Thoughsome cold sil desirable, yet it Often ocors that ".O tnmtch agd th mthight ited rvene. However, the hZermoneter did not show anything above 36 yesterday morning. It moderated considerably to wards night, and all hopes of a real freeze were baninhed. There was no more talk about fever, epi demic and so on. There are some cases still linger Ing, and there may be sporadic cases for another month. People continue to flock into the city, and the talk Is, where and how are so many persons to find employment? Certain it is that thousands of mechanics and laborers can find employment, but not one-half of those who come to this city are of this class. There are hundreds of persons arriving of no called profession other than mercantile. Of this class we have a redundancy born on the soil, more than enough to supply the demand for years. Though we have warned this class of persons that there was no employment for them, yet they rush in upon us heed less and regardless of our warnings. We believe if a merchant was to advertise to-morrow for a clerk, he would have one hundred applications before 12 o'clock. Nor is this all. The number of persons out of employment at this time in New York is computed from thirty to fifty thousand, and if they had the means to pay their way tP this much abused city of ours, we should have many thousands of them; as it is, threm will be more come than is desirable, and many more than will be wanted in any capacity. There are also thousands in Boston and Philadelphia who would be glad to get here. In the meantime, we continue hourly to greet our returning citizens and absentees. The most of them look almost as well and hearty as if they had re mained within the confines of the city all through the summer. The talk is, that business is about to open in earnest, brought about by the resumption of navi gation in the upper rivers, though in some of the small streams it is only partial, yet it is ample to move onward a quantity of produce. If croakers could cause a freeze in the waters above, navigation might be suspended. In the meantime, there will be an immense amount of produce on the way hither. Ice embargoes cannot be expected for some months. The activity and briskness on the levee and the land ings, from the upper landing for steamboats and steamships to the Government Wharf, Third District, exceeds anything for the same period for many years past; in fact, we do not believe there ever was so much business going forward at this season in any previous year as there is at this time. It is hardly necessary to allude to the large receipts of cotton, sugar and molasses, which are daily landed. The sugar depot or landing is in the best of coudi Lion, yet we expect to find that notwithstanding the attention of our sugar factors, with the zeal and activity on the part of our gimlet rangers, there will be planters to cavil and complain. We have con tended that this was the best sugar market in the United States. It surpasses all others in prompt re turns, cash sales and low charges. We have been favored with an account of sales of 236 hogsheads of New Orleaussugar, sold at public auction in Louis ville, week before last, say on the 2sth of October term of sale, four months' credit, as follows : The stock of old in first hands is very light, and there have been no arrivals of new. Henry & Co. sold yesterday at public auction, on four montis' cre dit, 231 hogsheads New Orleans sugar, old crop, at the following prices: 14 hogsbeads at 6e., 10 at I;:.e., 6 at 6ic, 5 at 6.c., 10 at le., 5 at 7c., 5 at 7f.. 7 :it O6ic., 31 at 7fc., 88 at 7Ae., 8 at 7tc., and 27 at tic. Now, what would a Louisiana planter soy if a fahc tor sold his sugar on four months' credit, even at an advance over cash rates ? Yea, what would he say ? In New York and Philadelphia the same system of credit prevails, with an endless roll of charges, from a rusty nail to half a days' insurance, and three cents "postage. The Northern mail came through yesterday by both routes. The Edropean mails by the America will probably be at hand on Friday morning, and the Asia of the 30th from Liverpool will be due to-morrow, though she may be intercepted oft Cape Itice, pro vided the speculators are awake. The America will leave Boston for Liverpoolon Wednesday next, and consequently to-day is the last day fbr mailing let ters here for a certainty. Since the above was written the Kangaroo of the 27th has been telegraphed, with one day's later ad vices. See telegraphic column. BOYCE, a membEer oI ICoer . IX nc Fire Cgpi), Nu. 1;3.
