Old Abe can sitand in the back poteh ofthe White House-and, with the aid of a glass, see the rebels at work making fortifications and gradualVyextending their front in the direction of Atlington Heights, where the Federals in full force are entrenched. We doubt whether Abra ham enjoys the speotacle, but as he does not ap pear to consult our bappiness and pleasure, we are not under any particular obligations to consult his. He would do well to keep that Scotch cap apd loak hanging on a convenient peg near the door. It appears to be generally believed that a big battle will soon occur at or near Washington, though nobody knows, except those who ought to know, what are the plans and designs of our mili tary chieftains. If the Yankees possessed the pluck and grit that they claim for themselves, they would come down from Arlington Heights and give as a fair fight. But the lesson of Manassas has not been lont on them, and a fair fight is about the last thing they care to have. Instead of a cry of "on to Richmond," they are huddling together behind their breastworks, and count themselves itcky that they are not attacked, and that Wash inetonCity is safe. Such is the way in which their eomhbs have been cut, and their pride and inso leoue taken down by the defeat at Manassas. This is the situation opposite Washington, but in the meantime we have also a large force higher tp the Potomac, near Leesborg, and it would not surprise us if they were soon moved across the river into Maryland. If we had men enough to threaten Washington in the rear, at the same time that we gave the enemy battle at Arlington, the city would soon be in our possession. The Feder als are undoubtedly alarmed, and alarm generally precedes defeat. If we whipped them so badly at Maasas, when they were confident of victory, still more easily could we polish them off now, when most of them, officers as well as men, are trembling with terror and apprehension. The Yankees know that it is a bad cause they are fight ing for; and even brave soldiers, which the Yan kees are not, cannot fight well when conscious of the meanness of their cause. In the Yorktown peninsula we are ready for old Wool whenever he chooses to come out of his hole at Fortress Monroe. If he advance on the York river side of the peninsula he will meet Magruder, and if he advance on the James river side he will meet somebody who will give him equally as warm a reception. He will pass between Scylla and Charybdis, if he goes up the centre of the penin sula, and will get wrecked on either one or the other. Very likely both of our columns would close in on him and cat him to pieces. The Yankees abased Picayune Butler for not advancing from Fortress Monroe to Richmond, and we will see now what old Wool will do. It he make the attempt, and we do not think he will, he will be sorry thatche did not stay at home. Our forces in the Yorktown peninsula are more eager for a fight than any others we have insthe field, and, be sure, they will give a good account of themselves when the opportunity offers. In Western Virginia we are driving the enemy back every day, capturing his men, and occasion ally defeating such of them as we can overtake. Both in the Kanawha Valley and in the Northwest we have not only checked the enemy's advance but compelled him to fall back. In Missouri our columns are advancing through the State, and the Federals are getting out of their way. Inshort, everywhere we are on the offen sive, the enemy on the defensive. The singular fact is presented that the Army which was to over run the South has been compelled to assume a de fensive attitude-not carrying out its avowed pur poses, but solicitious only to save itself from de feat. The project of subduing the South, after five or six months' trial, does not appear, some how or other, to work well. At all events, if the South is much subdued, she does not appear to be conscious of it. Letter fromn Vrrginia. Specialtothe New Orleans Oreecent. Ros!es, ,ert. 1" eat. Mr. -likir--The friends of Gen. Johnston, resid in Richmond and the neighborhood, have sub scribed $700 towards the purchase of a horse for the General. None hut native Virginians have been allowed to subsoribe. Will the friends and associates of Beauregard, natives of Louisiana, born and raised in the parishes of Orleans and St. Bernard, delay a moment in tendering to the General acompliment of the same kind? I pre some not. Let a committee of Creole citizens take the matter in hand immediately, and raise a fund for the purpose. If the matter is not promptly at tended to, the ladies of Charleston will forstali the friends of Ge. IBeauregard in making the compli. mentary offering. The Creole ladies of the city can raise the required amount of money in three days. The season of annual fairs in Kentucky is fast approachiog, when stock equtal to any in the world will be exhibited for premiums and aubse quent sale. Let the Creole ladies raise a fund, in conjunction with Creole gentlemen, and appoint our respected townsman, 11. J. Ward, Esq., now at Louisville, in conjunction with Capt. Willbitey of Scott, and Col. John Morgan of Fayette county, Kentucky, as a committee for thie selection aal purchase of two horses for the distinguished Lou isianian, Gen. G. T. Beauregard. Those gentlemen will select horses thlat is horses ; and though I have not the authority, I will pledge myself that Col. Morgan will have the horses suitably cared for and presented to Beauregard either in Washing ton City or in Baltimore. It this suggestion is not immediately acted upon, movements will com mence in other quarters for the purpose of pur chasing horses for Gen. Beauregard. 