The first gun was fired at a luarter before one o'clock, when tihe yachts took their poitions, tile Adeona filet, the Fanny second, and the T. Bailey third. 'T'he Iiley capsized at Ctarting, but the yawl of I the Grey Cloud went to tie assistance of her crew, together witll a bat tentout by the cillub. One of tihe cew, tir. J. Kelley, swam from the caplized boat to tile Ilath IlHuee on tile upper side of the r canal, a distance of about six hundred yards, withl the incumbrance of all his clothes except his At ten minutes past ,. the Fanny and Adeona got off'in flue style, with a stilt' breeze, the latter taking the lead, with tie veteran yachtsman, C. Braisted, at the helm. The first stake was passed at 1:30, tile Adeona ahead, lbt the Fanny close in her wake. The second stake was rounded at 2 o'clock precisely, and the home stake at 2:12, the Fanny coming in thle canal and thus giving up thie race. The Adeona now had it all to herself, but a squall coming up she was compelled to anchor. Riding out the gale, she took a fresh start, and came home in gallant style, Capt. Braisted jump ing overhboard and swimming ashore in the canal to receive the congratulations of the club and the spectators, During the latter part of tile race itrained" con siderable if not more," and only those who were in the club house at the end of the pier could fully appreciate thle beauty of the thing. The race over, all assembled at tihe lak-House, where the prize was duly presented, and, as a matter of course, some champagne and some speeches were succeesoully got oil. He obtained audience of the landlady, Mrs. Glass, and said he wished to engage the whole house that night for a newly-married couple and their suite. The worthy hostess demurred, as che might thus exclude some of her best entomers; but the appli cant was very civil as well as urgent, and gave assurance that the party was " highly respectable." There was no difference as to terms, and Mrs. Glass was told that she would be glad afterwards to know that she had stretched a point to accommodate the party. In these circumstances an arrangement was come to, and the occupants of the house at the time were politely requested to hboard out for the night. The principals arrived in the evening- I apparently quiet people, satisfledwith everything and everybody about them. In a newly-married couple such equanimity mighthave been expected, t but this part of the affair was evidently a hoax, and had only the effect of raising conjectures as to who the party might be: but on this point all the attend- I ants were dumb. Next morning at 10 o'clock the I carriages were at the door, and the strangers took their seats. All being ready to start, nrs. Glass was called for, and Lord Churchill complimented her on the cleanliness and order of her establish. ment. The strangers, he said, had been very om- I fortable, and the lady said she had never slept a more soundly in her life. "I may now tell you," e said his lordship, as the principal carriage drove away, " that you have been entertaining her most gracious Majesty the Queen and the Prince Con sort. They do not wish to be known, however, until about t0 minutes after they have left." The 1 royal party then drove toward Castle Grant, the residence of the Earl of Seafleld, who, however, is at present at Balmacaan, in Glen-Urquhart. It a of a man who, after he had invented many ingenious patents but with out profits, (and also given up his profeslon of writing.master) bought eight Scotch acres of land near Edinburg, from which he intended to geta profit of £1600 a year, His idea was to get 50O gooseberry bushes on an acre, making in all 40,000. and between the bushes to raise cabbag anll other vegetables, expecting no profit till th fifth year. His Iriends told him he could not get the crop to market in time, which he found the case; the berries rotted and but a small part were sold, the crop being large and fine. He therefore abandoned gooseberries and went over to carrots, but when he got his crop to market they Were found to be diseased in great part. Nothing daunt ed, and having heard that carrots were good to fat ten poultry, he bought a great lot and invented machines for cutting and smashing the rootsinto shape, on which he fattened his ltwls: the result was, their ttesh was the exact color ofcarrotl after it was cooked, and appared to be quite raw. No body would buy them. So much for experimental agriculture. tILteNoS lcnCUrRA IN WuEATIt.--I 1834, twenty six years ago, the valuatiuon of Bostonwa seventy four millious eidht hond el and five thousand eight hundred dollars.
