Agents for the sale of CLEMONS, BROWN A CO.'S SINGLE AND DOUBLE CYLINDER COTTON GINE --A.w- Bates' Patent Steam Gauges, No. 8 UNION STREET, Between St. Charles and Carondelet streets, New Orleans. The Machinery offered for sale by us it from stablishment. which have been engacod in manufacturing for the Southern country for tile prst twenty-Tve years, and it will be found to be entirely adapted for the uses for whirh it is intended, of a muchi anperlor quality to a great deal of the machinery brought to this market, and at extremely liberl prices. Persons wishing to purchase ae invited to call and exnmine for themselves. CIEMIiNS. BROWN & CO.'S COTTON GINS have been used snucCessfny in various partt of the fouthr or fifteen years and more, durthg which time upwards of FIVE HUNDREi of them have been sold annually. We guarantee them to hb equal in every respret to any gin sold in this section. TIHE DOUILE CYLINDER GIN i. a recent invention of Mr. J. F. Brown, of Columbus, Georgia. We refer persons who are intereted to the following certificate, which is taken from hundreds xhich we have received : REtcELt. COUNTY, ALA., February S, 18i9. Meesrs. Clemlt., Ilrown e Co Gentlemen-I have u.,ed one of your Double Cylinder 6 saw G ins during the pat eason, and take pleasure in stating my cont viction that its performance i fr superior to ally Gin I have ever tried for spetd, convenience and safety. I was indueed to buy it because I believed it would pay for itself in the eaving of thue in one crop, and it hb fully answered my expectations. It re. quires no more power to propel it than a Single Cylinder saw Gin, while it cleans twice as much cotton per day and is much easier attended to; this is ccounted for from the lesser width of the breast, and that it will gin all tie cotton that can be put in the roll wlthcut throwing out or choking. It clean the seed re markshly cletn, and makes as good a Sample of cotton as any Gin I have ever tried. The cotton buyers of Columbus have re peatedly told me I had a superior Gin, without knowing it was one of your Double Cylilder style. Your Double Cylinder Gin I consider a great improvement on the ordinary Gin, and the planter who makes over fifty bales of cotton will ind it to his Interest to lay aside the Single Cylinder 40 or 0 saws Gin and plae himself utder obligateons to you, by purchasing your Double Cylinder Gin, and thereby save time, labor and money. Without the pleaure of a personal acquaintance with you, permit me to ssure you of my frl consideration. Mars. W. G. Clemeon, Brown & Co. Since then tie air p as been cold and windy-decidedly winterish-and yesterday morning we learn that ice was seen in some places fnlly t of an inch thick. The thermometer indicated a very low de gree of heat, and as night approached yesterday Ihe cold increased in intensity from the ;mld-day mildness. We learn from the clerk of the steamer York town, that there was quite a heavy gale in the lower bay on Haturday night and Sunday morning, and that several of the vessels composing the fleet at anchor there were more or less injured, Five or six of them dragged their anchors for a conside. rabte distance and one or two went ashore. The ship Jamestown. loadig for Liverpool, went ashore on the middle ground, and the steamer Bal tic was alongside taking off cotton when the York town left. The ship George Washington, also loading for Liverpool, likewise went ashore on the middle ronud, bot not so badly as ino the case of the Jamestown. The ships City of Mobile and S. Curling came in collision with other vessels during the blow, and sustained some damage to their rigging-the for mer losing her jib-boom and the latter the end of her martingale, and badly chafed besides. What further damage was sustained we did not learn. Trans Intelllgenee. A BATTLE WITH INDIA. S. The yellow fever has almost disappeared from Galveston. On the 10th and 11th there were live deaths in Houston, and warm weather had devel oped several new cases. The Houston Telegraph of the 11th learns that the H. and T. C. Railway Company received bills of lading of the iron to finish their road to Millican's in Brazos county. There are four miles of grade yet to be completed. They have also just received two new locomotives, which will give them a full complement. They will open the road to Nava soat as soon as the bridges are finished to that point. The Jasper Clarion says that the wolves are very bad in the north western section of that county. The Clarion states that a child, but nine months old, like an infant Hercules, strangled a rattlesnake in the fields in that county, a few days since. We stop the press, says the San Anitonio Herald of the 8th, to announce the killing of two men by the Indians on the Leona, seven miles below Fort Inge. One was Mr. Cap Hurd. The name of the other not given. They were killed and scalped, day before yesterday, and their bodies found. The Herald of the 10th publishes the following letters: LEON SPmIosn, Nov. 8, 1859.-This afternoon, at 1 o'clock, two men staying with me had been out making hay, two miles southeast from here, near the Salado Water Holes, at the so-called Pepper Bottom, when they saw fourteen Indians. alt mounted, going southeast. My neighbors and my= self arc ready and willing to intercept the Indians at a point two miles from here, where they must pass on their return, as soon as we are inforined that they are driven back, or are on their return with booty. F. SIoMN. P: S.