'he parishes of Orleans and St. Bernard should not plermit this honor to be wrested from them. Limit the dona ttons in amount, and confine the subscriptions to native Lonisianians, and the matter can be speedily consummated. The Confederate Congress finished their labors about 11 o'clock last night, and adjourced, as I have learned, to meet again in November nest. The details of the deliberations of that body are suil conducted in secrecy, and we mot await patently tor their publicity. The Clon. D. F. ICeuner leaves for heome this mornling. The capture of thetwo tlrts on Cape Hatteras, which were first supposeed to ble unilmllrtant is sw regarded most serious. It will require the vigil-anCe of a large force to pre. ventthe Federalists from capturing and controlling the sea-board railroads in Nrotlh Carolina and Vir ginia. There has been most otlpable negligence I somewhere, and those at the head of affairs at Richmond have directed an investigation, and nothing has yet transpired of the deiberations d lf Congreea on the afair, which it is to be hioped will i saddle the blame on the right party. Thia has been one of the Sundays I alluded to In one of. my former letters, and there will be iso qnietnde onal the morning papers are published. I am completely exhausted following the rumors circulating the entire day between the Exchange and the Spottswood House, and am obliged to re tire to bed, utterly ignorant of what is actually ccuring. I wish it wasMonday morning. Rumors of a deplorable character are in circulation, point ngtowards our army in Missouri. Major-General Folk, Brigadier Generals Pillow and Cheathasm are said to be at loggerheads. Cheatham, it is said, has been very offensive :-a his conduct towards those of superior rank, aid has withdrawn his brigade from Missonri and is now at Union City, refusing to serve under Pillow or obey Gen. Polk. This insubordination of true men is regarded here as more fatal to the Southern cause than the loss of half a dozen battles. It is also stated that the jonction which was intended to be formed hetween ardee and McCulloch was prevented, fromt us. pardonable jealousy on the part of one of the rigadiers. Dr. Berthelot. of New Orleans, who expectedto join MoCullooh's command in Missouri. arrived here on yesterday, having met some of the sick and wounded of the Third Louisiana Regi ment beyond Pocahontas, Arkansas. on their way to Fort Smith. The physicians and nurses sent on by the liberal and patriotic citizens of New Orleans to the sick and wounded Louisianians, unfortunate ly selected Memphis and New Madrid as the route by which they could reach Springfield; they will find that impracticable. The only route by which they could have reached MIcCulloch's command was by steam to Pocahontas or by Little Rock and Fort Smith, Arkansas, and it would require, with transportation prepared for their accommodation, at least twenty days to have reached their destina tion. The land carriage from the head of steam boat navigation at Van Benren or Fort Smith, on the Arkansas river, to Sipringfield, Missoeri, m.wot be at least 400 miles, and 350 miles of that distance through a mountainous district of country, without regular stands for the traveler, being sparsely settled, and entirely unprepared to furnish enter tainment to travelers and way-farers. It is to be regretted that the kindness and liber ality of the noble-hearted citizens of New Orleans should be rendered useless by those unsurmonnta ble obstacles, but the return of the Third Regi ment of Lousiasianas to Arkansas, will nevertheless afford a fine field for the exercise of the intended kindness. If there were at Yorktown and Grove Landing on James river, where the Second. Filth and Tenth Regiments of Louisiana are stationed. in addition to Dreux's Battalion and the Zouaves, some of our New Orleans nurses, many a noble volunteer from our State, who now rests beneath the sod of the peninsula, would have been saved to his country and to his friends, and many now who are lingering in hospitfla amonget strangere could be restored to health and usefulness. .oery State in the Confederacy, with the exception of Louisiana, and perhaps Texas, has abundance of nurses, who have cotee here for the purpose of de voting themselves to the sick and wounded of their respected States. I hope sincerely that Governor Moore and the city authorities will immediately pro vide thirty or forty nurses for the Louisiana troops sick at Yorktown, and those near the M.anassas Jonction. There are many gallast fellows sick in the various hospitals of the city, who would soon recover, under the care of our city nurses. There should be a liberal provision made for them, and every comfort secured to them whilst making the tiresome trip from New Orleans to IRichmond, and a loll guarantee provided for those who make sac rifices in leaving their families and homes on this kindly mission. Prepare for them every thing ne cessary for the sick and convalescent, and place them under the charge and protection of some well-known respectable citizen, who will see that they are properly respected and provided forinathe cars. If the most riotous and insubordinate soldier is apprised of the nature of their journey, it would certainly protect them from insolence and rude I had the pleasure on yesterday of meeting Cant. Emile Lasere, Quartermatser of the Tenth Louisiana regiment, Co. Marigeoy. He was here on business tor tle Regiment, and leaves in the morning far his camp, near Grove's Landingon the James re.er. The Catairn looks "like a bird." and makes as rapid time over the hills of Richmond as he is in the lhabit of making over the lervel ban quettes ol New Orleans. ceerccr.
