A Ronsar PFaasra.ne.-A few nights since two men entered the Black Horse Hotel, on Seeond street, near Calowhil, kept by Christian Gerhart, and asked to be accommodated with lodgings. It was at a late hour, and the son of the proprietor was closing up the bar preparatory to sbutting up the house or the night. The straogers were told that there was no room for them, and they then asked for drinks--one alling for lemon ade, and the other for a mixed drink, also. While the beverage was being prepared one of the men took from apocket a box containing several smnal bottles, andsaid to the other, "t've been getting a bargain at auction, a small lot of perfumery; perhaps you'd like to take some of it." He then opened one of the bottles, put some of the liquid on a handkerchief, and playfully held it to the nose of young Mr. Gerhart. The smell was rather disogreeable, and Mr. G. drew his head away suddenly. The same thing was repsated a few moments after; this time with some effect. About this time, however, the stableman came into the bar.poom, and both the fellows left sod deily. Young Mr. Gerhart began to have a singu lar sensation about the eyes and the forehead, and before the meaI had been gone more than a minute or two he fell back insensible, and remained in that condition for several hours. As no one in the house knew of the circumstances just related except Mr. Gerhart, and as he was unable to state thi.s, his condition was a mystery until be re covered his consciousness. The object of the mean was to ninder the fire-proof, which con tained about $5000. the money of guests of the house, and the key of which was on the person of Mr. Gerhart.-[Philadelphia Age. LorltoVLLE, May 19.-The river was falling rather lfast yesterda, with six feet nine inches wator in the canal in the evening by tihe mark. :During thie previous twenty-aonr hours it had fallen oive inches at the head of tire falls. and fifteen inches at Portland. The weather has assumed a summer temperature at last, tile thlemometer at noon ranging as high as 75, and quite oiear. on the falls last everning there were but four feet nine inches water in the pass, down the Indian chbte, and falling. The river is steardily falling at all., points from Pittaburg to the Balime. with no orean of water at tIe latter point, and barely enough at the other to float a dug-out. The recent rains have added but little to the volume of water in the upper tfibu. tories, but have proven beueficial to the growiti crops The river at Pittsburg yesterday was falling, with less than 4 feet water on the chlannel. GREAT lNVoNTION--Nr ln)tre Ste'anlboat E. plosiont--Tlhc Sprl Col ndenser.--Mr. John F. Mlr. Fergeuson lru s exhibited hl model to the best pra tical mechanics anod engineers, both in thin city and Albany: also to tie scientific engine huilders and mechanic of both cities, who indorsean it with hnqualitledapiprovat. The merits of tihe improved condenser are mani fold, being able to condense one hundred and a twenty ioands of steam, and form a vacuum of thirteen pounds, a fact to allwho are conve a mt with the application of steam, that establishes its utility and certain success. It cannot weigh over half asmuch as the condensers now in use, and a being quite simple in form and application any I engineer can use it. a ir. Ferguson has been a life-long citizen of fLouisville; first served an apprenticeship to the trade, and has been an engineer on the Western p steamers nearly all his life, and Is foully conversant p with all the wants, defects and reqnirements and uses of steam on the Western rivers. Ie has been t in constant service, and was engineer many years eago of course, of the far-famed, peerless Psytona, the fastest steamer that ever turned a wheel on p the Weatern waters. On one occasion she made the trip from New SOrleanso Owensboro in four days, when some , portion of her machinery gave way ; and on an ! other occasion she made the run from Evansville e to Portland, 260 miles, in thirteen hours. SMr. Fergeson is still engaged as engineer on the river, andhas been on all kinds of boats, all sizes. little and big, and was the engineer of the famous I low-pressure. J. A. Cotten, built there just on the o outbreak of the ar. She was in the lower trade. The spray condenser is a great desideratum an d our Western rivers, and we hope to hear that it Shas been brought into general use, especially on t passenger steamers. The rays of the son were rather too warm for personal comfort while making the " Dailey" round. There was very little activity on the levee. The river is falling, slowly, how ever. White river retains its good character as a reliable stream. St. Francis river is falling very fast. Red river is disastrously high, and receding after having played the deuce with plantations up that stream. Yazoo river is low, but navigable. The Mississippi, at latest advices, was falling at St. Louis, and oll points above. The Ohio is very low between Pittsbnrg and Cincinnati, but retains a favorable stage below that place. Low water may now be expected. The Atlantic was full of people. She p.lt of' a emall lot of sugar and other groceries at this point. pThe Ed.
