GmneIrns.-Mr. Old dings publishes a card in the Philadelphia papers of the 24th, defending himself from the insinuation implied by the refusal of Capt. Brown to answer the question, in conversation with Senator Mason and Messrs. Faulkner and Valiandigbam, whether Mr. Giddings had been consulted about the Vir ginia expedition. He pronounces this attempt to assail him dishon orable, and denies ever having been consultet by Brown in regard to the Virginia expedition or any other expeditions or matters whatever. The Washington correspondent of the Baltimore, Sun has seen a n-mber of captured letters and other papers, and he says: One of the letters, dated Oct. L,,i1 s written from West Andover, Ohio, by John Smith, meaning John Brown, to his father, in which he states that he had seen ,. P?. G., (that is, JoshuaR. (iddingsa ) at Ashtabrook, and that he (MIr. J. R. G.) had" su scribed $3 to the stock," and that the next day he (Mr. Giddings) had promised to go to Ravenna and "raise an association there." Other papers show that the "stock"and the association" are directly comnnected with the at tempt to excite a vervile tnsurrection at Harper's Ferry. ThL. it would seem that there is evidence to show that Mr. Giddings contributed aid to the proposed treasonable attempt, fully knowing its character. But still, while this amounts to moral conviction, it may not be legal proof. In another letter from John Smith (that is Brown) to his father he expresses his surprise at the change of the time for the "opening of their s.ainesul that is, executing their plans. He says the spring had been agreed upon as the time for action. The papers show that the conspiracy was very extensive, embracing persons in many of the States. Regarding the Harper's Ferry Provisional Gov ernment and panic, the Philadelphia Presssays : It will be well for our Southern brethren to turn their eyes to the patriotic and sympathetic feeling in the North, where all classes and all parties- Democrats, Republicans and Americans, with very inconsiderable exceptions-stand ready to sustain them in all their rights, and at every hazard to pro tect them from the horror of.aservile inasurrection. This fact should present itself to the reflecting men of the South, and should guard them against the slightest encouragement of any stop which might look to comprehending the free States inthe slight est suspicion of sympathy with the actors at the late tragedy at Harper's Ferry. HEAv.y YImLD OF Coroet LI Anl,.sAsiE -In the Helena Shield we find the following: Some idea'may be formed of fite extraordinary fertility of the Phillips county land, when we state that one emall field of six acres, situate about fif teen miles sooth of Helena, has, this season, piro dued over twenty thousand pounds of seed cot ton. Sixteen thousand pounds have already been gathered, and it is estimated that there are still six or seven thousand in the field, The laud is owned by our fellow townsman, R. W. Casteel, fEsq., who has in the same tract several hundred acres equcally fertile. In truth, there are hundred of thousands of acres of this description of land in the counties of Phillips, Mississippi, Desha and Crittenden, and all that is needed to insure heavy crops is proper cultivation and good seusons. Frederick Douglass failed to meet his engage ment to lecture in Syracuse on Friday evening on "Self-Made Men." .Possibly 4he diclosures at Harper's Ferry induced him to take thg under ground railroad to Canada. There is "treason" in that oyster-stew letter to Brown. The next intel ligence from the author will probably come from the other side of the St. Lawrence. FATAL LOCOMOTIVe ExrPLOsIOn.-A dispatch of the 24th from Schanton, Pa., says: The boiler of the locomotive Virginia, belonging to the Delaware, Lackawana and Western Rail road, exploded in the yard at this place about 10 o'clock this forcnoon. Robert Stowell, engineer; William lBrown, fireman; Mr. Swarts, (formerly so toscow, Pa.,) and two others, whose names are un known, were killed. The engine is a complete wreck. A SIGuLoAn ABUCvrIOs CAsE.-The Bangor (Me.) Union states that Rev. William S. CiUey absconded from Dexter on the evening of the 13th instant, taking with him a young daughter of Rev. J. F. Witherell, editor of the Gem and Gazette. The correspondent of the Union says: IIe succeeded in getting her into a carriage with him by making promises to her, and telling her that he was oing to the cemetery and wanted her to go with him to place some flowers and ever greens, which he had obtained, on his wife's grave; but when in the carriage he drove rapidly away, she protesting against going with Itim. Her father was soon apprised of the fast and followed in pursuit as soon as possible, but it soon became dark and he was unable to follow or trace them, but learned froln a telegraphic dispatch from the City Deiarshal of Augusta that Mtr. Cilley arrived witi the little girl at that place at two o'cltock A. M., Friday, and left in the Westcrn train at eleven o'clock-destiatioion unknown. Mr. Witherell has been in puroult of them. She was a lovely aurd In teresting girl, aged about thirteen years, and the aflitr has elicited a great deal of sympathy for her and her aflicted friernds. The citizens of Dexter Ihecld a meeting and pased resolrtions denouncing the abduction ils proper terms, and chose a committee to "use all honora ble means to secure the return of the child to her parents and friends."
