhart, Texas. will show: "DELTA, (Ceohomet Co.) MIt.t, Mey 31, 317. 0. O. Woodman, Esq. -Dear Sir-There re but a very few of the nostrums now ote ered to the public to which I would be twI Itng to lend tle sanction of my name, howevere humble it may be. either in the world of letters or of medicine. Observation and experience, however, have forced upon me the conviction, that Billings' Carminative and Astringent Syrup is a very valutable compound, prepared pen scientfite principles-peer fectly in harmony with the laws of organie lfe--and, therefore, deserves (althoubgh its Ingredients are kept seret) to rank higher in the scale of remedial agents than a mere nostrum. It affords me pleasnre to be able (without the fear of successful contrdie tion) to add me testimony in favor of its eeciey, a safe and pleasant remedy, in all the forms of bowel eomplaints for whieh itis recommended. I have used it myself inaeverelveryin teresting chronic cases of Diarrhea and Dysentery, and recom mend it in many others ; and i every nstanee, where esuch a preparation was indicated, it proved sneceseful. WOODMAN, corner Common and Magazine streets, Jel2 5md&W New Orleans, La. -WTOODDIMAN'S EXTRACT OF JAMAICA GINGiER--Such is thle lintimate connection between the stomach and the nervous sTstem, that the health ofone depends very much upon the state of theother, and a medicine which is grateful and beneecial to the stomach, has tle effect of restoring the nervous systemt its natural tone and vigor ; and owing to these cireumLhmles the EXTRACT OF GINGER will be found an excellent remedy for Nervous and Sick Headache, for Sea Sickness,, Nausen, etc., etc. The great advantage of the Fluid Extract, or Essence of Jamaica Ginger, is, that in avery concentrated form, it contains all the active principles without any of tile inert matter, which makes it much more agreeable to the stomach. Dyspeptic persons who are troubled with nausea, or distress of the stomaclh, after eating, owing to the weakness of the diges tive organs, will find this preparation invaluable, as it usually 1 afords immediate relief, and is far more efcacious then brandy or any other kind of ardenitspirits, as it timulateand warms the stomach, producing a more permanent relief, without the injurious consequences which result from alcoholic stimulants. During the prevalence of the cholem, it was found of the greatest benefit for preventing a weakness and releation of the bowels, which produce diarrhea. Afew drops in a tumbler of water, with sugar or syrup, form a beltelful and delightful beverage i this Extract counteracting t the bad effects of the cold water. WOODMAN'S EXTRACT OF JAMAICA GINGER f is elaborately prepared from carefully selected articles of the L best quality. CAUTnno-Persons desiring an article that can he relied upon, S prepared solely from PUne JAxAtCA GINGEe, should he par tienlar to ask for "Woodman's Extract of Jamaica Ginger," which is warranted to be exactly what it is represented. 0. 0.