--I have the fullest confidence in the state ment of the two men who brought the report; one of them was free from excitement, as he was con coaled in such a way as to see them plainly with out being seen. The Indians were traveling slowly, so that there can be no mistake as to the number. F. S. Since receiving the above, we learn from good authority that two men have been killed by the In dians in this locality. We were informed that they were out on a cow hunting, and two of them have turned up missing, and it is supposed they are killed. We do not vouch for the truth of the above, but it is more likely that it may be so. nsos CrsRU , Nov. 5,1..9. Dear Herald: Myself, John Kennedy and Jesse Lewis, with two soldiers, got in here last night at 10 o'clock. We came after the doctor.. At about 9 o'clock A. M. of the 4th inst. we came up with the Indians on the Llano, and had a running fight with them, in which Lieut. Hazen was severely wounded, and I fear mortally. He was shot with a six-shooter in the right side, and also in the left arm. Sam Everett, of the Uvalde Rangers, is severely wounded, shot in the face and in the left arm. Bess Pulliam is wounded in two places with arrows. The Uvalde Rangers, Mountain Rangers and Lieut. Hazen with eight soldiers from Fort Inge were all in the fight, and all done their duty. Too much praise cannot be given to Joln Ken nedy, a lieutenant of the Mountain Rangers. And Iere I will state that the world cannot beat Lieut. Hazen in an Indian fight. All the boys done well. The Indians had guns, six-shooters and bows and arrows. I saw three Indians killed. After shooting all my loads of I stopped. There were only three Indians, that I could see, then on their horses, and the Rangers were pressing them hard. I have no doubt but that they killed tlem all. I saw only seven Indiaons. To George Alle and John Daugherty much praise is dse; they com manded thie Uvalde Rangers. The Doctor Is ready, and I must start back. I think it is about ninety miles from here to where we had the fight. We got John lDavenport's aistol and John Bowles' scalp from one of thie Indians that was killed. Yours, Jolso M. hMComeoenu. Sir--I have the honor to report that a sergeant and private with three citizens, arrived at this port last night reportlg an engagement between a party consisting of a detachment of troops from Fort Inge under Lieut. Hzcen and a company of citizens of Uvalde, nonbering in all forty-two, with a party of Idians, In which the latter have lost eight killed and d ounded; also, that some of Lieut. Hazen's party were badly wounded, including Lieut. Hazen himself. The Sergeant was sent to this post for medical aid, and I have directed Assistant Surgeon White, with an escort of twenty men, a light wagon from smy buttery for the wounded, and a wagon with aspplies, to proceed to their assistance immediately. Thie anair took place about one hundred miles froa heire, somewhere between Fort Terrett and Fort Mason. There is a wagon road front this to the old camp on the Noeces, forty-five miles dis tast. The wagons will stop there and a mounted escort, with Dr. White, will have to follow a trail some fifty miles, unless sooner met. l n, air, very respetfullyt your ob't t.e 't., (titet oe. sWM. During a strong gale the huge globe was lifted up with a jerk, dragging the heavy sand-bags that served as weight to keep it down, several feet, causing them to dance about like puppet dolls. A few rods to the east of the balloon stands a small tent containing rope and other arti cles in constant use. Against the sharp ridge pole of this tent the balloon was driven with great vio lence, breaking a hole in the muslin, through which the gas rushed In dense volumes and in a few mo menta the 88,000 feet of gas in the balloon had escaped, and the lately expanded globe presented the appearance ots-oollapeed misu of flabby rags. Again, Baltimore county was carried for the Democracy by notorious coloniing from the Flei and Secontd Wards of the city in the Twelfth Di trlct, from the bloody Eighth Ward in the IItnth District, and from the Eighteenth and Ninetheinrh Wards in the First District. The faetaIn itheseeasde wilt send the claimants back to ptivate lie, beyot a peradventure, Deimocratl themselvee 4 g judges. After humorously showing how this will tase a hitch in the "Reform Programme," to throwover board the city delegation, the Patriot aidds:' We bear It malicioulywhisipered thatihe Demo crats are delighted at the prospect, as itwll relieve them from the responsibility of adeoptiug h f or modern Ame.nean measures, which they under took to carry through, without theremotest pee tation they should ever b tilled on t erform their promises. Boliod'nt be`l .fe t ir~b s It is just like our jocose frieen.. nldeedit eminently probable that they are wr~g oni the Reformers to demand the sacrifice of the American City Delegation, as a holocaust, for the expiess purpose of throwing off the respsonahilifi of re forming Baltimore, well knowing tatftheir majority is to be hung midway between heaven aid earts, like Mlahomet's coffin, bythe Americacn ontestant in the counties. If so, our opponents display more than their usunal amount