About 1250 meridian a telegraphic dispatch from New York Good was sprang on the market, stating that a private tram letter from Liverpool had been received in New Yest York quoting an advance of 1d. In cotton in Liver- modi pool previoas to the 5th iet., when we, two days ago, received advices up to the 6th and 7th indts. b Nevertheless, these canard advices partially put a uced stop to general transactions in the staple. The Lawl improvement in commercial and financial chrtles which we noticed yesterday and the day previmen was observed to-day, and in general the com mw aL nity is moving oneremarkably weal. There has net been any suspensions this week, though a grantd sxo failure has been alked of, and, on investigating stoce the talk, we learn that the frmof Panic, Fudge .& Te Co. has been brought to a close; that the extra onlinary exertions of Mr. Panto,.witk friends and sle sroakers united, have failed-essentially failed and n broke in meeting Its eogageaentsi that the firm will immediately go into liquidation, or possibly enter into a new compact and asonciation. There was a decided improvement in moneyed sael cineea to-day. The otrings at the banks were 9 not equal to the income, and enathestreet there lnll was very little offering. Some negotiations were sale in sourse of treaty at from 2@2tct. per month, Wei mand at 1.t2. Those that operate on borrowed t I capital, and are dependent on bank facilities from ]t day to day, will feel the pressure antil thq crisis is at passed: The failure of Panic. Fudge & Co. re- gal moves one great impediment to the fetare succens p and prosperity of the seasonls business, though it so is not expected that the season's beninems will be hBai altogether as prosperous as the last. The Exchange market wso rather quiet than otherwise to day. Northern, funds were not alto gether in large supply. In, most quarters the counter rate for checks at the banks wasn die., with a very dull inquiry. Outside there were sales at 1 .et. dis. in unlimited sams, while the banks ant were picking up as much as they wanted at 14 dis. Though 1, 11.14 are the quotations, they are in rather arbitrary for the present time ; yet there Pr was, all round, a good deal of business carried hat through in Northern funds. In time bills we did I not learn of any transactionso They may be quoted 0o0 at all sorts of rates, and then again at no rates It whatever; but parties who can wait the maturity Sib of silty day drafts will realize a fine profit-that at is, if 3lji3 ict. dis. can be considered such. In an Foreign Exchange the upward tendency of yester- he day met with no response. Large dealers were b. paying to-day 100t for the best of bills, and from at that down to 99@9@. Remittance rates of yester day were not sustained,. though really, outside of to some coffee settlements, the demand for remit tance is too meagre to command a notice; we N, therefore quote extreme rates for clear sterling from 98@100t and 100.l101I. Document bills 4 range from 96t 97 up to 93~. Francs have im proved slightly. The movements to-day were 11 within the range of 5.862@5.067, though some ex c:h eptional sales were closed at 5.06l4@5.65 up to H 621 for remittance-these latter figures are for 17 something very nice on Paris direct. There were other transactions on outports at from 5.85.85 75. There is a better feeling in regard to Bank o Shares. Holders have advanced their rates. The low figures talked of some days since are discarded altogether, and holders see their way through tce without submitting to sacrifices. The Scrip mar ket is doll. Sales of the Crescent Mutual Insurance , Company of 1860 have been made at 5Oc. The an nual statement of the Citizens' Mutual Insurance Company has been well received by those inter t ested. The losses of the year have been compara a tively large, nevertheless its general business shows or a profit, and being a home ofice, to the manor r. born, all its interests are identified with the pros t. perity and welfare of New Orleans and Louisiana. It shows a profit of 6A i1ot. on its capital and as sets for the last year. The usual interest of 6 ict. on scrip will be paid, according to notice else where. The capital and assets of the company are h now f:.;,0O0, all in good securities, say bonds, baenk stocks and 12,C00 in coath. The following extract from a grain circular, da tedl Liverpool, November 2tllh, will be read with i nocrst by all engaged in both the cotton and is grain trades. England is rot so had oil for food as has been given out for some months past: E The weather bas been marvelously fine: first for preparing and