in her wake. The second stake was rounded at
2 o'clock precisely, and the home stake at 2:12,
the Fanny coming in thle canal and thus giving up
thie race.
The Adeona now had it all to herself, but a
squall coming up she was compelled to anchor.
Riding out the gale, she took a fresh start, and
came home in gallant style, Capt. Braisted jump

to receive the congratulations of the club and the

In a little office where they employ but fourteen th

$n0,;'00. FHe is fabulously old, but hlie made twenty- wi

Thr re in one who was partner in the State print- th

the State printers, with a generous construction, pr
took dorble wages for Spanish press-work also. se

Tea ..Into TRaP.DY IN TeV.rEE.E.--A corre-I
pendent of the Nashville Banner, writing from
Fosterville. Rutherford county, Tennessee, under a
date of September 23d. gives the particulars of,
one of the most horrible murders committed in ti
that neighborhood that has ever occurred in any
civilized land. The letter says: h
Mr. Merritt Stovall, reaiding two miles from this d
depot and twelve miles from Murfreesboro, re- te
turned hme from work at one of the neighbors,
and during the night murdered hls family. (except v
one son) consisting of his wife and four children, a
and then cu his own throat and jumped intoa sink
concitaiirg n a:er an I flinihed himself by drowani.
He murdered his ,family by knocking some of their d
heads open, and afterward cutting their throats
with a razor. It is thought that all that saved the
life of the remaining boy was his being absent at!
the time. The cause for this horrible deed is
thought to be insanity. He seemed to think his t
family were going to starve, although he was quite
able to support them. He had been heard to ex.
press himself to the amount that he would rather (
see them dead than suffer. lie had an interesting
family, and seemed to love them. He wao a man
of excellent reputation, and nothing conld make
those well acquainted with him believe him guilty
of a deed so horrible but the evidence of their .
own eyes. t

day forenoon, says the tovorneee (Scotland) Conri- t
er, a gentleman drove to the door of the comforta.
ble inn or hotel known as the Grant's Arms, in the t
center of the open square which constitutes the
village of Grautown, the capital of Strathspey. He
obtained audience of the landlady, Mrs. Glass, and
said he wished to engage the whole house that
night for a newly-married couple and their suite.
The worthy hostess demurred, as che might thus
exclude some of her best entomers; but the appli
cant was very civil as well as urgent, and gave
assurance that the party was " highly respectable."
There was no difference as to terms, and Mrs. Glass
was told that she would be glad afterwards to know
that she had stretched a point to accommodate the
party. In these circumstances an arrangement
was come to, and the occupants of the house at the
time were politely requested to hboard out for the
night. The principals arrived in the evening- I
apparently quiet people, satisfledwith everything
and everybody about them. In a newly-married
couple such equanimity mighthave been expected, t
but this part of the affair was evidently a hoax, and
had only the effect of raising conjectures as to who
the party might be: but on this point all the attend- I
ants were dumb. Next morning at 10 o'clock the I
carriages were at the door, and the strangers took
their seats. All being ready to start, nrs. Glass
was called for, and Lord Churchill complimented
her on the cleanliness and order of her establish.
ment. The strangers, he said, had been very om- I
fortable, and the lady said she had never slept a
more soundly in her life. "I may now tell you," e
said his lordship, as the principal carriage drove
away, " that you have been entertaining her most
gracious Majesty the Queen and the Prince Con
sort. They do not wish to be known, however,
until about t0 minutes after they have left." The 1
royal party then drove toward Castle Grant, the
residence of the Earl of Seafleld, who, however,
is at present at Balmacaan, in Glen-Urquhart.

given up the idea of embarking in the Pansilippe

leads to the supposition that a reconciliation had
been brought about between them. It may be

and statistics of Peru, by G. Davila Condeluarin,
lately a professor in the University of Lima, has
just appeared at Turin. We gather from it the fol
lowing statistical deteils: The area of tile Republic
is 43l,00 Spanish square miles. The population is
2,5011,000, of whicho 00,000 are descendauts of the
Spanish emigration, 1,400,000 are descendants of
the original inhabitants, and 200,0t00 are black anld
mixed. The armny consists of t00 men, and tile
navy casists of eight war steamers. The govcern
mental income averages about 1i,000,000 plaiters,
and thle expenditures t16,000,000. The national
debt is .l44l.00,000 piasters. Peru posooses enough
gunab to allow of the exportation of 100,000 tons
for a period of 200 years.
It will be remembered tlhat some weeks go, a
lady, named White, was robbed ofl'any diateouds
at Saratoga, tile value of tile plunder being nearly
0;1l00. A suspicious pair of personn, male oand fe
mule, presently appeared at a Boitoln hotel, gor
geously attired and clearly afflicted with jewelry.
Tile police at once sent toSaratoga for a description
of a certain woman there, supposed to be tile dia
mond thief, the description came, and was found to
apply closely to the female just spoken of as at
Beoton, but the birds had flown to Halifax, and
thence to Engl'and.
IN E.as\t:oT.-A Cuban letter to the Charleston
Mercury says a cargo of slaves had been landed
near C:niense, but one or two otllers Ihave been
captured. G(overnment seems now in earnest to
put down tile trade, obeying, no doubt, orders reo
cently received from Madrid. Several ulticials have
been disgraced lately, and tile late Governor of
Sagua htas been removed atd ordered to continue
his service in Spain,te for having allowted a cargo or
two to be diemnlbarked. lie does not appear to

THe LoS. MAN.-We guess our lost Foreman, .

We don't believe that his disappearance was "myso

except the kiud that sffiictedHunutigon, lohler

that the man is a consummate rascal and a thief.
(We hope we shall be understood.) Developments
have come to light since hit departure, ten da
ago, which show that he got in debt to everybody
wio would trust him; he borrowed money of anl
his acquaintances on account of "pressing need,"
and he imposed upon the proverbial itndmnes of
printers, who will always help a brother in want.
n thias way he borrowed over $100 about this offina
alone, all of which we believe he intended to steal
from the beginning. We have an affectionate re
collection of a small portion of that $100. We
don't wan't to wish the man any harm. but really
would Itae pleasure in reporting his next meeting
with the Leader boys.

A SERoES of DtISASTROU SreoPULATIONS.-A fail
tire of the land, as a means of producing wealth
rapidly to the cultivator, is given in Sir John Sin
clair's correspondence. It a of a man who, after
he had invented many ingenious patents but with
out profits, (and also given up his profeslon of
writing.master) bought eight Scotch acres of land
near Edinburg, from which he intended to geta
profit of £1600 a year, His idea was to get 50O
gooseberry bushes on an acre, making in all
40,000. and between the bushes to raise cabbag
anll other vegetables, expecting no profit till th
fifth year. His Iriends told him he could not get
the crop to market in time, which he found the
case; the berries rotted and but a small part were
sold, the crop being large and fine. He therefore
abandoned gooseberries and went over to carrots,
but when he got his crop to market they Were
found to be diseased in great part. Nothing daunt
ed, and having heard that carrots were good to fat
ten poultry, he bought a great lot and invented
machines for cutting and smashing the rootsinto
shape, on which he fattened his ltwls: the result
was, their ttesh was the exact color ofcarrotl after
it was cooked, and appared to be quite raw. No
body would buy them. So much for experimental
agriculture.
