ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT OF LAW DEPARTMENT. The annual commencement exercises of the Law Department of the University of Louisiana took place at Lyceum Hall yesterday, when the degree of Bach elor of Laws was conferred upon the thirty.four graduates to whom diplomas were awarded. Long before the time for the opening of the exercises the hall was filled by a large auditory, the graduating class, the faculty and other distinguished membersof the profession being assembled in the Mayor's par lor, whence they marched up to the hall in procession. After music from the orchestra Christian RBoselinus, Esq., called upon the following gentlemen, compee. lug the graduating class, to rise and come forward: E. Allain, J. Allain, R. Beanvals, J. A. Breaux, L. L. Butler, T. E. Camus, H. A. Croes, W. B. Denson, G. Soniat Dafoesat, W. Duncan, J. T. Ellis, E. T. Fel lows, James Fuller, J. A. Haynes, A. D. Henriques, W. H. Holmes, J..S. Hyama, E. Janin, J. Lanrans, C. H. Luzenburg, G. S. Mayo, G. M. Morgan, J. D. 8. Newell, James Newton, E. F. Newman, W. V. 011O vier, jr., S. E. Packwood, E. C. Preston, A. Sambola,. A. W. Semmes, S. S. Semmes, B. McK. Spearing, t. Richardson, J. J.Smith. The class being arranged in a semi-circle in front of the stage, Mr. Roselias conferred upon each and every, member the degree of Bachelor of Laws, and after wards addressed them in a very appropriate and im preesive manner. He charged them ever to retain a lively sense of the dignity and importance of the pro fession with which they had identified themselves, and not to forget that it was notatrade tobe followed for sordid lucre only ; that the mission of Law was the 1 conservation of justice, and the lawyer should be a participator in its administration. He charged them never to foment'litigation, but to persuade to compro mise-that the beet aspect of litigation was that it was but a necessary evil, and that no true lawyer, or one who respects his profession, would be instrumental in provoking it. He charged them to refuse to take part in unworthy cases, and never to lend themselves to oppression and injustice-to let no occasion induce them to resort to undue means to gain a point, or to I do that as lawyers which they would be ashamed to do as men; to let honor, truthfulness and all virtue be their professional as well as social guides. After another blast from the magnificent orchestra of the Orleans, Rufus Waples, Esq., delivered the " Alumni Oration," an effort distinctively marked by the humorous bent of the speaker's genius. After an exordium qppropriate to the occasion, he took up the subject proper of his oration, "The Golden Mean of Government "- that in medio tuetisiaus ibis equally removed from license and from despotism, which was contemplated as meet readily attainable by the triad form of government-the republican form of government of the United States, which It divided into three branches, and was triune-the Legislative, Executive and Judiciary branches, each forming a side of the triangle, and which must all retain their proper balance and proportion to maintain the unity, strength and effectiveness of the whole. But one of the sides was becom. ing weakened and had received a severe blow, one which would effect its destruction and that of the whole fabric, and which was the making of the judiciary elective, and thus sapping its In dependence at the core. This was the first great demonstration of the tendency to Absolute Ie mooracy, which was as bad, or worse, than any other absolutism; this was the crushing down of the bar rler between Liberty and License, leaving no breast work between justice and the populace, who could prevent and disappoint it, a it might when misguolded by the unscrupulous and demsgognical to the elti of candidates wholly disqualified for its aduliatst lion by character, learning or experleaeess oriog for ana4 eselting lb etlI weening tendency of mocracy, populir PO orator pro.eede system of elegi.