sowing the land for another harvest; p aeun:dIy, in giving improved condition to the new wheat, rendering it more suitable to the fastidious b taste of the millers, who have been rather uanexl peetedly slpiled by a plenteous supply of fine dry L foreign; and, thirdly, by calming dona men's minds as to the productiveness of the recent har vest. Some will aver that it has no parallel for badness since the memorable year 1810. Others BY consider it as resulting much beyond previous fears I and anticipations, and that, after all, we have se- E cured a tolerably fair crop. Now,taking two such autagonistic notions, it may be that the truth as to s the comparative quantity will be found at a point between the two extrenmes. The conductors of the public press have abundactly ventilated the ques- Cc tion of the harvest, in the discharge of their daily and weekly duties for the benefit of the general public. From their writings, from private sources, and from long practical farming knowledge, I am I able to make up a statement as regards such at the midland counties as I am well acquainted with. Observe that I have taken the maan proportional d quantities, both as regards numben of bushels per acre and weight per imperial bushel. fGiving a detail of bushels per acre and weight C per imperial bushel, the circular goes on to state: Touching this comparison of the different dis- A n tricts, it cannot fail to occur to, a reasonable mind ,r that, as regards quantity per acre, we are thisyenar O not much behind a fair average of seasons. But the point of moment is the reduced weigllt per bushel, and the eonsequent amount of food-pro ducing power, which will have to be tested at the mill. Now, to arrive at the solution of this grave question-for certainly it is one worthy of serious attention and of calculationc-suppose we take the average weight of an imperial bushel of wheat this d year, say 58 pounds, and compare it with the av t, erage of any seven years, say 6l to 62 poands. We S shall then tind a deticiency of about t;G ?ot. upon e our estimated growth in the United Kingdom, taken as 20,000,000, or a deficit of 1,350,000. I have no p prejudice wlatever in favor of these dedcctins; and any one who is disposed to think ditbrently can omake his calculations to his own satisfaction, by considering that :333,000 quarters of wheat and fliur represent every pound per imperial bushel, Sor one and two-thirds per cent. If the above should be the only momentous defi ciency in the wheat crop of 18S0, we have not much to be uncomfortable about. Time will dry O and mellow tile grain, making it serviceable for man's use; for it must be borne in mind that, though comparatively poor in quality, all Ihas been gatiered sound, witihout blighit, mildew, rust, or any other disease incident to the crop. Now the aid given by free foreign imports from all quarters during the months of August, Septem at ber and October amounts, according to the Board e of Trade returns, to 2.670,00 quarters ofat wheat and at flour, being within 805,00 quarters of half what we I imported in 1il3--,235,8f0 quarters--which was be our highest import in one year, and more than half of the quantities received the other years of large foreign impanrtations of wheat and flour, 1851, 5'O& and '58. Bat besides this, what do we witness 1 now? I take the last Mark-lane Express, and and that in nearly all the reports of agricultural mar h'kets English old wheat is quoted as bought foe saln and sold. There can be no fear, then, of our being put upon "short cowmmons" for the "staff of jife," and as for speulation--beyond that of fair im portation, which will be promoted by every need nfinl assistance-no judicious and polite hanker would lend a helping hand in the poescut state of the discount market. As regards the other crops of cereals and roots, they deserve merely a passing notice, as being neither very bad nor very good. Turnicp and mange) wortzel and potatoes have improved in size and wvight through the late favorable dry weather. A very obliging person is the boarding-house keeper who advertises thus: " Single gentlemen efurnislhed with pleasant rooms; also, one or two a gentlemen reith oices. ee A man of family, and rather too fond of riding " with the girls, having made an appointment in North Adanms, Mass., to ride out by moonlight with °a lady acquaintance, drove smartly to the meeting Inace, helped the fair damsel into the buggy, gave cet a friendly hug and kiss. After recovering from the embrace, the lady threw off her bonnet, and t. the roguish face of his wife confronted the incon y stant husband. Corow....