of shrewdness. But, be this as it may, one thing Is certain there is a sudden fetch up in Gov. LowI's Reform Programme. From the Baltimore Clipper we extract the fol lowing pungent remarks in regard to the election in that city: After repeated ineffectual efforts to overcome by force and fraud a legitimate majority of the' people of the city of Baltimore, this loofoeo party and its deluded allies have ngasin beeo. deeareu. No one has attempted to defend either the frauds or the violence that may have been used by the succeesful party. The facts abundantly ehow tha violence and fraud wore only.theresolta of the in. sane efforts of the opponents of the dominant Party to carry by force an election they were unable to carry by votes. There can be nodoubt-that there has been for the last five years, and that there i now an overwhelming majority of thea voting pop lation of Baltimore opposed to Demoersny and to everything akin to it. Bat s asn excuse for their defeat it has been the oustom of the Democratic party managers, npon theeve of every election, to produce bytheir coarse senohaninflammation of the public mind as will necseuarily lead to some ,s4 tirbance of the public peace. They would not have peace without a triumph of thei own party, and they wilfully merdered peace te excuse their defeat. And now these Instigators of trife-ttha self appointed controllers of public opinion and publie affbirs, foiled in their attempt to achieve a leofoco victory by snatching the reins of government from the hands of the people and substituting an odious despotism of a chosen few for, if you please, the despotism of the many, are madly hushing their vindictiveness beyond the election, to which they appealed, and endeavoring-to introduce a social proscription of those who will not bow in servile submission to their behests. They urge this pro scription against all the candidates of the success ful party. They say "let the line be drawn-broad, distinct, unequivocal, in all the relations of life, in all the concerns of business, in all the intercourse of the community." They say of the candidates for Congress : "If the times were not so deplorably out of joint there would not be a member of the House that would extend to either the righthand of fellowship, nor a hotel or private mansion in Washington that would be open for their reception. They would be met at the threshold of every circle which they might attempt to enter, with the indignant expres oion-Avasn,t and quit my sight !" And these are the utterances of Democracy, of that immaculate Democracy which has for years maintained its hold upon the public treasury only by means of the most infamous frauds and violence i elections- of that Democracy which placed James Bochaan in the Presidential chair by the most glaring and outrageous desecration of the purity of the ballot-box, and achieved a triumph in a mulnicipal election in the city of Washington by the bullets of the United States marines--o that Democracy that has everywhere rewarded Its most notorious election bullies and ballot-box stnif. ers with public offices-of that Democracy which fills our custom-houses and Governmental depart ments with mens as infamous as the worst rowdies who have ever ligured in the police annals of the country-of that Democracy which clothes with one of the highest appointments in the gift of the administration, Jehuli Glancy Jones, proved by au investigatiag commoiittee of the House of Represent atives to have been guilty of a most disreputable fraud upon the Government, and snatched from the prisoner's dock of the Federal Court Isaiah Ryn ders, the chief of tihe notorious Empire Club, to place him in one of the most lucrative and respon sible offices under the Government. It is the men who fawn upon luchanan, elected by tihe most in famous frauds, and areo proud to place their legs under the sane mahogany with Jones and Rynders, the representntives of frand and violence in elec tious, rwho bespeak a social proscription of such men as J. GEanrrr SnrmT's INsANrrT.-A dispatch of the 10th from Utica says: Gerritt Smith shows continned marks of insanity. No one is allowed to see him. but It is understood that he refers in his ravings to the Harper's Ferry matters, and supposes himself arrested. The Utica Heraldsays: We are greatly pained to learn that Gerritt Smith, the free-hearted but sadly erratic philanthropitt, became on Monday last an inmate of the Now York State Lunatic Asylum, where it has been found necessary to place him on account of marked in eauity. We learn that he is very violent, and has exhibited a disposition to commit suicide, and that an attendant keeps constant watch over him to pre vent hIim from laying violent hands on himself. This result, we hear, is attributable to the connection of Mr. Smith's name with the Harper's Ferry affair; many will regard it as the consequence of long. seated and marked disease. The Rochester Express says: Ever since the dcrouenmel of the mad and fool hardy attempts of old Brown at Harper's Ferry, there hove heen rumors that Gerritt Smith was in a most distressing and pitiable state of mind, It is said that he has been constantly wringinghis hands and bemoaning the fate of poor lrown, and accnsiog himself with having been instrumental In' bringing his friends into their.pfentsore tctsobeas.
