It is estimated that Mr. E. was worth eight hundred thousand dollars at the time of his death. His im mense land speculations at the West, now in culti vated farms, proved immensely profitable to him. The remarkable part of his will is, that It gives to Yale College seven eights of his great estatel The provisions of his will are : . Twenty-five thousand dollars in trust to his son, Henry W. A DiuOLtCACL DEuD.--The Chicago Trihbune gives the following account of a locomotive being thrown from the track of the Galena Railroad, a few days ago: As usual, the trackmen had gone over the track before the approach of the 7:10 Freeport train from this city, and found every'thing right. After their departure, some fiends misplaced the switch, which was an unused one. The train came on about eight o'clock, and the locomotive was hurled from the track into the ditch, instantly killing the fireman, Edward Comstock, who was standing on the guards oiling the machinery. The engineer, Hamilton by name, saved himself by jomping. Fortunately noother persons were injured. E.sT INDIAN IDOLATRY.--Rev. Baptist W. eNoel, London, in his recent work on the government of India, makes the following singular and, doubtless, authentic statement: In the Madras presidency there are now 8,292 idols and temples receiving from government an annual payment of £89,678. In the Bombay presidency there are 26,589 idols and temples under State patron. age, receiving grants to the amount of £30,587 10s; to which must be added the allowance for temple lands-giving a total for the Bombay presidency of £09,859 6s. Ill the whole of the Company's territo ries there Is annually expended In the support of Idol atry, by the servants of the Company, the large sum of £171,558 12s.' In view of these facts, it is not surprising to learn (as we do through the Dublin University Magazine) that a prize of fifty guineas has been offered for the hest essay in the position which the Government of India ought to assume towards Christianity and Christian missions. GREAT LAND SLIDE-One lan Killed.-The Han nibal (Mo.) Messenger of the 4th inst., gives the fol. lowing account of a land slide near that place : We visited yesterday morning tie scene of the late terrific slide near Lover's Leap. From the top of the bluff, for some four hundred yards, theentire mass of earth has slidden some forty or fifty feet, carrying in its wake trees, stumps and everything in fact, that offered any impediment to its wild career. It most indeed have been a grand sight to witness this awlul avalanche of upwards of 106,000 square yards, whirl. ing down the deep descent with the speed of a hurri. cane, and a rombling almost equal to that of thunder. From ten to twelve dirt cars were smashed to pieces, and many of their axles-four inches in diameter, and of solid iron-were snapped like so many reeds, others were bent completely double, and the bodies of the camrs scattered hither and yen. The excavator was crowded from its former posi tion a distance of forty feet, the hind wheels taken from beneath it, but no damage done to the ma chinery. The man who runs the machinery was at his post, but jumped off and ran in time to save him. self. The engineer who was inside with the engine, was not injured in the least. The only life lost was en unfortunate man named Fierney, who stood on the upper bank digging away the surplus dirt left by the machine. When ha saw the whole bank above him was moving he started to run down the hill, the slide of course overtaking him and burying him ia. mediately some thirty feet beneath the surface. They have began clearing away the dirt from the machine, and will have it at work again in a few day. It is probable that the body of the man Fierney can. not he found within a week, and its exact locality is not known. There were only three men at work at the place at the time et the aecident, or the' number of deaths would have been greater. The following is the certificate of the U. S. Consul at Monterey, word for werd. Headandjudge: Unarsa searsCoaoL,.A J4 .. . . i. Yt, November 20, l8.. I hereby certify, that on the Id of Novembher pert, I received an express from the cityof Saltillo, signed hy several Americans, to the eflect that on the let of November, inmidday, and in the vicinity of saidl city of Saltillo, that two Americano, nae Jamm s Glenn and Andrew B. Glenn, being father andson, were barbarously murdered and robbsd ed on the high rod by an armed escort of seldier from Sealtllo, under the command of lawyer Mifguel Gomi y Car. dens, and that justice was refused the aurviors of said James Glenn. I therefore proceeded to Saltllb to investigate the affair, and take evidence from the parties who were present when the crime wau eom. mitted, as also from those who took an active part in the matter during the proceedings in court, at Baltillo. The result of the evidence taken byme, In connection with inquiries made both at Saltillo and the neigh. borhood where the murder was committed, leavesn no shadow of doubt on my mind that the murder was committed under circumstances of most brutal snd wanton atrocity. That the object, without doubt, was robbery, and that the leader and prime mover, Miguel Gomez Cardenas, had no just or legal cause to follow said Gleans on their journey, his only ex cuse being poesemsed of a common citation froma police court for James Glenn, which involved no furo ther penalty than the issm of a warrant in cas of Its not being respected, and said citation wnas only for an alleged sum of ($12) twelve dollars, said o he iucurred to said Gomez y Cardenas. Said citation should have been served by a police officer of the court, not by an armed band of murderers. The evidence, as well as the subsequent inspection of the arms in court at Saltillo, proves to a certainty that the murdered menexpected no attack,as they oflfered no resisatance. All the arms were exhibited in the court, after the murder, fully charged, and not din charged, for several days previosa. At the request of Mrs. Margaret Glenn, sel widowo of James Glenn, I have given this certificate. J. W -.Lu, Untedil St.lestu Consu. The horse taken by Gomes Cardens was purchased byi Mr. Glenn, in San Luis Potosl. Gomez threatened violence unles given up, he having this Same file of soldiers with him. The twelve dollars spoken'sof in Mr. Walh's certificate, Is the amount due from Go mez to his band, for services In robbing Mr. Glenn of his rightful property. In Saltlllo, thtis man Orten a, their evil genius, turned up, and eame forwau to claim this horse the eondtime. Heconldestablish no claim, yet our Consul permitted him to betaken Advices were sent to Monterey to the effect that Mr. Glenn's clerk, Wilson, was in the lower country, and could testify to the legitimacy of Mr. Glenn's claim. Mr. Wilmon afterwards visited Monterey and offeredto testify to these facts. Why his testimony was not taken, I presume our Consul can explain, or should doso. To the shame of the Mexican Government he lt said, that this man Ortegsa now prances about the streets of Monterey on this horse, while Miguel Go. mer Cardenasstruts them with the air of a king. In a conversation with our Consl, he said" he would not be satisfied until he saw Miguel Gomez Crdenas and the whole corporal's guard toin pris.qn theaip Monterey ; but the truth is, Miguel Gai q CGajene is a man of more influence, and commanadenitomre spect from these Ladrones, than Gen.lidaurrl gan, and In my opinion Vldaurrl is afrahid to preny him. Complimentary truly, to this Govestimnat and flattering to the hero of Aqoalulpo. The "OCfliah Boletin,"a sheet published In Monterey, is lesued weekly, filled with matter relative tothese murders and this robbery-a tlssue of falsehoods of the most flimsy character; and by evidence of Mexicans alone can be proven hiAs hbase damnable lies. This is done to shield this Goverhment against any ateps that oar countrymen may take. The truth in, they are frightened, lest our Government awake from its long sleep, and in its haltF-awakened condition should seek redress before It was fully' conscious of lts actions.
